My first road bike was a Trek 2300 with a Campy Veloce 9 groupset. It was a garage find in my ex-girlfriend's dad's house. I gave it the initial TLC and got it rideable. I found a new hobby/obsession and never looked back. As I advanced as a rider, I upgraded parts and made it lighter, got a decent wheelset too. I eventually cannibalized it to build up my current Giant Propel frame. I also upgraded a lot on the Propel over time. Just this past weekend, I rebuilt the Trek 2300 with all the leftover parts I had accumulated. Taking everything I have learned from this channel, I got all my components immaculately clean, oiled, and greased. I redid the headsets, new cables, set up my chain for waxing, new bar tape. She is a beauty. She rides better than ever, and the Veloce 9 shifting FEELS too amazing to be true. It is so crisp, I'm wondering if those engineers new something extra 20-30 years ago. Thank you for this channel. You make me a better mechanic, which in turn makes me a better cyclist.

Still have a 2009 Defy 1 with all 105 components. New Paradigm Elite wheels and Ultegra cassette plus KMC chain. Never saw the need to get a carbon frame since the Defy rode so well with a better saddle and handlebars.

a sweet older Defy, 3x8 should put in some good work for a new rider with plenty of gears to choose from. 3x is quite a dirty word nowadays, but growing up in the 80s, and having lots of fun on MTB in the 90s, a 3x was always a good thing! Nowadays I have an all-road/ gravel bike: A WHY cycles R+ (which was my first type of drop bar bike) that suits me for my mix of gravel, endurance (road) riding and urban riding around NYC. With 2 sets of wheels and tires, its all the bike I need for all the riding I do !

Always nice to work on a mechanical shifting bike.once everything is cleaned and lube, the bike can always tells u everything feels great and smooth. All the threads feel smooth and glide nicely on. Once all done, the bike feels like it's soul is refreshed and ready to give rider thousands of miles of enjoyment. Nice

Thank you for your videos! I am very disappointed with a bike service in Kazakhstan. I've asked to install a drop bar on an vintage MTB and I've crashed because the handle bars rotated in the stem. And was disappointed when was servicing my road bike in a different service. I am planning to buy my own set of tools and DIY service both of my bikes. Your videos are very helpful :)

A 1983 Peugeot Paris Nice was my first, bought new a year or so after production, so discounted. I saved up pocket money & birthday money to buy. I got some serious miles out of that bike, but by the end very few original components were left. It had a hard life & had become a flat bar commuter. In the end all the components were stripped off, sold & the frame was scrapped. Sad, but it needed some attention from a frame builder, a respray & the original forks had already been replaced. 😢 It wasn't worth the money to rectify. It's replacement was my EGBates from an east London shop, that's still going strong.

Nice job!!!, you can notice that the bike was stored inside all the time!!! When I was young we trained on tiagra 4400 group sets, back then I decided to buy a tiagra triple group set for my elder years, I have spare cassettes, chainrings, Italian and British bottom brackets and clamp on an direct mount front derailleurs, cones, freehub bodies, etc. Also I have the flat handlebar shifters. A bit crazy I know.....

Nice Job as always. My first road bike I bought was a Peugeot Esprit 1984, got it in 1985 cost 2 weeks wages. road it for 3 years including first year of races. Had a road bike before that that was a spray job (probably nicked, didn't know at the time) that I got in a swap with a Raleigh chopper. It had no handlebars and I rode it up the road to my place steering the stem, No idea what that bike was. ahh the 80's lol. Drew.

My first roadie, only just over 2 years ago, was a Giant Defy Advanced, so I v much appreciate this vid! Mine came with a 'broken wing' - the previous owner broke a seat stay with an ill-placed iron rod and the carbon was well fixed by a boat builder. It's still my ride and I just wish I could afford a new group set: it's hit the deck and has some clunky elements about shifting. Oh well: still in pretty good condition.

very nice. I enjoy all your rebuild / service videos. I got into cycling in the early 80s when the Kelloggs City Centre Crits were televised every summer. I enjoyed many years after of road racing and TTing, competing alongside some of the UK pro teams in the mid to late 90s before ill health made me pack up in my late 40s. The sport gave me so much in terms of friendship and camaraderie - training rides, the chain gang and then racing some times 4 times a week in the summer. I'd do it all again in a heartbeat 🙂

This weather plays havoc with my bikes so have just stripped my road bike and given it a complete service pretty much like you did to this bike and it looks a million dollars. Am now in the process of doing the same to my hybrid and will not be using either until the weather improves but I do have an old 3 speed hack which is looking a bit sorry for itself but a quick sponge down and oil the chain every so often and we'll be good to go. Exactly the type of bike I want to buy second hand right now to restore/rebuild/clean it, although with a somewhat newer groupset. Beautiful bike, awesome rebuild video once again. Would be a great addition to my do-it-all-but-nothing-perfectly gravelbike, but no supply in my area unfortunately, just plethora of TCR's that have a fit just a bit too aggressive for my liking.

I still love my 2014 Giant Defy. It is my winter training bike. My first road bike was a 1987 Raleigh Record Ace. It was brilliant until someone stole it.

First semi serious road bike was a Viking Vision - I had the poor guy in the bike shop persecuted calling in every few days to tell him how my savings to buy it were progressing. By the time I had about 70% of the money my folks stepped in with the balance and my proper cycling journey started. Rode it in the 1987 Hardings Junior Tour of Ireland (bike was grand, me not quite so though).

Another high quality production fellas!! Are you planning on putting tools on the wall above the work bench? It feels like it's missing something imo.

We have recently put stock on it but it won’t feature in the videos till after Christmas as some videos we’ve had on the go for a few weeks and keep taking it off to keep the consistency 🧡

My first road bike in my teens was an early 90s Peugeot Altus 531 with 105 groupet and white Rolls saddle. T-boned it into a car and put me off road cycling for decades. Now in my late 40s I’ve just bought a used Boardman SLR 8.9 just to test the water again and see if I have the nerve. Actually enjoying it so far, it’s got my lusting after more exotic machinery unfortunately! I may have created a new spending habit! 😝

This is some excellent editing. It must have taken a lot of hours to sync together pieces of videos from multiple cameras. Good job. One question for you….I don’t think we have ever seen you remove a seatpost from a frame to examine, inspect or maintain this part. Could you discuss process of removal and preventative maintenance for stuck or otherwise seatposts in a future video? 👍🏻

Good question! I was pondering on something similar....I have a new old stock frame I'm building up and an old campy 27.2 post I was using on another frame was in very tight, is there a way to widen the notch on the seat tube slightly without bending or marring the paint?

It’s a tricky area, we in general do not touch seat posts in a standard service, it’s easy to write a bike off trying and for our small service charge we can’t afford to replace thousands of pounds worth of bikes if it cracks inside our four walls. 🧡

My first road bike was a Giant SCR2, also a triple. Not the prettiest but it was a great bike and I would say you can't really go wrong with a used one as a way into cycling. If you can find a clean one those Giant alloy frames are really good, with a nice paint job.
