The mere exposure effect is real! The more we see something, the more familiar it becomes and the more we start to like it. So it makes sense that you were drawn to the Stanley after consuming so much content despite not liking it initially. It also helps us understand why fashion trends that we find weird at first can grow on us over time. Companies have clearly exploited this aspect of our psychology by getting their products in front of us every chance they get - the more we see them, the more likely we are to eventually buy them.

i’m embarrassed to admit that i have definitely been influenced to buy things bc of the exposure effect: it’s so true that when you see something enough times and you see enough people talking about how great it is that it changes your perception on it. i’ve started reducing the amount of fashion related content that i watch bc it was definitely influencing my overconsumption. i love clothes and fashion, and i would consider it a passion of mine so it’s hard to give up. unfortunately, with most fashion creators shopping, hauls, reviews, and trying trends are just part of the gig. it’s so easy to be influenced when watching that kind of content, especially if you’re watching people who have a similar style to you and you’re already predisposed to overconsumption.

I think that pinterest is very underestimated as a factor in (over)consumption. I know for me for example, I don't have tik tok nor I use Insta that much because I don't care too much about the "comments/social" parts but I live on pinterest! I pass hours crafting my boards or just scrolling between beautiful pins and I start daydreaming about the life and aesthetic I want to achieve... and the stuff that I want to buy to do so! Clothes, jewels, skincare, shoes, books, etc... there may not be influencers telling me to buy but oh boy I do that all by myself! Fortunately I'm able to keep myself in track and remind myself to not waste money on stuff and that I don't want to pollute the enviroment... but the impulse to purchase the stuff is still there. It's like if i buy the items I will also buy the lifestyle....

I HATE that Pintrest has added links to items to buy ESPECIALLY if it’s a big box store. I use it as a person who does extremely detailed handcrafted items, but the Amazon links and home goods store links drive me nuts. I love love love looking at aesthetic interior design, but I also feel like “dang my space doesn’t look like that” and half the time the closer I look, the more I find it’s AI generated. My biggest weakness is seeing really beautiful spaces with so many house plants and feeling like poop because I don’t have enough house plants to achieve that look lol.

As a Gen X’er who grew up in the 80’s the band t-shirt situation resonated with me. I went down that hole once, but the ones I was looking for were very expensive because they were from so long ago that they are considered vintage. The cost was a great way to talk myself out of buying. What I did do is start going to concerts again since many of my fav bands are still around. Obviously it’s a different experience now since we are all old 😂, BUT I’d much rather have the memories of the experiences than old vintage shirts.

When I am thinking of buying something I go straight to one/two star reviews or watch a deinfliencing video
@aubreejobizzarro12084 ай бұрын
Yes the 1/2 star reviews help me see critical feedback on products. I feel like reviews these days are not as critical as they used to be, especially if it is a positive review which is always just “I like it! Five stars!” Or “fast shipping, five stars!”. I still write critically positive reviews so people know WHY I like it (describing stitching/construction/cloth feel/ utility/ thoughtful design and what things I don’t like/ don’t work for me.) I need influencers to bring back critical reviews- but maybe that’s what deinfluencing is haha!

The last things I overbought was 4 shades of lip stain liner to realize I wasted $125 because they are dumb and I hate them. And idek how much on perfume samples to realize I hate or ant least do not care for all of them too. It was so disappointing- and that coupled with the deinfluencing/underconsumption videos has helped me continuously choose to not purchase any beauty consumables. I’m just turned off. Also, opening a high yield savings account and making saving goals for every couple of months is inspiring me to save more too

I watched a lot of beauty influencers back in the day, I don’t have any products I regret buying but I do regret buying more than I can actually use. I think for me the shift away from being influenced came from realising that most products actually weren’t things I authentically liked or was organically looking for so they weren’t really “me”. I’m never really tempted to buy things from influencers now and I watch a lot more thrift fashion so I get inspiration not marketing.

