Hi. Congratulations. How is cloth diapering going so far? Did you use the regular sized diapers for when your baby was a newborn?

I nannied for a family who did cloth diapers for their 2.5 year old. It really wasn’t bad and usually they would have me use a disposable diaper on occasion (long outing, long nap). I would also wash and hang dry them. I’m sure even decreasing the amount of diapers by a large amount still made a big environmental impact! It felt really realistic to me and I’d love to try cloth with my own babies some day.

First baby coming in July and I’ve been excited for cloth diaper for years! I bought the Disana tie nappies, the wool covers, and will probably get a few of the soaker pants bc so cute! I love and have been obsessed with wool for a long time, so I didn’t need much convincing once I realized wool diaper covers were a thing! Currently also have a wool mattress, wool pregnancy pillow, wool duvet insert, and wool nursing pads and I love of all them!

I cloth diapered starting at 4 weeks through six months, and did disposable at night! I saved HUNDREDS of not thousands of dollars. Planning to cloth diaper all the way through potty training with my next baby!!

Thank you for bringing awareness to cloth diapering and the environmental benefits! My mom used cloth (it was the 90s so she was using full on metal diaper pins) so I thought I would see more people doing it, but I’ve been nannying for 10 years and only like two people have used cloth. It’s definitely something I feel passionate about doing with my own kids when the time comes.

@ewe392 I'm glad you did! I hope it works out for you. If you find that style doesn't work out for you, if you are using this style of tie diaper, then you can give the other styles of covers a try. I now simply make them myself with a free pdf pattern I found online.

Thank you for sharing the cloth diaper love! I haven’t seen this in the comments yet: please please please don’t flush bamboo liners down the toilet! They take more time to break down than to reach the water filtration facilities and clog them up like crazy. This applies to any type of face/butt wipe and brown paper. The only solid things that should go in toilets are toilet paper, paper tissues and tampons (and even that’s debatable).

I used cloth with both my boys and loved it. I used the AIO's for when they had to do daycare. Otherwise I mostly used cottonese or regular cotton prefolds with either Thirsties covers or the wool longies. I also had a couple of thick fleece toppers that were great. I too used the bamboo liners for when they were older. My husband and I both loved cloth diapering. I remember telling people at my baby shower that I was planning to cloth diaper and my MIL thought I was batshit and was kind of like, "yeah, we'll see how that goes". Anyhow when she offered to watch my first, 3 days a week while I was working, she had to use them and really got to see how easy it was and to her surprise she thought it was so easy and was so impressed with how my boys never really got a diaper rash. To this day she will always tell people how her son and daughter in law used cloth and how wonderful it was. I do agree that cloth diapering can save so much money, however I will say that during my cloth diapering years there was a brand called "Good Mama" which were so cute and they had so many prints. They became all the rage and I did fall prey to that for a bit. They would come out with a coveted limited edition print and they would literally resell for up to $70 for one diaper and they didn't include the covers. Though I did once try to add up what I spent between all the cloth I bought for my 2 boys during the whole diapering journey and I came up with around $3000 and once my youngest was potty trained I was able to make $1400 back from selling them on FB Marketplace.

Pregnant with my second and looking forward to getting back to cloth. We clothed my first most of his first year before we moved in with my parents and almost all our belongings went in storage. So we made the choice to do disposables until we had our own house again. I was so passionate about cloth and your video reignited it for sure. Also, I love seeing the other options I never knew existed with the tie cloth nappies and the wool info! We definitely had issues with leaking and with diaper rash with the all in ones. I also hated that it was plastic that’s end of life was still a landfill. Anyways, loved your video and I appreciate you sharing! Xoxo

I did read a "study" about cloth & disposables being equal. I wonder of its the one that man had read. The "study" really just focused on the laundry and water usage but failed to mention how much water it takes to make 1 disposable and most importantly, this "study" was done by a big disposable diaper company!

Currently renting and don’t have a washer or dryer. We actually got one of those small washing machines on Amazon with a spin section for “drying” and while it’s a pain in the ass it is do-able. I wash diapers every other day from Sunday-Wednesday and then when I go to my parents house on Saturdays I wash the diapers used from Wednesday-Saturday. I always have some disposables on hand just in case I can’t get to the laundry or they don’t dry in time

For a newborn, I really like using flat cotton diaper, by folding it you can put it tightly enough around little babys tiny legs. And woolen nappy pants on the top. When my baby got bigger and flats didnt work out anymore (because of moving and larger amounts of pee) I have used those flats inside of pocket diapers.
@almaklintwohlfahrt788

I plan on doing this for my future baby. Which size flat diaper did you use for newborns and how many did you buy?. And did you buy different sizes of flat diaper when your baby got older to put in a pocket diaper?. And the last question is which flat diaper is your favorite?. I hope you don’t mind me asking questions.

