For those scoffing that we already landed on the moon with ancient technology, please recall: Apollo 1 killed all 3 astronauts on the ground. Apollo 11's lunar crew had a brush with death during landing due to a guidance computer overload. Apollo 12 almost killed everyone thanks to two lightning strikes just after liftoff. Apollo 13 nearly killed everyone thanks to an explosion onboard. So yes, we've done this before. It was really, really hard. We only did it thanks to an obsessive national focus, colossal budget, and some astronauts who were willing to take grave risks that would never be accepted today. The technology was primitive then, and it showed. We still have a lot to learn, and Artemis could be a giant leap.

The SLS is a shining example of these cost issues even though it will likely be successful in its mission. Of course Falcon Heavy and Starship will be part of that program and will push costs lower. Another decade or two and flights into space will be common and costs will be significantly lower. Those are the days to look forward to.

In my opinion, NASA should be either made a branch of the military or merged with the Air Force. The purpose of the government is to protect the people from foreign and domestic threats, nothing else, so a mandatory tax for a government-run exploration group is just wrong. Merging it with the military would allow the tax to be justified, as we would be gaining a strategic advantage over our enemies.

@MichaelStephenLordReserei19875 жыл бұрын
@Jon Schoen - In that dirt, there's Helium-3. Enough to theoretically power human energy needs for up to 10,000 years--nuclear fusion. Apparently more abundant than on earth, but not in comparison to other celestial bodies in SOL. The cost do it, for decades, has or would've been too costly. It seems that could all change, quickly. That's besides justifications presented in this video (gateway to, and testbed for, Mars--and beyond). There are plenty of reasons to go back to the moon, and set up a habitat.

@Jon Schoen NASA is no failure, they helped pioneer spaceflight, and many of their robotic missions have been absolutely groundbreaking. It's their manned spaceflight programs that have fallen short since Apollo.
@crosbones52625 жыл бұрын
Jon Schoen every mission using a chemical rocket has a risk, but I see why the complex system makes you think it might fail. There’s always a small chance, but the engineers, workers, and astronauts at NASA have plans that they go over to fix almost every possible scenario that could go wrong. They also train very hard and seriously. NASA knows they will be in great trouble if a mission of this cost fails. These risks are necessary for the future they will bring to humanity.😁

In 1969 after the apollo thats why u see less rocket launch in the 70s bc of the budget cut , until the 80s they started to use the space shuttle bc the shuttle can be reused/refurbishable

Would love to pull back the military budget to 500B and increase NASA budget to over 100B, but that's going to be increasingly harder to sell with China starting to match the US in military spending. Still, this is a war of ideology we are having with China now, the best way to win is to flex 10 times better then they can in space, so it still might be a good strategy.
