Spending extra money for convince, will cause a tighter budget. On the farm with an already tight budget it's important to weight the pros and cons. In this case the pros of convince, of having our feed mixed, made and delivered is becoming one of our farms bigger cons. The cost of everything is going us, including specialty grinding and mixing feed. I like to know what is going into our feed and in turn, into our animals. Having a consistent mix is also important to the health and well being of our farm animals. From the cows, right down to the chickens, it's important to know they are getting everything they need to stay happy and healthy. Also it's important to know that we are getting what we are paying for. The savings may not send shockwaves in the beginning, but the savings over time will defiantly be felt. We are using a Gehl 55 grinder-mixer to achieve our goals of becoming just a bit more self-sufficient. When making your own feed it's also important to know what you are putting into your feed so you know what will come out. Calculating your feeds crude protein levels is a super handy and an essential task. This gives you the values of each component added, and the over all crude protein you will be creating. Knowing what each component brings to the table, so to speak is a vital portion to helping produce something that is healthy for your farm animals. Let me help you learn how to use a grinder-mixer and calculate your feeds crude protein level.

Hello 👋 to Ontario! Yes it’s crazy. We wanted to use a different mineral than they carried a few years ago, and would have been charged an extra 30$ a bag after buying and delivering the mineral to the coop just for them to mix it in our feed. I understand they need to make money to. But grinding and mixing our own is turning out to save a little and learn a lot!