@@almaklintwohlfahrt788 not at all :) and well, I used old flat diapers from our older children (which was used to wipe pukes etc) and from my (and my siblings') childhood from the 90's so I didnt really have the best ones. If I would by new ones, I would by little bit bigger, for example 80cm x 80cm, organic cotton if possible. And definitely a square shape. I have approximately 20-25 flats (just guessing, didnt count). I use the same ones in pocket diapers.

We used reusable wipes from day 1 and they're SO good that when I used a disposable wipe for the first time I was like "HOW ON EARTH DOES ANYONE USE THESE?!!?!" Also love the natural fiber cloth diaper setup. We use wool covers and cotton prefolds and I couldn't be happier. The plastic ones just don't hold up like the natural fiber. We also do elimination communication so catch a lot of poops and pees in the potty which is amazing because it means less soiled diapers, less use, less water, etc. We did disposables the first month because our newborn was too small so totally agree with that. I would do a stretchy flat or newborn flat and wool for newborn for the next baby.

I just had a baby and began cloth diapering at 3 weeks. I figured we'd give ourselves the first month + to do disposable, but it really hasn't been as hard as I thought! Cloth diaper laundry is much less work than regular laundry. I have noticed that they keep the moisture in, so I may try the wool soakers for nights!

Hi 👋🏼 first time mom here who also Tia cloth diapering, I can tell you my experience maybe it helps you decide how many to buy. So my situation is as follows: Live in a country where I can afford to buy at cheap prices all types of cloth diapers from the disana knit diapers to prefolds, prefits, all in ones and prefits. Have my own laundry machine and dryer in my flat Don’t have any of the grandparents or family from either husband’s or mine living in the country we live in. Had an emergency c section at 8 months pregnant Baby is very big ( mini giant) Stayed in the hospital for over a week after baby was born Partner is helpful but had to work most of the time My baby is extremely fussy. I habe 4 months maternity leave and I am mostly an indoors person who never goes out. So with all the above information this was my experience : 1. Baby outgrew most of the all in ones and prefitted Nappies by the time I got home, most of these were size smalls. The other bigger sizes of the all in ones were just bulky and looked weird on my baby even though he’s a big sized baby. 2. Doing laundry was difficult and since I have no help with the baby from family etc.. I was exhausted all the time having a very demanding baby who wouldn’t sleep at all! My partner has to work.. due to this I didn’t bother with the cloth diapers, was easier just sticking to the disposables. All I wanted to do was to sleep, ALL THE TIME!!! 3. I started trying my best to use the cloth diapers again after a month or so, from my experience it’s just easier to use a prefold wrapped around the baby, secure it with pins and throw on a wool cover, the disana knitted ones also work pretty well with a thin insert in it, a bit bulky when baby is one month but still good. Just remember to use a bigger size onesie else you might no be able to close the snaps at the bottom. Another one I love also is to fold a flat diaper into a triangle, lay an absorbent insert in and wrap it around baby then secure with snaps. 4. Washing… it’s way easier washing the disana knits (never gets stained cos of the inserts) and the flats folded in triangle.. I sometimes even hand wash them. Even the prefolds are also okay really. The all in ones I totally hated during laundry, takes forever to wash and dry and still some come out with bits of poop stains here and there and you have to rewash. 4. At the moment I do cloth diapering during the day at disposable at night. 5. My baby is a heavy wetter but the diapering system I described above works well, never had leaks especially with wool overpants specifically the disana wool overpants. 6. Because I’m home most of the time until my maternity leave is over, I get to change my baby’s diaper whenever I want. Honestly I just feel him from time to time and decide if he’s too wet to be changed, I don’t have issues with diaper rash but I try to stick to a maximum of two hours before changing him. I breastfeed and therefore the poop is just liquid and already my baby has a routine where he mostly poops in the early morning hours. There isn’t a lot of poop in the afternoon diaper just some streaks of it here and there. 7. I will say because of the above point, I use up to say 7 diapers between 6am and 6pm (going by the two hour changing schedule) 8. If your situation is anytime like mine and you want to do my routine of cloth diaper at day and disposal at night, I’d say a total of 30 diapers should be more than enough assuming you do laundry every other day. Times you’re too exhausted to do so, you’d still have a day’s supply of diapers… what I’m trying to say is with only daytime cloth diapering, you can go about 3 of not doing laundry before you run out of diapers. 9. If you want to do hardcore cloth diapering both day and night, then you’d need additional 5 diapers per day and if you plan to have a 3 day supply before doing laundry then get about 45 diapers. 10. You can decide how many diapers you want based on the above descriptions. Whether you have help at home, if you have your own laundry machine at home, how often you want to wash, if you’re hand washing or using the laundry machine. I like to laundry every other day so my diapers don’t stink but also so I have a good amount of load to go into the washer. I use cloth wipes also by the way ( best thing ever, contribute to my baby not having diaper rash) so I accumulate a fair amount of “diaper load” to clean. 10. Please by all means don’t get 50 of one type of diapers, try out samples from different brands and systems, for example get about 10 or so prefolds size newborn, another 10 prefold bigger size, , 10 flats, 10 disana knitted diapers with ties, 5 all in ones and 5 pre fitted ones if you’re aiming for 50. Keep in mind that it is only the flats and the disana knitted diapers that baby can use no matter how big they get, those grow with baby until potty training. All the others types you might have to rebuy bigger sizes as baby grows. 11. Most importantly if you’re on a budget or don’t want to waste money on something you just might end up not using, cut down on the quantity above. Go for 5 of each or any lower number range that’s still affordable for you. Yes, you will be busy once baby comes but there will be lots of time to buy more diapers if needed even after baby is born so don’t rush to make a big stash right from the start! Luckily for me, I live in a place with a great online marketplace where I can buy and resell stuff. I bought all types of diaper systems for really cheap (some even free) and I’m reselling what I don’t think I’d use. 12. Invest in a good and absorbent insert if you are doing this cloth diapering thing. For me so far I use inserts made from about 6 layers of birdeye fabric, it’s very trim and does a great job. I am yet to try the fancy bamboo/hemp inserts but what I can say is that something like the bamboo gets hard and uncomfortable on baby’s delicate skin after a while if you don’t wash it right. I hope this helps, i wish you all the best with your pregnancies and motherhood, it isn’t easy, it’s lots of ups and downs but you can do it you all lovely mamas. You’re doing a great job raising the next generation of humans, know that your efforts and jobs are the most important in the world. Without mothers to have babies there will be no supply of human resource in the future. …..