I guess I’m not sure what point you’re trying to make… like video game reviewers don’t usually get given affiliate links for games they review. However, I do notice myself start to get hooked and excited about items I see over and over again. I now have a stack of black and white clothes after bingeing 'Wednesday'. Getting stuff I didn't/couldn't have in the past is definitely a trap, especially if you convince yourself that you're rewarding yourself, etc. Like glitter/crystal/unicorn makeup brushes that aren't as good as my boring Real Techniques ones, or that band t-shirt featuring the album I thought was "meh" in the 90s, but I had convinced myself I had to have it now because it was on sale, and remember those old days in the indie record store wanting shirts like that?? Today I calculated the amount I am saving every month currently along with the interest I will get in next 30 years and ut was eye opening. With the inflation rate it will not be possible to sustain normal life if I do not have my own home by retirement. This has really shook me. Save more guys and invest more, the need to be financially independent is much much more in the old age. 😢 I am not even a parent yet and the additional cost per child is just so anxiety inducing. Regarding the samba shoes, a girl got multiple pairs and then was complaining how uncomfortable they were and adidas from their own account replied "for fashion lolz". Like the brand is agreeing they are not comfortable for prolonged wear and people are still going mad over that. I have made a habit of not buying anything when it is freshly launched, if people are still talking about it after 4-5 months then only it is worth looking into .

I asked for a 30$ one with the little top handle for Christmas because my large 60oz “Canteen” water bottle was 1- so large to carry and 2- I lost the straw and I could not find a replacement ANYWHERE. Having to lift 60oz to your face with the top it had was asking for a chipped tooth. I think Stanley’s are super well built but I don’t think you need to spend 60$ on a drinking cup.

i tend to live around the virtual youtubing sphere of the internet (as evident by my icon) and ngl i've been REALLY itching to buy more merchandise. there's a lot of photos on twitter of all the shrines that people set up for their favorite streamers and it makes me SO envious because i also wish i had one but i can never stick around long enough with an interest to accumulate merch for it. they're not influencers by any means, just fans expressing their love for their idol but it makes me feel lacking somehow, which is just weird when i actually have a mostly fulfilling life and don't really depend on public figures for any kind of happiness like i used to. sometimes i catch myself watching streamers just because i want to justify buying their merch LOL but everything is so expensive i can't really do that. it's so hard to justify buying a $100+ merch set just for the postcard that comes with it.
@umikanata4 ай бұрын
like legitimately i refresh the shop every day for merch because one time i missed a release and had to wait for a restock, and a lot of the merch is limited time only, so you can never buy them again either. it just induces a massive amount of FOMO lol. and that's all before sustainability/environmental concerns... but honestly i hope someone does a deep dive into oshikatsu culture because it sounds fun but as a lifestyle seems kinda stressful and wasteful (even as someone who does engage with it to a degree)

there's def art supplies and little things i saw people use. like there's sparkly watercolors i saw used in Kaiteiki-Art's videos and was like "oh hey i can use this", also some of her videos made me fall into the fountain pen ink rabbit hole. but there's also video's of her and others i have seen i just went "i don't need that, i got enough of this other brand that works for me". i think i also stopped watching as many set reviews as i used to for a while. because a lot of them we just the same video of people swatching the paints. and nothing else. some did do example paintings which were a lot better for me to judge if i wanted a few colors maybe of that brand or anything. but i have a lot of watercolors and stuff. so unless it's a color i don't have a lot of already. i tend to not even look up the paints after watching a review. there's only so many paints a person can use. and decent watercolor. a little goes a long way. i actually now mostly buy my watercolor from this guy that handmakes them even on some youtube streams. and his paints have the pigment info i might need. and it's really good paint. i got into Copic alcohol markers because an art youtuber i really liked at the time used em, and i think they were like the only decent alcohol markers at the time that was purchasable, they were a big purchase for me back then, but hey i am still using them to this day, they have been with me for like a decade now, i just buy ink refills and they are good to go again. over time i bought a few ones on Art Supply Store trips when i got the chance to go to one. so now i have like 50 Copic markers because well expensive. these days new alcohol marker brands are popping up left and right. Ohuhu is an influencer darling RN. never bought em, did think about it a few times. but something about the brand always seemed off to me. turns out i was partially right. they keep sending free products to big art youtubers or smaller sized ones. and sponsoring people left and right. always the same talking points. people are hailing them as the Copic killer and what not. someone who is a professional with alcohol markers put them to the test. and found out a lot about the company and their products. and even tried testing them. they were just a slight step above those cheap as hell Temu alcohol markers you might have seen float around. their color numbering system is bad. the ink fades badly and fast in some colors. not to say Copic ink doesn't do this, it's in the nature of Dye's. but some dye's fade more than others. Ohuhu seems to use dye's that fade faster than what Copic seems to use in their markers. so i am actually glad i got into alcohol markers when i did. because i bought stuff that with proper care and usage lasts a long time. i also i saw the stationary girlies on instagram with those vintage looking page clasps. then came across something similar on aliexpress and after some thinking did buy one. because i actually did have some problems of keeping sketchbook pages from staying down. and clothes pins just left marks on the paper. and actually it's a useful little thingie and i am now using it a lot. and it leaves no marks on my paper. so it's actually not been a bad purchase for what i need it to do. but there is also a lot of stuff i see these people use and just go "i don't need that", " who needs 10,000 stickers", "why do you have 10 different tiny scissors? you only need maybe 3 at most". the constant tapping on stuff. it's there too. sometimes the lenght of those peoples nails.. how do you not scratch your own paper with all those bedazzles. it's a lot. also they seem to call Scrapbooking "Journaling". what most are doing is not writing stuff. it's just making collage art., it's just that they do it in a notebook. it reminds me more of my moms cardmaking hobby. which there is a lot of overlap on the stuff they use, which is kinda interesting. so yeah seems i am more easily influenced into buying art stuff if i can deem it usefull for me to work with.... other way around with those 3 fountain pens i got. i just saw them on the insta of the inkbrand i got. and really liked the look of them. or it reminded me of a favorite game/anime character. a fancy blue one i got because i just found it super pretty, i bought an orange one because i had a massive case of Dragonball on the Brain and the color reminded me of Goku, didn't help it was around the time the author of DB passed away. then a fancy green one because it just gave me Major Link from the Legend of Zelda series vibes. i don't find this green one to hold in my hand as nice. but i can't return it now. i will see what i'll end up doing with this one. but i do find myself writing stuff down with the Blue and Orange one when i get a good chance to use em. so yeah i am not immune to influencer marketing, there is a lot i question, not that i would really call the people that do have a slight inpact influerncers in the more common these days way. but it comes from the weirdest places. ok why did i write this much?

