How & When to prune Limelight Hydrangeas

Pruning hydrangeas doesn't have to be confusing. Panicle hydrangeas are some of the easiest to prune and will almost always bloom for you no matter how you prune them.

Hi Ambrose, I’m a brand new gardener in zone 7b. I planted my very first hydrangea paniculata (strawberry vanilla I think it’s called)at the beginning of November. I was just wondering, because it’s only been in the ground 3 1/2 months, should I leave it this year to let it get established or prune it anyway? I’m so excited to have found your channel and to be able to garden along with you! I’ve learnt so much from you and Angie! If I can create a garden half as beautiful as yours, I’ll be very happy!

Leave it and let form a shape first so that next year you have an idea of what and what not to prune.

Last summer I purchased one it didn’t give me blooms only leaves but I was wondering it looks like there is growth coming out and I live in Texas as you know is it necessary to prawn or should I just leave it since it’s a small ????

We prune for size control in our garden. Normally you would prune only 1/3 if you don’t mind having the hydrangea grow to its mature size of 8 feet. Due to where we live, it wouldn’t be feasible to let them grow to maturity. As far as strengthening, we try to have them grow in stronger stems because of the slope and gravity pulling them down and forward.

Yours are big leaf hydrangeas. Do not prune them. "Dead" branches may appear to be dead but are alive and new growth and flower buds will grow on them. There will be a few dead branches but wait until blooming of leaves begins. If you aren't certain if a branch is dead just scratch it gently with a knife or your fingernail. If it's green beneath the bark then it's alive.

We will do a video on other hydrangeas soon. If you have a blue hydrangeas it’s preferred that you do not prune them unless you are sure that they are newer reblooming big leaf hydrangeas. Even so, they don’t require pruning at this time.
