What made the light bulb go on for either your little reader or for you teaching your little reader?

My kindergartener is doing level 1. We struggled at first with blending...she could do each letter well but putting them together took a bit to get. She is loving it though. She is always so proud when she reads a new story! I also am happy as a momma because AAR makes it so easy for me. I feel really empowered to help her learn with this program.

My 8 yr old (3rd grader) tested into lvl 2. She could barely read blends and no long vowels or special sounds she struggled so much. As soon as we started AAR she has progressed so much! The syllable hints really helped her.

I have to be honest, I'm learning so much. I had no idea there were all of these rules for syllables. Homeschooling is seriously making me smarter.

I didn’t either! First time I encountered open/closed I was like what is this?? She’s only made it to lesson 10 but she feels so smart and is doing so well. It went from a fight to a smile. And I didn’t know if it was going to be worth the money and hype but it really is. She had tried 3 other programs.

We love AAR and I currently have a 2nd grader using level 2 for review and confidence building, and my Kindergartener is about to start level 1.

My second-grader who is a struggling reader is using AAR level 2 this year. We are going at a pretty quick pace because it is review of the phonics she was presented (not in a way that made any sense or that could help her learn them- mind you) last year in her online charter school. A suggestion for what to do after AAR 4, I know you like MOSDOS, but check out Lightning Literature. I haven’t used it yet (I’m waiting for my 4th grader to get through AAR level 4 first- she reads great, but I’m going back to cover any gaps in her public school education and she’s enjoying it as she flies through it ), but I plan on using it 2nd semester. In Lightning Lit the student read novels starting at level 3. The first several are very thin like “Sarah Plain and Tall” and “The Rickshaw Girl”. It’s completely secular and includes grammar (even sentence diagraming) and writing.

I will have to look at that! I'm also interested in the Michael Clay Thompson programs.

We are doing the All About Reading level 1 but I’ve paused for a few days. I felt like she was memorizing the stories and the review card stack was huuuge! So we’ve been concentrating on the review cards. It’s hard to keep it interesting but I’m trying. I need to remember to stick with just 20 minutes a day.

Have you tried some of the review games from the appendix? We try to keep the review stack small or break it up to about 10 cards. Sometimes I'll lay them out and ask for the word and she has to find it. Her big sister also loves to help review with her.

Yes. We’ve tried some of the games. That helps. The hop scotch one was good! She seems to be sounding them out much better in the past few days.

Pausing the new lessons is a great way to keep working but allow everyone to go more at their own pace. You're just allowing for mastery, which is never bad.

Do you think this program is on par with school grade levels? My 5th grader really struggles with reading and spelling. Do they have placement tests? Thanks so much!

I can't speak to grade level, since we don't have public school experience. I can tell you that I have never felt she's behind her peers or cousins. They do have placement tests available here www.allaboutlearningpress.com/placement/
