A doctor explains the different ways that the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 pandemic might come to an end. Plus some banging tunes.
YES YES OK I MEANT MARCH 5th NOT MAY. Dammit Jim I'm a doctor not a spelling bee champion. I mean I'm Indian, just not THAT Indian.
This is the first of a few planned videos on COVID-19, time permitting. Plans so far are:
- A cheeky movie with a bottle of Corona (this weekend I hope!)
- A closer look at coronavirus and the heart + what happens in the ICU
- Considering how a pandemic might look from my point of view as a hospital doctor.

All coronavirus videos are automatically demonetised (which I think is a good idea) so sneeze this video all over all your friends and infect them with coronavirus songs. PS - yes yes March 5th not May 5th you're just not thinking 4th dimensionally.

I doubt this too be true. In Texas we had Ebola a few years back. We get tornadoes regularly often multiple times a year. Neither thing I have mentioned has over 90% survival rate. We Texans are hearty and brave. The true public message would look like this: "Pfft."
@Madhattersinjeans
@Madhattersinjeans 4 жыл бұрын
@@deckacards More deadly viruses as mentioned in this video are more likely to burn themselves out. Such as Ebola. The flame that burns twice as bright burns half as long. It's the more contagious conditions that have potential to kill that are the concern with the Corona virus. I've seen people handwave this as another flu, but the thing is. No one should be handwaving the flu, if you've ever had it you would not want to deal with it again. I'm so glad people are starting to take public sanitation seriously now. So many other minor and unpleasant conditions can be caught from other people who just don't take the right precautions. This corona virus is a perfect vehicle to push the public worldwide into being a bit more cautious. And on top of that reducing Co2 emissions from unnecessary travel. That said, some things could be better. Things like last minute stockpiling are stupid. Especially of sanitaiton products, if you have all the soap, then no one else does. Congratulations every other person you meet will have an increased risk of carrying the infection you're freaking out about. And the major buyers of those products in the first place will be hospitals and medical staff. What are you gonna do if they run out? Pray? If so, consider a prayer to Thor. Jesus promised to rid the world of evil and cruelty. And yet it remains. The Buddha promised a chance at enlightenment by following the eightfold path, and yet ancient buddhist priests remain on this rock. Muhammad promised paradise for the righteous and hell for the unrighteous and yet the world is no better. Hinduism asks for self sacrifice to make the world a better place and freedom from the cycle of life and rebirth. Thor promised to rid the world of ice giants. I don't see any ice giants around, do you?

Great video! Nothing will change the recommendations of: 1. wash hands (20+ seconds!) 2. don’t touch face 3. don’t shake hands 4. disinfect your cell phone often 5. if you feel fever, cough, fatigue, get that checked out by Dr., as you normally would!
@darkwinter6028
@darkwinter6028 4 жыл бұрын
Re: cell phone. Wipe it down with 70% isopropyl rubbing alcohol on a low-lint paper towel (unless you have an oddball phone, like those new folding-screen ones; it should be harmless to the phone); and if you have access to a UV disinfection machine; use it. If you don’t, then leaving it in direct sunlight for an hour or so will also work; but be sure to put a fan blowing on it so it doesn’t get overheated from the infrared (I.e, heat) coming from the sun. The same applies to tablets, keyboards, and mice, too. Metal and plastic musical instruments can also be treated this way; but I’d be very hesitant to do this to anything made from natural materials (like a piano) - the odds of damage are much higher there.

I can't tell you how often people laugh or roll their eyes at me when I stress the importance of hand washing. It took me time to realize that I need to take certain steps to get sick less often. Washing your hands frequently, not touching your face, and avoiding sick people has helped me a ton! I went from getting serious infections every 3-4 months to getting them only 1-2 times a year by taking that advice seriously. I do hope that COVID-19 will get more people on board with these simple yet significant measures.

14 days is the likely incubation period so if you had contact with someone with corona or were travelling after 14 days you should start showing symptoms so if you are still 100% okay after the 14 days you probably don't have it. I think seasonal flu cases could be lower this time around, simlpy because people are washing their hands more now. I even got my flu shot just yesterday, not because it will do anything about covid19, but at least I'm less likely to burden the health care system even more with a case of the flu. They do have similar symptoms after all. And seasonal flu also really sucks, and we HAVE a vaccine for that - might aswell use it.

"Vaccines normally take the better party of a decade to make." Research into these vaccines started in the 1980's. The first successful phase one human trial of a coronavirus vaccine was conducted by the US in 2016. We create new flu vaccines every year (very different type of vaccine). The statement about how long it takes to create vaccines has been popularized by several prominent academics. One of the main ones that perpetuated it isn't a clinician at all, not even a biomedical scientist, nor a public health expert. What such people neglected to acknowledge (or maybe didn't know) is that we had a decades long head start already, hence we have multiple vaccines available today.

