How We Will Build Houses On Mars! We have a good idea of how we will get to Mars, but once we get there.. how will we colonize Mars, and build houses and infrastructure? What is Mars base alpha going to look like, how will we sleep on Mars, and what will a Mars house look like?

I always thought lava tubes would be the Ideal habitat. A robot could spray a polymer on the inside of the tube to seal and stabilize it then cap the ends with polymer. Or just inflate habitats in it. If you want less protected structures on the surface they could be built next. At least you would have an extremely safe structure to go to in the event of a massive CME from the sun or severe storms on the surface.

I would definitely prefer to live in balloon caves. But the inflatable habitats should be built by Bigelow Aerospace. It is the only company that have gone through actual space testing of their inflatable habitats. And they provide super protection from the dangers of outer space. Let alone martian surface. Add a printable outer 'solid rock' shell and you have very safe place for humans to live.

Melting Regolith takes a lot of energy, so if this is powered by a solar farm, it will take years for robots to build a single cupola. This might be okay, but it is not fast. Better find a natural cave or lavatube. Did the numbers: 1 kg of lava at 950C contains 795kJ. Sun's intensity on Mars is almost half that of on Earth. So an on Earth 10kW installed power solar farm, will produce 30kWh per day. that is 135 kg artificial lava per day or 44L. This means that only one of the strips laid down by the robots in the video will be possible per day. So this is definitely going to require nuclear power.

There need to be interconnecting tunnels between every habitat. You don't want to don a space suit to pop next door for a cuppa. Having a circular tunnel with carriages belting round on tracks could provide 1g artificial gravity to enable returning to Earth after a long stay. 3d printing wall panels and arches would be possible, with additional layers on top to keep the dust out.

G'day, Well Pilgrim, no ACTUAL Scientists are in any position to suggest what a day in the life of "an average Martian Colon-ist", because the last time Humans attempted to build a Biosphere within which all Air, Water, and Food was contained and fully recycled..., in the 1990s "Biosphere -2" Experiment, it took less than 12 hours after being sealed-in that Oxyen levels had dropped by 30% and an Emergfncy Convoy of Trucks of Liquid Oxygen had to be set up... Because no allowance had been made for the Oxygen consumption of the Soil Bacteria. So they replaced all the good Topsoil with almost sterile Sand from the Desert, and the crew (of 10 or 12, if I recall correctly) were able to just barely stay alive and supply themselves with Food and Water and breathable Air. But they had lots of interpersonal drama and dominance dynamics shitfights, I think one or two of the Crew mutinied and quit early. After a year they all gave up. The Rocket Nerds and Space Cadets are reluctant to admit it, but no Ecologist or Biologist or Doctor or Nurse has any faintest Clue as to how any of the Elonites expect to "live on Mars". The whole project is as unachievable as Hyperloops, or Electric Semi-Trailers carrying Emissions-free Freight. Such is life, in Reality. Stay safe. ;-p Ciao !

@@WarblesOnALot Well aren't we the cynical one. None of the problems you outlined are unsolvable. For starters 'Biosphere -2 Experiment was an experiment to identify what kinds of problems might arise. It unjustifiably got bad press and external management issues arose later in the project. Unsurprisingly, Steve (scumbag) Bannon the fraud and conman was involved with some of the financial management failures. Yes, they did have some technical problems, and interrelationship problems between the crew of 'Biospherians', but that's what experiments are meant to reveal. The fact is, some very useful science did come out of the project, and continues to do so to this day under the management of the University of Arizona. I suggest you read the wikipedia page for the facts.

Heres my idea, Using area size inflatable plastics bags, form a sealed envelope. Next put 4 inches of spray foam over it for structure, airtightness, and insulation. Then bury it under 1.5 feet of soil, Use 2 doors, opposite ends, for safety. One end connected as a hallway between a row of shelters, The other having a airlock to out side. Air proof doors everywhere practical. Having multiple shelters insures redundancy if there is a failure. Next start building agricultural shelters. Shelters with LED lights and shelves for growing plants for food and for oxygen production. The explorers need work. Agriculture and Building shelters and discovery should be their occupation. In future time, native iron and silicon will give way to steel and glass production. Nuclear power plants will be necessary to accomplish all this. Then cities of iron and glass should proliferate. The moon becomes a first stop to Mars, Mars the future gate way to deep space. An outer-space economy developes.

