@@Blaircraft.Engines it was the classic model. I don't have a back up plate to fine tune the balance. I ended up clocking the prop to get it as best I could. the Franklin on the Stinson required custom brackets to be fabbed. But nothing too crazy. Very pleased with the result.

How do you balance a small continental without a ring gear, or other good place to mount counterweights on the rotating mass?

The easiest way would be to use a spinner backing plate if you have one. If not, I've heard that some people have used different length prop bolts or added a plate for balance weights. If you were to add a plate, for certified you would need to confirm with the a/c manufacture first.

“ DYNAMIC” Balancing is a catchy phrase. But just because the assembly of propeller and spinners group IS in rotation isn’t dynamic balancing. It is a static balance of the rotational assembly but still only STATIC. DYNAMIC balance is a very strict engineering of the rotational mass form concept, design, materials specifications, construction and operational testing. The end product is certified to perform to ALL the forces acting counter to the device; just to keep it simple not simplistic.
