How We Make Our Irrigation Water Reservoirs

Three comments for you that spring from the desire to minimize evaporative loss. 1) The profile I see in your video is based on domestic water reservoirs. A favoriter project for civil engineers. How civil engineers work is they find a proven design over and over again regardless of a specific projects unique demands. We maintain that irrigation reservoirs should have a very different profile. Build your reservoirs as deep as you possibly can and no wider than is necessary to achieve your desired carrying capacity. The rule of thumb is deep and skinny is better than shallow and wide. 2) Always orient your reservoir so that the prevailing winds pass over the short axis of the reservoir. 3) Plant windbreak trees along the berm that the prevailing winds cross first. You will have the benefit of reduced wind passing over your reservoir and some of the reservoir will be cooled by the shade. I hope you find these tips from arid land farming to be beneficial to your operation. Best of luck!

@@oraach This is shared community knowledge. We are forming a loose community via KZbin of like minded people around the globe that are engaged in these types of activities. This discovery comes from a fellow who is building his personal oasis in west Texas USA, almost on the Mexican border, the Chihuahuan Desert Ecoregion. So far he has mule deer, coyotes, flocks of migrating birds using his deep water lake regularly. His lake is not fenced, so he has built a long narrow ramp so that animals can walk down to the water level, or walkout if they fall in accidentally. I'm so happy you found this knowledge useful.

Such an amazing feat shown in this video! I found myself trying to help hoist the pond liner in place too. Your staff and assistants seem strong and well suited for the job. As the liner was spliced together I was amazed at the master doing the job. Anytime I get on something slippery like my metal roof I wear my rubber waders and sit and that stops me from sliding down.

Awesome awesome awesome undertaking. Farming has been a staple profession in my family for God knows when. It is unfortunately slowly dying since pretty much everyone now wants to live the highlife in the big cities. I am gearing to undertake farming seriously. I did a sample ginger farming last year, but the rains did not show up. I will therefore be employing irrigation. I may travel down to Zambia to visit your farm and learn a few techniques from you.
