I'm living paycheck to paycheck but God has been good to me and my children. I pay my tithes and offering faithfully. My bills are always paid. I'm a single mom of three by the way. You are preaching what I have been doing most of my adult life. Now I have a adult daughter that has been observing me and was telling me that it was difficult to say no to invitations... I would like to tell my answer to her. I did ask her to have her friends over and talk about money for real. We would be very surprise to see how stress are these people with nice cars and nice things. I prefer to be able to sleep very well at night than wondering how we will make payments.

It has grown hugely. I have taken clothes people give me and took out baby blankets for people or even larger ones and used on my dog's beds which are small canvas cots. I don't even have to buy books anymore and except for underwear and shoes have not purchased clothes for years now and I work in a law firm, not going shabby

This is incredible! I somehow falsely assumed that you were frugal most of your life. I have a very similar story and I rewarded myself with a new car when I graduated with my Bachelors at 26. (I graduated later in life). I still have the car and am planning to keep the car another 6 years, if I can! Thankfully I got a large raise 6 months ago, and I've been able to save a lot more this year. I have a $118,000 mortgage and am $72,000 in student loan debt. I've been stretching my money here and there but I know that I can do more, as far as being frugal. Thank you for your videos. I believe you offer practical advice, in a very relatable way. I'm glad I discovered your channel Dana.

Another thing you can do, if you have a school of beauty in your town, they usually charge less to let the students cut hair and learn styles (if you're not really picky on how your hair looks...) I usually just put my hair in a bun, but to keep it healthy, I get a trim every 6 months. It's usually half the cost of even the cheaper of salons!

Tip. Keep hair simple. Keep it long. Cut ends and fringes when hair is wet and USE DRESS MAKING PINKING SHEARS! Because of the ceration you don't get that awful chopped, straight line look amateurs often get when they use kitchen scissors or hairdressing scissors. The shears mimic the snipping the hairdresser does without the bill. If you want to do simple cuts as per KZbin then pinking shears work for those also. If you use colour for grays buy a wash in six week treatment the same colour as your natural colour. Using cheap dies looks obvious unless it's a close match. This has worked for me for over five years. The hairdressers is an occassional treat not a six weekly money pit. Also study what they do to inform your skills!

I got onto Dave about 3 months ago. And the changes I've made already are incredible. I have the 1k emergency fund. I've paid off bigger chunks of debt than i ever have. I don't buy... anything lol, well food and general expenses. Haven't bought clothes, shoes, electronics or anything like that in a few months. It helps to make budgeting a game, to see a graph of last months spending (pocketbook great app) go way wat down has helped. I got a second job weeding people's gardens, I'm not a gardener but it's not hard. I'm now in transition with my full time job and I've had about 4 weeks in the last two months with no work. And if I hadn't of gotten into Dave's book I would be struggling super hard right now. I had an account set up for an extra months rent, and one for emergency... and i haven't had to touch the emergency yay!

You also make less money on your paycheck because you are paying for someone else's responsibility in regard to health. She could have went to her local ER which was closer. NO ONE would have turned her away because of her inability to pay. It is illegal to do so. The Urgent Care Clinic she went to was probably privately owned by a doctor's group which can deny care if not affiliated with a hospital. As for the 80.00, she could have paid it or waited to pay it ten years from the date, wouldn't have mattered. So no, I don't want to pay for anyone else. My taxes are high enough.

Your "I've had it" story made me tear up. That poor baby. Thank you for sharing! I think it's so important to draw out the "why" for your reasons for being debt free and tie it to something deeper than the money. I'm about halfway through paying off my loans now. I did the same with the new car after college. If you decided to keep it and pay it off, did you refinance at a lower rate to pay off faster?

Rewatching this video now as a reminder 👍 I’m completely debt free. I ended up keeping the car and just paying that off super aggressively. I’m on steps 4-6 now. As a culture we have to stop giving gifts to everyone for every little occasion. The adults in our family stopped extended gift exchanges years ago, it was just too out of hand and the gift giving holidays were a drudge, so we stopped. Instead we get together, cook awesome meals, and play cards. All enjoyable and way less money. The kids get a few things. My husband and I share our plans for the 2 or 3 items we are getting our son and ask family members to send a check if they feel inclined. Everything over the cost of the gifts goes to the college fund savings account and no one is paying for shipping. We put everyone's name on the "from" portion of the gift lavel.

