When it comes to upgrading bed linens remember that two "pattern" flat sheets can be sewn together to make a duvet cover which can give you greater choice than having to buy a complete set. And bed pillows can be made from solid color flat sheets that complement. It is less hassle at redecorating than having to repaint. Get the flat sheets at bed linen shops that allow you to select what you want in making up a set or even try finding them at charity thrift shops. That way your pillow covers do not start to look tired as compared to the fitted or flat sheet used on the bed.

Is it possible to leave the passion flower on the edge of the patio and create a structure there that it can grow up? It'd be a shame to lose all of it. It's so pretty. Or pull up some of the bricks and replant it somewhere else?

Pruning the plant is necessary every year to keep control of it and for it to remain healthy. Most of America does not have the damp weather as the UK, or wood worm rot, and the age of the buildings. It's hard to understand, plants grow back and cost is low, but building maintenance and materials is always costly. You are on a budget to restore and also to use the building as an income. Great job. You are making history for your family.

Julie, you are the embodiment of something Lady Colin Campbell said on her channel namely that the aristocrats are sensible men, who marry beautiful and CAPABLE WOMEN who can help them to manage and care for their inheritance of real property. I love to see when you reveal how past generations care for things like the swimming pool. You fit so well into your adopted country. From Jamaican in New York, USA.

It looked more like shearing a sheep! A question about the Passion vine. We have the vines in Hawaii and welcome them for their Passion Fruit that we call Lilikoi. It makes a wonderful juice and a concentrate that is used to make other delights. We put it in our iced tea and make smoothies. Does your Passion Vine make the fruit? If so, you really want to get those and juice them. You can freeze the pulpy concentrate to pull out and use through the year.

Oh how exciting. I love that kind of shopping. Another idea, I have a small collection of Scottish Shortbread tins I have picked up here and there. I use them for containers for stuff, mostly the longer tin for pencils, etc. They are Scottish themed and bright and portray historical legends. a burst of fun. I either display them in a glass fronted cabinet or in drawers to hold my stuff. A little bit of festive, I can hear the bagpipes when I look at them. That is a clever prop for the doorway until the brick is moved and the doorway secure. Sewing class tip; When you join any two items like sheets or other stuff and don't want the seam in the middle, you use one entire sheet in the middle section, and cut the 2nd one to size on either side of the middle. That makes it smooth in the middle and its a better support for the item on the sides as well. The middle of a piece of fabric can get a lot of seam stress on it and it shows more. That word pun was accidental, sorry. 🙂Or you can get fancy and create a wide border all around with a contrasting fabric. The vines growing outside the cottage are quite wooly on there, aren't they? Growing like gangbusters. Be careful of wasps, I got stung once getting too close to a passionflower vine once. The wasp was so quick I barely saw it but it did sting. I survived. 🙂 They may have a nest in there somewhere. Memories....if you had a stone fence or something the vines could grow all over, I would prune them back and transplant them to an area they can really expand in. Cuz they grow pretty quickly and you will have to monitor it if you leave it there.....and a stone fence covered with honeysuckle or passion flower vines would be lovely and even winter garden interest with the vines. Just an idea. The image of the vine/leaf covered cottage reminds me of the musical Hair. lol. oh dear.

Julie, this episode was particularly exciting for me, as I'm doing something similar at the other end of the world, in New Zealand. I'm not as young or as energetic as you, but I'm loving doing it myself. Your followers always have terrific tips to save £££, so I thought I'd add some. I've stripped & oiled lots of wooden, beaten up furniture we thought wouldn't make it, but they've turned out just gorgeous. I'm using a locally made tung oil, which is heatproof, waterproof, brings up the grain beautifully & best of all, doesn't yellow. My latest TV watching activity is knitting mats & dish cloths made from old t-shirts cut into yarn & knitted on big needles. I want to weave a floor rug next. Happy renno-ing, Julie & Luke & everyone on the job at Mapperton Live

I think you will have to take all the vines down, Julie. At Manjushri, we found the vines had grown right thru the walls into the bedrooms. One of the roots was almost 20 feet long! They just destroyed the brickwork. and the leaks they caused destroyed the front-facing wall. They all had to be cut back in order to repair and restore. Sad, but necessary. If you cut back, but keep a low bush on either side of the doorway, they will quickly grow back in just a few years, but your underlying wall will then be healthy and safe. Ivy is beautiful, but really destructive to the bricks/stones and mortar. I'm so sorry. I love that vine-covered cottage look too.

You know all those elegant portraits you have all over the main house? I think that shot of you in your red jumper standing on top of that small pile of rubble, with your right foot on top of an old brick just like the Virgin Mary steps on the snake in classical art, and you are holding onto those support pipes-with the sledge hammer hanging from your left hand - that would make the best portrait of the American Viscountess of Mapperton in her true element! You look wonderful! Its you! A single shot that's really you! Take that! all you sparkly, black cocktail dresses! A woman of substance, indeed!

Roots and tendrils of climbing plants will penetrate the surface of buildings, leaving the stone, brick, stucco (or other) damaged. Then moisture gains entry into the topmost layers. Freeze-thaw cycles cause cracking and spalling and the cycle continues. Not good for historic properties as charming as it may look : (

The cottage looks great! I love vines, but they are so difficult to manage.

Love the clothes!! The solid blue shirt would look fantastic under the plaid shirt. Tuck in the solid shirt and leave the plaid one open, almost like a jacket. Cardigan is so cute!!
