My friend is doing this with her baby. They started EC when he was only a couple days old and I will never forget seeing a tiny newborn being held over the toilet and going pee and poo!! I love that it doesn’t have to be all or nothing, it’s just creating the communication/connection. No being naturally wants to soil themselves

This is awesome! I imagine that since the 1950’s, in addition to increased use of disposable diapers, changes in childcare dynamics are also associated with delayed potty training .

I really like your honesty. I am not familiar with your parenting style but thank you for sharing and being so transparent. This is good information for myself who is a childcare provider and is transitioning from a 4/5 yr old peeing in n the potty but not #2. He is mostly at home and X2 at my house. He does have more attention with me but a super excellent family life ( just a lot of extra siblings). Would love some advice for encouraging #2 independently.

A lot of things we do here in the west, especially with child rearing is weird. I love the idea of EC and love seeing other’s experiences with it, makes me excited to use it in the future. Also, really looking forward to the cloth diaper video. I’ve been on the market searching for the right fit, so I can wait to see what you’ve found!

Go Bekah go! I love EC, my 1 year old poos in the toilet 95% of the time, and she has never had a diaper rash. She loves it! She also pees every time we take her to the toilet and often has dry diapers! When we change her diaper, we always take her to the toilet first. We started taking her to the toilet at 12 days old. Not sure how people do it with boys but I know people do it!

hi Bekah, as someone who has worked in childcare for over a decade and now in social services I have a lot of education and experience with elimination communication. while it does help teach children how to use the toilet and is effective at doing so, there is a ton of research now that it can led to chronic constipation. while I don’t agree with many forms of “potty/toilet training” I have seen the most health risks with EC. i’m not trying to bash your parenting as you are clearly educated on a lot of parenting styles but I would look into the research on it. I prefer RIE’s method of following the child’s lead, this can be uncomfortable for parents who want (feel pressure) to adhere a timeline but teaching children to trust their body and what is happening is most important and part of that is them feeling when they pee and poop in their diaper. anyways if you want more resources on this i definitely recommend janet lansbury

“A child younger than 12 months of age has no control over bladder or bowel movements, and very little control between 12 to 18 months. Most children are unable to obtain bowel and bladder control until 24 to 30 months. The average age of toilet training is 27 months. It’s important to understand that Elimination Communication is just tracking body patterns and putting an infant on a "potty" - but they are not learning or mastering skills. In order to be independent in toileting and bowel and bladder control, children must be able to have good sphincter control, maintain upright sitting on a potty or toilet on their own and understand the association between urge sensation and being able to independently act on it. In my opinion there are no benefits to EC, it does not support typical child development and there can be more drawbacks for the child long term than most people stop to consider” -Pediatric Occupational Therapist Quiara Smith

Diapers are human invention. They have not existed since the beginning of humans. We are not biologically designed to soil ourselves in a diaper nor is any species. Do you not find it odd that diapers are apparently such an important part of development? We were never designed to wear them to begin with. Genuinely curious.

I‘ve done it with both my daughters, also because I could not stand the thought of their poo going everywhere and how uncomfortable that must be. EC makes so much sense, once I learned about it I could not believe how an entire Western society has forgotten about the natural ways of caring for newborns. Disposable diapers habe been around for how long, 70 years? In large parts of Asia, they are only used by families who can afford them and are sort of a luxury thing to have. My kids made specific noises from day 1 and showed signs of being uncomfortable when they had to poop. It’s mindblowing once you get into it 😁 people look at me like I‘m crazy when they see me do it here in Germany

I did this with my baby! My mom had done it with my siblings and got me into it. I did it a little when he was tiny (held him over our toilet) but really got into it when he was 7 months and covid started. I since I wasn’t going anywhere pretty easy to commit and get into a routine. By a year he never really pooped in a diaper, and he was in underwear during all awake time at 25 months. I loved not dealing with poopy diapers and using less diapers in general!

We started EC when my baby was 2 weeks old and my now-15 month old is 90% potty trained and wears underwear all day. Hands down my favorite thing I did as a parent. I can't even imagine how much we have saved on diapers! And I feel like it really helped me tune in with my daughter. We're expecting #2 in March and while there are a lot of things I will do differently, EC is not one of them!

You make a good point but please don’t use this “poor Africa” rhetoric to drive home your point. It is heavily laden with stereotypes and Africa is so much more diverse than that. Maybe reference to however potty training was done in your culture in whatever century before diapers became a thing.

I have a baby bath that sits on a stand. I put the potty into it and use it for EC. It’s easy on my back because there’s no stooping over and I stack towels behind him in the bath to make a comfy potty seat. He loves it and smiles and giggles as he goes.

I work at a daycare and it blows my mind that the average child is potty trained at age 3 1/2. So many people say my child isn’t showing signs of readiness. But it is my firm belief as a mother of three and a 3K teacher, that if you put a child in a diaper they will use the diaper. You just have to “eliminate” it and they will learn! I realize this is not potty training I’m just saying that kids “get it” much easier or more instinctively than some people give them credit for.
@dazeofnostalgia8 ай бұрын
We have to consider that most daycares aren’t able to do this/ don’t want to start potty training until the child hits two years old. A lot of standard daycares wouldn’t let parents do this method and parents have to do disposable diapers. I would love to hear from parents who are full time working and having to rely on childcare who are following this method. My husband and I both work full time and plan to hire a nanny/babysitter due to knowing we want to do things differently. Most of the daycares we have looked at wouldn’t support the ideas/methods we want to do with our baby like this.

I'm sure another reason people did this more before the 1950s or 60s was back when ab0rti0n was illegal and birth control was more inaccessible/less reliable, people were having more babies and having them closer together, so combine that with water limitations and the time it takes to wash diapers, they also had a lot more diapers than an average person would today, so it totally makes sense for them to want to find more efficient/realistic ways to manage things.

My only child was born in 1975 using the all natural LaMaze method. You are right, I was married and common practice for just the husband to work. We couldn't afford the Pampers, a new thing for USA. I used cloth, very stinky, rinse in toilet, washing all the time, stay at home mom, so I decided to start sitting him on a potty chair with a tray on it from time to time all day. I changed him the minute he peed or pooed. He almost always had a clean diaper on so it was simple when he turned one we got him a big boy toddler bed and underoos, and night underwear to use all day. He was totally potty trained by 18 mo because he would tell me in signs if he wet or pooed because it was uncomfortable for him he'd ask me to change him. It just naturally happened. Now I hear of 6 yr olds in diapers, that seems so lazy.

My baby never wanted to poop in his diaper, we always had to hold him over a potty to get the poop out haha. Unfortunately that changed when he got older and went to daycare he got used to using his diaper and now it’s hard to convince him to use the potty instead. Don’t listen to all the dumb people on the internet Bekah and don’t use your precious time to reply to their ignorance.

Doing it this way, Holding them over a pot seems more natural., And I do believe that they don't want that stuff all over them either.. They would be done Patty training by the time. They are a year and a 1/2 old. And I think that's great.. You keep ongoing, girl.. And let me know of any other clever claver things you come up with.. God bless. Teresa. From Jackson, Michigan.
