I've had success germinating apple seeds in damp paper towels - put into a zipper closure baggie - kept in in the back of the refrigerator for a few months. It was mostly an experiment, and was a surprise that it worked!

I have had lemon trees sprout, out in my compost heap/garden scrap piles. Over winter they self stratified! I noticed them later and potted them up. Kept them in my house, over the next winter, to protect from the freeze. I am in Ontario Canada. I do not have a greenhouse, to over winter anything.

I did exactly this with a plum I liked the taste of. I have no idea if it will turn out well. I got a tiny little plant out of it and stuck it in what will become a fruit tree guild if all goes well. The plum tree I bought for the big bucks died on me this summer so I'm excited for this spring to see if the little one survived the winter. I packed around it with leaves and grasses to give it some shelter from the worst of it. I'm looking to get more fruit trees in the future. I don't mind the wait. It's so much more interesting growing from seeds.

Are there any type of Apple trees that won't need grafting and that will be true to the type of trees the seed came from? And the same question for Peaches also.

If you were to inbreed apples for a long time, you might get a type that is consistent. But as for needing grafting, many will not. It may not be the same as the parent but it won’t be inedible or horrid.

I found peat moss makes all the seeds moldy. I don't know if it's just because I need fresher stuff. I think I am going to go back to paper towels though since I had less problems with that.

🤔 Do the fruits climatize to where we start them? I know we don't have enough chill hours ( according to the USDA) to grow many of the apples and/or pears that we like. What's the scoop, David? Are they fibbing to us? 😆😆

I disagree. There is an easier method. Peel all of the black/brown part completely off of the seed. Apples will germinate probably 95% of the time after being planted directly into the soil. You don't have to stratify at all. I've done this many times. The seed that you plant should be completely white. You save the seed and peel them around late Feb and grow them next to a window so that by the last frost date, you have something to plant. I've done this and I say it works. I've done it to pear seeds and that also works, but I did not do it enough for to really say how much it works. With apples, though, I have done this over 100 times. I have done many mass plantings for a few years in a row. I have a few trees that the deer and rabbits and natural conditions have not killed. I have not had success with this when doing it with stone, fruit however. Since you basically have to crack the pit and plant what it inside. I got like 1 sapling from 100 plum/cherry pits. So that isn't a good rate.