I think with the rainbow palette there are a lot of things that sell because they are beautiful in a rainbow. When you see them in s advert in a rainbow they look great but the single one you buy in one colour isn't nearly as pretty. Which is another reason influencers over consume is because they know a rainbow of products will entice people in a way one won't.

Like nope Mostly I follow us because I am in phase where I am interested insubject or I enjoy something

You know what’s so funny to me is that I watched a deinfluencing video about the Stanley cup craze… which influenced me to buy a Stanley cup. So it had the opposite effect. lol

I am guilty of this too... I bought an exfoliate set by Paula Choice due to some influencers. Thankfully I never got the big set, but the tiny, most inexpensive set of the same items. They were Meh at best (again thankful I never got the bigger sizes). I also hate these so-called "Board certified" dermatologists who fail to understand that everyones' skin is different and fail to give warnings or disclaimer that some people are allergic to sunscreens and the products they are showcasing (this make me question their actual certifications and qualifications in their profession; people can make simple mistakes, but if their mistake will literally cause the death of another human being something is seriously wrong with them). People should ALWAYS taker these influence people with a grain of salt, as the saying goes and be aware that these products may not work. I always return back to the stuff that I know always worked for me. Likas soap, wash cloth (as a scrub), Freeman masks and arnica gel with rose oil. Currently, I am learning from herbalist channels how to make my own hair oils using olive oil as the main based oil to extract nutrients and oils from the plants I grow in my garden. Thank you for your video explaining all of this to the people and make folks out there to be aware that these influencers do not have the best interest in others, regardless of being board certified or not. There needs to be a video on questioning the unethical practice of these so-called "doctor" dentist", "dermatologist", etc influencers who can and will harm people who may feel trusting of these certified doctors and such.

Wait you think that drs need to tell people that some people are allergic to SPF as if that's the most common allergy that everyone on earth is suseptible to? You do realize SPF is an anti cancer drug, and people being allergic to it doesn't make it any less important for the billions of people who are not allergic to SPF, right? It's not any drs responsibility to tell people that other people have allergies. Some people are allergic to water, do they also need to warn people about that? It's on the person with the allergies to keep track of what they're allergic to. Drs are not going to sit there and remind everyone that people have allergies, and them not doing that doesn't make them any less of a dr. Your expectations are insane

No way is it overblown! take a look at Mr. Beast and the influence he has over the spending power of children.

You also really need to be careful of bright colored makeup palettes. The amount of times we dont read packaging. On the back of several of Urban Decays brighter palettes youll see a disclaimer staying this makeup is not meant to be used near eyes.... yet its an eyeshadow palette. How many of these beauty products are sold to people who blind buy but the makeup has very toxic chemicals to be putting on your face.