I forgot to add, flats (napkins) are dual purpose. You can use them as burp clothes, towels etc so by all means go all out when spending on those, get at least 20 of those. They are daily cheap as well. Get 10 made from Muslin and 20 from birdseye fabric. Those you can put to other uses even if you later decide you don’t want to use them as diapers

Love this! We mostly cloth diaper our almost 2 year old. But this video may have just helped us with the missing pieces to fully cloth diaper the next one (hopefully coming next year)! We use pocket diapers and I tried to load them up with inserts and use them overnight but she got a yeast infection from the moisture. I figure one a day is still pretty good! But I will say, as she’s getting older I usually put her in a disposable when we go out cause lugging that stinky poop around in a wet bag can be a lot. However! The bamboo liners may be enough to flush that roadblock away!

We cloth diapered not for environmental reason (the u.s military is the largest polluter. So I hate that argument, maybe let’s not hold children’s bowel movements in regards to pollution) BUT we did cloth because I loved the intentionality of it, the connection babies make with their body, the can actually feel being wet, we did EC because of this. I loved cloth, it’s such a sweet experienced. Need to get back into it but it’s def a labor of love❤

How often do you change diapers with cloth dispersing? With my last baby, it was an average of 8 changes per 24hr period (when newborn) so I’m wondering just how many cloth diapers/inserts you would need to accommodate that or if it’s different with cloth?

I think the amount of waste produced by using cloth is way less signifcant than the amount with disposables. I will say that modern cloth diapers dont have the lifespan that flats and covers used to have. I pulled my used diapers out of storage and some were already getting crunchy/relaxed elastics. I love the idea of cloth and they were nice, but we have made the decision to move away from them. I got pregnant again when my first is still in diapers and i knew i wouldnt be able to keep up and i was very much right lol. So with 2 in diapers I realize I cant handle more on my plate so cloth was the extra chore/task that had go go for my mental health and help me stay on top of the rest of our life.