What amazes me about coronavirus is how many people are just now taking precautions against transmission of diseases. Maybe I’m just more of a germaphobe than most people, but things like washing hands, avoiding touching your face, avoiding touching public surfaces and objects (faucets, doorknobs, handrails, pens/pencils, touchscreens, etc), staying far away from people who are sneezing and coughing, self-isolation when sick, etc., are all things I do all the time. It amazes me to see how many people, say, touch a public doorknob and go about their day as if they don’t now have a super dirty hand. If the doorknob was covered in literal poop, would you touch it without feeling gross and needing to wash your hands? No! So why are you treating the doorknob as clean just because the billions of microbes on it are too small for you to see? Makes no sense

Sky Dome incorrect. A behaviour is considered a mental problem only when it detrimentally affects your ability to function. If I was too afraid to even touch a doorknob, and so couldn’t do activities that required touching one, that would be a mental illness. But I don’t have that problem. I still touch doorknobs all the time. I’m just aware that my hands are dirty and don’t stick my fingers in my nose, eyes, or mouth as a result. On the flip side, your lack of germaphobia increases your risk of physical illness, so who’s the real winner here?
@qwerty_and_azerty
@qwerty_and_azerty 4 жыл бұрын
Sky Dome again, I don’t run to wash my hands every time I touch something or every 5 seconds of whatever people with OCD do. Instead, I’m aware of germs and treat my hands as dirty if they are. I wash my hands when appropriate, not all day. You’re making assumptions that aren’t true to justify your reasoning that I must have a mental problem.
@qwerty_and_azerty
@qwerty_and_azerty 4 жыл бұрын
Sky Dome my behaviour is not compulsive, so it can’t be OCD by definition. You didn’t straight up accuse me of having it, but you strongly implied that I might have it. Same thing, really. And even after I stated that I don’t compulsively wash my hands, you keep claiming it sounds like I have OCD and am denying it. As if you somehow know me from a few internet comments better than I know myself. I looked at both links you sent. The first one goes on and on about how I should have dermatitis, discolouration, etc, which I don’t (can’t share a picture on KZbin, but I wish I could show you my hands-they’re fine). The second link states in a clearly marked separate text box “Germaphobia often leads to excessive hand washing. If the need to wash your hands begins to interfere with your daily life, you may have developed OCD.” And I already told you my germaphobia does not lead to excessive hand washing and does not interfere with my daily life. Yet, you still think I have it, which means you didn’t read your own source. As for how chemicals in soap are worse than germs, please provide a link. When I Google search that exact phrase, all the links talk about how antibacterial soap is bad, and I never use antibacterial soap because i already know it’s bad. After you provide a link about soap being worse than germs, I agree this conversation is over.

Yes, I’ve seen that too. Also, in 2019, I was returning home on a flight. Our seats were right at the back, in front of the toilets. I was astonished at the number of times I heard the flush and immediately after, the door opened. Mainly men though. Most men have no idea that lifting the toilet seat and touching the flush (both major sources of urine and faeces germs) requires they was their hands after peeing. They think that because they don’t ‘wipe’ themselves, there is no need to wash their hands. After Covid, those disgusting people who didn’t wash their hands after using the toilet before, will no doubt revert back to not doing it again.

Some questions I'm having a hard time finding answers to: * Of the dead so far, how many would likely also have died as a result of seasonal flu or the common cold * Are criteria for determining cause of death the same with new viruses like COVID, SARS and MERS, and those of seasonal flu and common cold ? * When somebody dies who have pre-existing conditions, how can we say the cause of death was the virus infection and not something else ? What if somebody is infected 5 minutes before they would have died anyway, would that count as having died from the virus ?
@MedlifeCrisis
@MedlifeCrisis 4 жыл бұрын
These are good questions. COVID-19 is the disease, SARS-CoV-2 is the virus. To have COVID-19 you need to test positive for the virus *AND* have symptoms of the disease, so the diagnosis is made by healthcare staff. If you come in with a heart attack and happen to test positive for the virus but do not have 'flu type symptoms, and then die, your cause of death will not be recorded as COVID-19. But if you come in with pneumonia and test positive, it probably will. So there is a judgement call, but in practice it's not too hard to determine who has it and whether it contributed to death. Your first question is a little harder to answer as there is no way of knowing when a person would've died otherwise nor from what, but it is not accurate to say that this is "as deadly as flu" because the mortality rate, ie how many people with the disease go on to die, is much higher than 'flu. However, because 'flu is so widespread and common, it is still causing way more deaths worldwide, as it does every year. So, bottom line, the vast majority of dead from COVID-19 were unwell to begin with and might've died soon, but I don't think there is any doubt in most cases that the virus accelerated their demise.
@Daniela-pr7rz
@Daniela-pr7rz 4 жыл бұрын
@@MedlifeCrisis in my country there are people with no symptoms that tested positive and counted as one with covid-19. they were tested because they came in contact with others infected or came with a plane from a area with many infected. So, "AND have symptoms of the disease" is simply not true.
@melanieketchum3754
@melanieketchum3754 4 жыл бұрын
Daniela d His point was that whether the death is designated as a “COVID-19 death” depends on symptoms. If you are not showing symptoms and are just a carrier, and you die, it won’t be deemed as a result of the virus. Look into the difference between manner of death (there is only FIVE) and the mechanism of death (could be asphyxiation due to pneumonia). They aren’t the same thing from a medical perspective and can alter whether the person officially died as a direct result of the virus or if they just died while infected with the virus.
@Daniela-pr7rz
@Daniela-pr7rz 4 жыл бұрын
@@melanieketchum3754 This is literally what he said "To have COVID-19 you need to test positive for the virus AND have symptoms of the disease, ". And I argued that you can test positive and NOT have symptoms and they count you as one that has COVID 19.
@melanieketchum3754
@melanieketchum3754 4 жыл бұрын
Daniela d My point was that he’s talking about how deaths are counted as being a result of the disease. The distinction of whether the disease killed you is directly related to whether you have symptoms or not. If you’re asymptomatic but test positive, you’re a carrier - you may develop symptoms of you may not. It’s a semantic difference but still important when distinguishing how the deaths from COVID-19 are determined.