The concept of the bubble type habitat is the best approach, especially if the material is graphene. It gas all the properties required for such strength to weight factors. With the ability to not be affected by any type of of ionizing radiation, and can be used to create photovoltaic power generation. Plus it is clear so there can be the psychological aspect of freedom as outdoors on Earth. One of the best resources for creating graphene is recycled polystyrene. So if Elon Musk considers it, there could be a reason to recycle all the polystyrene plastics currently filling solid waste dumps. A win-win. Another lightweight exceptionally strong material is artificial spider silk, which could be used in many applications including being an additional layered support in a bubble enclosure together, such layers easily contain a suitable pressurized atmosphere, thereby relieving the human population of using biological waste for anything other than creating a nitrogenous base for agriculture and the separation of urine to base components including pure water and urea, a basic component of very strong adhesives..

pee forms part of the water cycle for the survivors on mars. Can't use it to make mud castles and make water from it at the same time. Also the amount of "soil" on mars is a good question, since much of the surface looks like a bed of fractured lava rock with a thin, wind-swept, upper layer of sand. I surmise that if you cannot find dunes, collecting enough sand to make mud castles will be a serious problem.

Send up a couple of tunneling machines like the ones used to create the Chaannel Tunnel, the stuff that gets dug out caan be sorted to extract the materials that are useful and the rest of the rock and dirt can be mixed with Epoxy Resin to create a kind of Marscrete that will be formed into the tunnel liners. Then just make the machines do large concentric donuts undergruond and the humans can then use smaller mining machines to dig out the rooms between the tunnels, airlocks and other such requirements can be shipped up initially but eventually the materials being dig out can be processed into raw materials for the airlocks and other stuff. Yes it's a bit vague but the whole thing will rely on getting a couple of autonomous tunneling machines to mars first before any humans get there or non autonomous ones when the first humans arrive, they can live in the starship for a few weeks while the tunnels get started and can then move into them once the first liners are in place.

Sounds like a job for Boring. Tunnel into hillside using tails for air less a create to make most of outer seal and inner everything. Take camping gear. Basically turning initial missions into Survival Hikes. People will need to be rotated to maintain Sanity.

They will have to be underground because of radiation. I think they will make use of pre existing martian tunnel systems, seal them off, and pump them with air. And slowly build cities in these vast tunnel networks, which will be connected by underground hyperloops to other underground caves and tunnel systems on the planet. They will have to use nuclear and geothermal power, and be good at drilling.

The polyurethane used in the 3d printed house shown is not even slightly radiation resistant, it would fall apart, and is not available on Mars anyways. No matter what a mars colony is going to require some extremely heavy equipment for manufacturing or tunneling, and we can't run those things autonomously yet.

All entry points must have a sophisticated quarantine and wash area to remove all dirts and the unknowns. A few damaging micro/nano organisms could cause a major outbreak in any colony that would be established on Mars.

00:01 have we? Do we know how to land Starhip on Mars? I mean the Starship which, despite the present tense in this video, does NOT have the cargo capacity of 100 mt. Or the ability to fly into orbit, let alone to Mars. It is PLANNED to have those one day. They have serious difficulties landing the empty, light, new, slow ship in our dense atmoshpere. there is no way they can land a heavy, used, crazy fast ship in the rare atmosphere on Mars. if Starship is not the new hyperloop vapour ware, it is decades in the future. IF.

I don’t know, maybe build one functioning closed loop system here on Earth before trying it millions of miles away? Since Spacex could start developing this critical component of the project today, it’s kind of curious that they haven’t.

Does the idea of blood being used as part of a building material remind anyone of Doom & Doom:Eternal? Considering it was scientists who were trying to open a portal to hell on Mars using blood magic/argent energy.

Even though that they will pressurize the buildings, there still is not enough gravity and anyone there will have bone problems as time goes by. You also would have to be mostly inside or wear pressurized suits. It would be a terrible way to live. The only way to make it earth like, is a very big job that would take a log time to complete. But it can be done,

I like the first one of your chosen options but, Elon's Boring company Boring machine adapted for the purpose could build underground facilities and the extracted dirt could be used as building materials The dome City is also good and with 1000's of starships and counting and space habitat(s) including. O'NEIL cylinder(s) for farming & agriculture etc as backup and a moon base on one of MARS moons; This being in addition Earth space Habitat(s) & Base(s)!

The 3D printing domes are clearly the winners, to build houses from pee and blood is not practical specially when pee should be recycle ♻️ for water use or fertilizer and the mushroom idea have room to improve for being more effective and esthetic

Anyway we can use Earth food to create compost? What type of trash will be generated? Will it be used or recycled? Since you brought up blood and urine Bio waste can add nutrients for vegetation. I’m sure we can do something about the smell. Also, are there any mountains we can use for security against sand storms? Factories created for mass production of food, water, clothes, etc? Will smoke harm atmosphere or help it? Thinking ahead.
