The slate looks great!!! We laid subway tile in our kitchen earlier this year. First time ever and it turned out nice. You guys probably saved a ton of money doing that yourself instead of paying someone. Good job!

A trick we use with block paving is to have one straight bead all the way around. That brings the cutting edges on the tile away from the wall. Easier to draw and measure. Great work and thanks for sharing

Love it! Your wood stove looks almost identical to the one we had in our last house. It was an amazing wood stove! We didn’t use it often, but when we did it heated our entire main floor and 2nd floor. It was great on really cold days or during a power outage up in the mountains.

Looks great! You may want to seal the slate to keep it looking great. We had slate in our previous home around the fireplace, and sealer made it easy to maintain and kept it from looking "chalky" over time.

Before my last son moved out about 8 years ago he suggested I replace the inefficient wood burning fireplace with a more efficient wood stove. That was ideal because within a year I was working from home making quilts. After much shopping around for the stove I settled on the Englander 2,200 sq ft model from Home Depot. I too wanted a full slate slab but decided to go with the more efficient 12x12 slate tile also from Home Depot. Removing the fireplace gave us the room and chimney placement that worked well with installing the wood stove in the corner. My son carefully cut the wood floor (that I had installed a couple years earlier) at an angle and framed that with a leftover piece of wood, after installing fire resistant backer board he then laid the tile from the wood floor going back to the corner. I asked him to butt the tiles up to each other (no grout line) to give the illusion of a single piece of slate and to offset the tile so no grid line is obvious to the eye. The slate tiles had a nice variation of colors ranging from black/blue, slate blue and even some nice rust brown. When the tile was done he stood back and said the colors are like a patchwork quilt .... as if that was a bad thing ?? Not for a quilter!! He did a beautiful job with the slate tile and the wood stove was installed soon after. By cutting the wood flooring out and installing backer board the slate is even to the wood flooring eliminating any possibility of tripping. That was the best decision ever when it came to remodeling. A few years later when the kitchen was remodeled I wanted slate tile as well but a tile expert suggested using a slate look tile for the large kitchen floor, easier clean up and easier on the feet when standing since the tile was more even. Using the offset install with 16th inch grout line with slate colored grout gives me the look I like which compliments the concrete counter top by the sink and the wood counter for the island. Standing in the living room and looking at the slate under the wood stove and the slate look tile in the kitchen you wouldn't see much of a difference. This all came together because I like slate tile.

We modified a "no dig" black metal fence from Lowes for a fence around our wodburner because two kids got third degree burns. Then I put the wood in an antique steamer trunk. We bought a black metal bucket with a lid because I put the ash bucket outside once and the wind blew the ashes and burned a hole in our porch.

Thank you. I am going to build a hearth for my woodstove. I was fearful that I couldn’t simply tile over the cement board. Lots of KZbin videos add a 2 inch layer of garden paving stones as it appears in your video. I really don’t want much elevation because I fear someone may trip on the lip of the hearth and fall into the hot woodstove. Hopefully my town codes will allow for me to do just the tiles on cement board. It’s been hard to choose what would match go well with my oak floor. I think your herringbone slate design will work just fine.

Whether original in design or a well thought out improvement, having a chimney central in the home can be far more efficient to heating.

Wood Stoves can leave door on your walls.You will be able to see the door when to remove pictures. I grew up with wood stoves. Hope the new ones burn cleaner! Good Luck. Slate floor is Gorgeous!!

Our stove was a little on the pricier side, just because I loved the style so much. We paid a little over 5k, including installation.

If you don't want a tile wet saw, there are cheaper options with tools that repeatedly score the tile and then another part of the tool, or a seperate tool sometimes is used to apply even pressure so that the tile snaps where the scoring is. This is a good cheap option for a man living in the wilderness or something and trying to heat his cabin. (Scoring, in this case means making a thin, but straight scratch in the tile repeatedly in the same spot to weaken it in that area and make it more likely to break." I like this idea, but I used grey sidewalk pavers.

In this post you discuss cutting the cement backer board and adding additional length to each side. My question is, how did you keep those additional pieces in place before adhering the tiles? Or did you just let the mortar and tile dry in place and use this to keep the backer board from separating? Thanks for any and all help!

What about heat absorption? Is it a problem? Neither Hardiebacker nor Durock (USG) recommend doing this as their products absorb heat and have almost no R-value.

I’m going this whole ordeal of finding out my fireplace is a 70’s prefab and can’t heat with wood and must do all these things to make it wood burning safe. So we’re going to seal up the hole and buy a wood stove. Anybody recommend a good middle of the road stove? Not too expensive. Maybe with an ash pan and blower. I can’t handle this all electric home bills anymore

💙I must be the only one- but I think this is not in keeping with the architecture of this classic American Farmhouse. The original fireplaces were likely removed, at some point in time, because of age, or, because of fire. During the kitchen remodel, I thought the original architecture and archival history of the house would be known, and the mystery of the fireplaces in the house solved. In this case it's more of a practical thing than aesthetic. I did want to try my best to keep it pretty, but really we just wanted to heat with wood. This was the only option for that. :)