Just found your videos and they are very inspiring. Most of you gals might be too young to remember the book, The Tightwad Gazette, (highly recommend it - you can find it at the library, Amazon, or eBay). I learned a lot of really great money saving tips from it but one thing that stood out was investment purchases, purchases that save you money in the long run, such as a particular tool or appliance that will save you money. You mentioned in one video about hanging your clothes on the line. Not only does it save on your utility bill, but the clothes smell wonderful and they last much longer.

Thank you for your honesty and generousity. Something I read was that people who live paycheque to paycheque are used to spending everything and it's a habit. Apparently, if they receive a 'windfall' of money say gift, inheritance, good sale with this mind set they will spend it the same way. Average time to spend 'windfall' is eighteen months and then it's pack to paycheque living. You have been warned. I did this which is why I'm sharing.

Dana, I can really relate to this! I love to hear that other people are making sacrifices in life to get on track with their finances too. Yes, it's hard and I can relate to your story about the ER vs. Urgent Care. There was one time we sat in the ER for 5 hours waiting!!!! When we could have just waited to see the Dr. the next morning but because of our child's heart condition we felt it was important enough to go to ER but to wait that long anyways was horrible and it cost us a lot of money we didn't have at the time. It's hard sometimes to make some decisions especially when it comes to our children's health. We try to do our best as parents for our children even though it has costed us a lot of money over time. It just makes us work harder to save back money so we aren't in the same situation again. I love to hear your videos and love the help you offer to others by putting out these informative videos, thanks Dana!!

Your story on how you started revolving debt from the age of 16 is so similar to mine. Same thing, everyone tells you that you need to get a credit card to build credit. So of course at 18, I got my first card. Then just like you, it was like we never had enough to cover expenses so we would use our cards as a buffer. Terrible!! Never ending cycle if you do that. Thank you for sharing!

It is really hard to change but so worth it. I had to sit down with my sisters and mum and just tell them to completely ignore me whenever I suggested going out somewhere that would cost money. Almost every week, I'd be saying something like, we should go out for a big family Sunday lunch, we should book a cottage for the school holidays... Being debt free and building my savings feels better than any of those expensive days/weeks out. I love my family and love to spend time with them, but, I know realize that does not have to mean it's costing me a lot of money.

Hi there Dana!!! I am new to your channel and really like you :) Your story of your son going to the urgent care/hosp. brought me to tears. I've watched a few of your videos now and this one is my favorite so far. I would like to stop living paycheck to paycheck and have a savings account once again. I have been Vegan for the animals for over a decade and love that you promote it and ask people to stop eating "meat." Thanks so much and I wish you health and wealth always!!! Your friend, Petra from North Carolina :)

The story with your boy being sick was so painful. I'm sorry you had to go through that. When my grandmother was getting too sick, my extended family kept telling themselves that public hospital was fine (in my country it isn't). She passed away, she was old and sick, but I will never shake off the question of whether or not she could have stayed with us longer. The same happened 14 years later when my father had a stroke and refused to be operated because (in his depression) he felt he failed in giving us a decent life so he didn't want to be a burden anymore. He did survive and I would pay the world for that. I never had a "frugal epiphany" moment, but I will never see my family go through this again, I am frugal I suppose, I grow stuff and reuse clothes and have been saving two thirds of everything I make for rent and savings. But it's starting to pay off, the last 2months I finally managed to get to a point where my savings are generating 50$ a month (my basic goal for the past 7 years :-D)

I can't wait to get there. I'm pretty close. 18,000. I love it how the kids just jump in. U don't whoosh them away or have them read a script. And that's how I know u are real and keeping it real :)

+Griselle Isara Thank you so much! The whole family is typically sitting in the room when I film. (Small house) haha! We're all so used to it after 4 years. LOL!

Peggy Ghirardello. That’s what I do. I look for bargains all year round; pick up what’s on sale and put it aside for when I need it!

Amen. I really felt your pressure about choosing Urgent care over the ER. For me in is 600.00 plus for ER because of my children's deductible. Things always seem to happen after the Chiropractor or Urgent care are closed. Glad everything worked out for your little guy.

Dana - I love how you referenced the Lord. I think a lot of us sometimes have to be like the prodigal son and find ourselves in the proverbial pigs pen with our choices. The scripture that reminds me how I should approach discipline is what the Bible says in Hebrews 10:12… that discipline never feels good at the time but it builds peace and righteousness. I tried to remember that when I had to cut back our expenses to pay off debt. We did it 🥰
