How to Trim a Huge Limelight Hydrangea

Our Limelight has gotten huge over the years. We have cut it down before, but this year we are doing a major trim to it again to try and contain it little bit more. Panicle hydrangeas are very forgiving when it comes to trimming!

I just love starting my day with Heidi’s smiling face and that cute northern accent 😁 (I’m from Kentucky so we sound a little different haha) Having Rod there to complete the team was icing on the cake. Thanks for sharing your day ❤️❤️❤️

Good to hear “ this is Heidi and Rod”, and to watch you working together. I have 20 year old H paniculatas and usually wait for early Spring to prune, but may just go out now to prune them. They are huge and have bloomed beautifully each year. Love all of my Hydrangeas…about 15 last count.

After watching your video the other day of cutting a limelight hydrangea tree way back I tackled my hydrangea tree. I cut it back quite a ways and hope and pray it comes back next summer and looks beautiful.

Thanks Heidi for this video, it’s really helpful. I have a Vanilla Strawberry Hydrangea which has grown very tall with only “second story flowers”. The branches at the bottom have completely stopped flowering. Do you think if I prune it hard like this, it might get better and most importantly will not die?
@gardencrossings
@gardencrossings Жыл бұрын
If you trim it back you will create new branching which usually results in more flowers. I cant promise it wont die from the trimming, but I have done this hard trim 2-3 times and lighter trims many times and it is still going strong.

What is such a shame, and this is the case with almost all videos where pruning takes place, is that the result is not shown in the (late) summer when everything has grown again.

Ouch Heidi, you chopped it by half 😅….. Have a question for you, I have a tree shaped panicle hydrangea that was on my patio, it might have suffered some root rot but I think I intervened in time, still have some green on the stem and had to cut all branches. Will it start again in spring?

I have 2 limelight’s that I planted a year ago. They are proven winners and my tag says not to trim until late winter early spring. Also says they bloom on old wood. So I’m confused!!!! You said they bloom on new wood. I can’t wait for them to get that tall!
@gardencrossings
@gardencrossings Жыл бұрын
Limelight bloom on New wood/growth. We trim in the fall because that is when we have time. You can trim fall or spring. The issue with fall planting is that you may get some new growth if it is still warm out. If we do, I am not going to worry about it.
