Keep in mind that it wasn't until the 1890's that France started importing bathtubs from England. Before that point only people who were wealthy enough to travel to the UK , buy one and then have it shipped to them in France could have such a luxury. There were tin or lead tubs that people stood or sat in with a jug of hot water to wet themself with, then soap up and then rinse off....I read about it in the International Herald Tribune as a momentous day in history for France on the 100th anniversary!!! I was with a friend, another American that lived here in Paris back then and we had a good laugh about how some still don't know how to use it, like Russians during WWII stealing tubs and toilets but having no concept of plumbing...

Julie please keep the library light colored so it is easy to read in at any time of day. The wood colored filler pens are great to use or a refinishing stain. I am an Army wife and have used lots of things to repair scratches and dents on furniture.

My vote for the library wall color is a creamy ochre or honey. It’s soothing and also could be quite neutral as most libraries are painted with men in mind - such as a dark red, grey, black, deep blue etc. A honey tone would keep the room light, but still give the effect of a deep, rich color. It might even make the piano pop out a bit more. The maintenance of it would be easier than the cream. I never recommend a deep red, only because if you change your mind, red is so horrible to try to cover up. You need to do many coats of primer over red to change it. I always equate red as an angry color, and it could make someone’s mood swing quite quickly upon entering the room. Not what you want in a library or music room.

I agree with you about a rich creamy ochre or honey . Will definitely compliment the stone mantle surround , the leather sofa , and the wood of the piano . Paired with complimentary shades of green in the Library . Warm , cozy , and comfortable furniture providing excellent back support while reading 📚 is key in a Library . Back and neck support and great lighting provided by wall sconces and table lamps for evening and wintertime reading .

Please don't make the library dark. Taking away that natural reflected light would make the beautiful plaster more difficult to see, and would create the need for more electric light for reading. I hope you can find a light color you love. Anyway, Malcolm already got to do a dark room with bookcases.

1. I think you should paint the library a medium shade of sage green; 2. You need a mirror in the new bathroom; and 3. A tablecloth is a really easy way to cover scratches on your table. Those are just my opinions. 😊

With so much gorgeous natural light coming in from all sides into the library, I'd suggest a soft, calming blue such as Sherwin Williams "Upward". With the white trim and warmer honey, tan, and reds in the book bindings... it would be a beautiful palette.

Sugar soap - for those like me who wanted to know more about it: “Many brands of sugar soap are freely available for domestic use in the UK, being commonly sold for preparing surfaces for redecoration, stripping certain types of wallpaper, removing accumulations of grease in kitchens or removal of tar deposits caused by tobacco-smoking; products are supplied in powder to be diluted before use or liquid form to be brushed or sprayed.”

To clean the soot off the bricks in my chimney I sed a hand held propane tank torce to the muck until it burned off and turned to ash. The bricks should not be compromised in the process. after they have cooled such as an hour get a sponge and sponge them down with plain water. They should look much better.

If you do paint the library red, perhaps you should coat it with a glaze with hints of gold and then wipe it down so it has a lighter hue to it - possibly even pink-ish so that it isn't overwhelmingly dark and red.

As another mentioned “Wedgwood blue”. Yes. That’s my definition of “French blue”. Like the color of Wedgewood blue jasperware. It's interesting that you ask viewers about rooms. I think the library woodwork and bookcases are fine in cream. In fact, I wouldn't think the library actually needed paint any time soon. But a wall color of sage or pale ocher would be good. You've got enough dark rooms. Considering that you already have various brown tones in the furniture, the walls of the library will be pleasant in harmonizing pastels. Plus, a dark library is pretty standard and a light one is more unique. (PS - there's enough to do without rethinking the entire library!)

Julie, your enthusiasm never seems to wane! Perhaps there's something to the green "nasty"drink after all! Please don't go red, or dark in the library, it's such a beautiful room, and "light" is essential. It should be a calm restful room, if it is to be a room where people can sit and read. I have always used Brazil Nut for removing scratches. It has a smoother texture than Walnut, so it is less likely to add to the damage. I've also found that you can add a little more pressure, which seems to cause the dents associated with scratches to swell, making it smoother. Afterwards, I use a polish with a high beeswax content, though these can be fiddly. Too much on the duster or left on the surface too long, makes it really difficult to polish up. The results, though, have always been excellent. Light scratches disappear, deep ones are made less noticeable. I love that you are not replacing curtains. All of my windows have shutters, partly to improve my asthma, but also because I prefer the less fussy look. When deciding upon the library colour, I'd decide when the room was to be used. If a daytime room it needs to be light. If it's for the evening, then dark. I love a red room in the evening.

What color to paint the library? I think a rich deep forest green would be splendid if you want to go dark. The work looks wonderful, and oh, I do take D3 K2 combo and being a Hashimoto’s and now cardiac 3 mildly regurgitating heart valves at 56 this is important to keep the calcium in my bones and not in the tissues and not in my carrotid artery’s and the two are a power combo. I still keep active and ride my bike. Getting back to the bathroom, nice work! Its not easy in a great house such as Mapperton. Time to winterize the place as cold dry weather with snow is looming in our future where I live in Saratoga county NY. I love watching your channels. Luke is right to use Walnuts to fix the finish on the table! It does work to a degree, however a french polish would work better for very old wood! Those scratches are pretty deep. Consult a conservitor in the area so as to not damage the surface any further. Great work.

Dark would be spectacular, something like Farrow & Ball’s Hague Blue. Keep the ceiling light so it doesn’t feel like a cave. But you have plenty of windows to balance the darkness. Also, walnut shells have been used forever as a textile dye. So it makes sense that it would work as a gouge-filler. It’s probably far better on an antique than the petroleum-based wax crayons that are sold today.

I don’t know if it’s available in the UK, but there is a product in the US called (now wait for it) Old English Scratch Cover. We had felt-backed dining table pads, additional pads for each of the three leaves, for our mahogany dining table to protect the surface. Never a scratch nor water ring from my great-grandfather's day to mine. And our tablecloths were sorted by length, depending on how many leaves we were using. As a child, hard to keep straight which cloth to use - size, color, style/formality - when setting for a dinner but our table was always beautiful, never scratched or faded. The original color on your rarely used leaf is the right color when you refinish the table. But do get the custom pads & tablecloths. Your table will remain perfect for further generations.
