Sailing Uma

4 жыл бұрын

We are often asked: How do we keep sailing through the night?
The truth is, there is no exact science, nor do we really stick with a strict schedule. Through out our journey, we figured out a way that works best for the two of us. This mini-step gives you a glimpse of how we sail at night, our watch system, and what we do to NOT be bored.
Cheers, and see you tomorrow!

Just an observation from Day 4 but if you are sailing east how does the sun rise astern of you? Fair winds.
@SailingUma
@SailingUma 4 жыл бұрын
Because there was ZERO wind, so we were just bobbing around waiting for it to fill in and the boat was spinning in all directions. It's like being at anchor and quite relaxing to just chill for a few hours in the middle of a passage. It's like hitting pause for a bit.

Best wishes from Montreal. Love what you guys are doing, especially the way you are diesel-free. Your willingness to sail everywhere, and your acceptance of the additional challenges a no-diesel lifestyle presents is fantastic. Dan, I love the way you respect and support Kika, never talk over her, always encourage her: it's a recipe for long term success. Kika, there is nothing more awesome than a woman who rises to challenges like you do, and isn't afraid to challenge herself. Keep it up both of you.

All the racket in the background brings back so many memories of time on the water with my sailboats. Lol. It's so nice when your up on deck then you go below to sleep and realize how noisy it is!
@JustMe-pp1mp
@JustMe-pp1mp 4 жыл бұрын
I can remember STEPS with Dan on his back putting wedges on spots below the sole to stop the squeaking and another STEP with him up the mast running wires through PVC tubing to prevent the slapping sounds. From the noise in this video methinks he will be able to make a few more videos on noise abatement. Although, not being a sailor, I fear thre might not be much he can do. After all Dan is Dan and if it can be fixed, or improved on, he would have done it by now. OR that might be STEP 192.05
@appick01
@appick01 4 жыл бұрын
@@JustMe-pp1mp yeah the way to keep the wire slapping in the mast down is with the mast off the boat you install conduit in the mast and rivet it in place. That being said I'm pretty sure there's more than just wires making noise because there's always some slapping or banging the mast. Makes me miss my friends boat with a wood mast. Still lots of creaky cabinet work down below though.

The Sea Birds were amazing. At 3:17 the shot was fantastic and they look bigger than I thought in earlier shots. At 3:59 the waves were as big as your boat. 1st time I saw the lights under the boat. Very neat but did not see any creatures. Philosophy has been part of sailing since there were ships at sea. The stars must just pop out on a clear night without any man-made light disturbing them. I know I am 8 months late. But, I am viewing it as it just happened. Happy Trails

Wow, living in such a tiny space and out in the deep blue and the words polite and courtesy take on such a deeper meaning! Love the way that is so natural for you two! Could you imagine living in a house of a size as to need to call out to see if anyone was home????' Lolol We are fighting here as the laws and regulations force us to build outside the plans we had for a tiny house, we already live in one that is part of the family home and we desire to not enlarge with a new home of our own. We like the smaller more intimate space and we will not give up! Watching your vids have encouraged us to follow our tiny dream! Thank you both so much for your efforts!

The daily videos are epic, they give us landlubbers a glimpse into life onboard in inclement weather. With all the movement my first thought when you made your coffee was „why isn‘t Dan keeping all the dangerous stuff (kettle, coffeemaker, mug) in the sink?“ Maybe it‘s because I have burned 4 fingers of my right hand last year which was no fun (no lasting damages, but two or three weeks nuisance).

Absolutely awe struck at the breathtaking beauty of our Gods creation, how much more magnificent it must be to experience it first hand, the way that u guys do. (Sigh) u two r so inspiring, never gave sailing much thought until I stumbled across ur video... I must say that after watching all the sheer beauty, I'd be interested in learning all there is to know about it (I'm sure there's ALOT of tedious study with years of practice), just to get up to the point of where u guys are. For quite some time now, ive had such an unfathomable infatuation about the sea,specifically far out in the sea. Like something deep within my spirit that stirs up just at the mere thought of it. That's actually how I came across this video, I searched 'footage of being out at sea' lol...I know I sound totally crazy, but that's ok 😆 anyway, thank u guys so much for sharing ur experience and taking us along on such an incredible journey. Maybe one day, if the Lord wills, we will see eachother out in the deep blue as we sail past one another with nothing else in sight but God's masterpiece 🤗 may the Lord bless you and encompass u with His mighty angels as u sail upon the sea 😇🙏
