When I watch and listen to You guys, I am reminded of what an old sailor told me +40 years ago: "You got to view the renovation/preparations of your boat as a part of the dream, not as something You do before You start to live your dream". I am not sure I understood what he meant back then, but now I do....and he was so right and that goes for a lot of things we do in life, no matter if it is a boat, a house, a car, a relationship or whatever...and so are You guys when You understand and implement the noble art of living the good life while doing the renovations/preparations. Eating good food, enjoying life together and watching the sun go down/rise. I really like your attitude and the way You are looking at things. It is so naturally logic, smart/smooth and with great acceptance/knowledge of the sacrifices included. So many people are rushing thru these things, not You...you are doing quality work during quality time. Best of luck! :)

My number one show stopper when buying both my boats. No teak deck! A Najad 44 at $20. Not with a teak deck. I would have to remove it. Nothing makes your boat more hot and leaky than a teak deck. Lucky the previous owners removed our teak deck and had the deck glassed.

Although a teak deck looks "the part" . When i bought my "zeeschouw" i would have walked away if she had a teak deck . My last boat did have a teak deck , without a plywood or steel deck under it . All the years i have had that boat i was battling leaks . The boat i have now has a steel deck and man can they rust underneath that teak . In your case , i would fill the holes in the under deck an stick it back on . Rusting is not a problem with polyester .

@@philgray1023As beautiful as teak decking is and great for non-skid, it can get extremely hot. When the time comes, probably soon, I will remove it and glass over the substrate and apply a non-skid over the paint.

@@randyhilton6629 I was racing on a boat this week that had teak toe rails. They were grey, weathered and had green algae growing on the inside. This on a boat that is used 1 to 3 days a week and gets washed once a week in a hot climate. We have a small amount on our sugar scoop and cockpit seats. All maintained by my wife. She is not a fan and hates the job every 6 months. It takes me two weeks to persuade her to get onto it. Having complete covers helps keep it looking ok.

We have the same project down our road. You did an amazing job getting that off in a couple parts. After removing the bungs and screws on one of our hatch it seems our deck is really bedded down well and I don't think we will be able to do the same. That said after seeing this I think we will wait to replace bungs until we are ready for a larger project including some record work. Cheers. Thanks for the video.

Glad you got the chance to work with Smith's CEPS. I had suggested it to you when you were debating about the beam repairs on MC II, before you realized the extent of the damage. This is a better application. It's designed to stabilize wood compromised by rot. Applying it to sound wood is brilliant and will give the new owners decades of good service. Another great video.

Great job guys. Painstaking work, as usual. Totally surprised the teak came off in one piece. I paused your video at the point where only the starboard side had teak and the port side was white gelcote. Imagining the white to be pristine non-slip couldn't compare with the teak on the other side, even with the holes where you took out the plugs. I know there's a heap of reasons why it would be easier initially and long term not to renovate and replace the teak but I believe she wouldn't be the class of boat without it. I've seen how resourceful Aladino can be, I'm sure he can figure a way to deal with potential water problems. Over the last few months I've watched you both make logical decisions on renovations and changes to the Cape George. Now, yey or nay to the teak, I think is probably one of the most difficult you've faced.

Came across an abandoned boat in a back channel in Louisiana which carried a beautiful teak deck, why was it dumped only those that did the need know, it took me a week, but I was able to remove and save better than 90% of the teak which then was given to my brother for his Victoria 18 restoration. Greg passed in October, but the Victoria was completed and remains a beautiful restoration. And yes, the teak was fitted and adhered with the correct adhesive no screws in the cabin & the deck. Nice watching Aladino's craftsmanship in action.

Concerning the eventual teak re-laying, pls also consider that MC1 is not only a std (beautiful) Vindo 32, but it will be YOUR special "home"boat for 2 more yrs, when sailing her without the teak deck it won't be the same: some of her soul and of your special tender relationship with her will be missing. Well, I was really hoping your could just glue the old deck down once you epoxied all the screw holes, but now that I've seen how beautifully the deck came off, I'm really, REALLY hoping you can just glue the old deck back down. It's clearly got a lot of life left in it and hopefully the fears over cost were somewhat alleviated once you saw how little of the teak might need to be replaced.

I think the teak deck is still beautiful and still has enough life to glue back down (once the deck is sealed and prep'ed), replace the bungs, sand and oil it. I also think it will add value to Magic Carpet I and will not only help with a fast and profitable resale, but will be aesthetically pleasing and satisfying knowing it was a job well done. We all hope the best of luck with it.

@@Davidcallard I don't think there is a consensus. As far as I know there are no downsides to oiling a teak deck, but it does require regular reapplication every few months to keep it looking nice. Many people choose to let their teak grey out because they either like the look or have better things to spend their time on.

I just cannot believe that deck came up in two pieces. I assumed you would have to pull every board up one at a time. But I agree with most of the other comments, I think that refurbishing and reinstalling the teak deck will bring more in the resale value as well as giving the boat a very distinct look. Either way Aladino is one hell of a shipwright, and Maya is no slouch herself when it comes to knowing her way around the boat. I’ve been watching you guys since the very beginning and I cannot wait to see that Cape George in deep blue water.

While there may be some who get frustrated by the lack of sailing content, I view the maintenance and refitting processes as being a more wholistic view of ownership. What a wonderful work! It has been nice to see, how the teak deck has come loose from the laminate. I think, that those deck is one surface (8 mm thick?) in which the board structure was milled in. Thanks! Eine wirklich super gemachte Arbeit! Es war schön anzusehen, wie sich das Teak-Deck vom darunter befindlichen Laminat löste. Will it now become the wall of a seafood restaurant? Of the sailors I've met so far: we all love teak, but we don't want a boat with a beautiful teak deck because of all the issues Aladino mentioned. Most of us still like teak table tops - not too much maintenance. It's also a diminishing natural resource. I can't wait to see what you do to replace it, even if it's to put it back.

That teak removal was nothing short of amazing planning, preparation and execution. I can see why you don’t like using silicone sealer on wooden boats. It really makes it difficult to work on repair or replace. The stained wood was absolutely beautiful. Is that a typical boat color or what color did you use on this boat? That color would make a gorgeous 3-shelf unit I have that is also made out of mahogany.

If you will be selling the boat right after completing your refit, then leave the teak deck off and give the purchaser the right of deciding to install ( at an additional cost ) the teak deck or leave it off! Keep up the good work! PS Kudos to Maya for removing all the plugs and screws, which in fact facilitated the whole job! JIM 🤔😍

Gorgeous teak deck which you meticulously removed should definitely be glued back on! Question about the floor of the building you are working in. What is the floor made of? Looks like stone. Which brings another question as to where does the stone come from?

Ironically another channel I watch is also replacing their old teak deck though they have not made an episode about it. You might if you scrap the teak take a leaf out of their book as they are selling parts of it on their website for souvenirs or for reuse. Not sure if they have finished the job but its a lot larger than your boat over 600feet as its the WW2 Battleship New Jersey. Hence the irony.
