I have never tried myself only with my tomatoes when they reach about 6 feet. You could experiment and cut one of them then compare the results? Best of luck

I’ve no problem identifying tomato suckers. The cucumbers appear to be slightly more complex. I think I’ll wait until I see a mini cucumber before snipping off the sucker. Liked & subscribed.

Hi T J good call, when they are just coming out there is a cluster of everything, if you pick too early there is a chance you pick off the cucumbers / flowers as well. I usually pick them once it is obvious what is what, usually for me when the sucker is about 1-2 inches long. Its ok if you miss them though and they get longer, just use scissors or knife to cut them. It can be suprising how many suckers I can miss one day and end up seeing them the next time I am looking at the plants. Kinda like raspberries if you have picked them...always more to find if you go back and look again. Thanks for the comment. Phil

Hi Merve, thanks for the kind words. I remove leaves that are yellowing, dead or touching the ground on both my tomatoes and cucumbers. I try to keep a balance between lots of heathy leaves but not too much as it could slow airflow and increase chances of moisture related issues. Cool that you are already that far into the growing season. My cucumbers are only about 4" tall. Best of luck.

Hi sorry for the delayed response, I have not tested this before, I have several cucumber plants that have significant secondary stem off the main, I will let it run and see. My blink tells me as long as the plant gets enough water sun and food your 2 stem 1 main would be more productive. Never thought to try on tomatoes....maybe next year. Hi, I have been very lucky and never had cucumber beetles. They look like a challenge especially when they get going. I did some research and it looks like you have several options you can look into. Non organic wise there are some insecticides (check with your local store for whats best). Other options include spraying the plants with neem oil every few days, spraying the plants with Kaolin clay (before the pests arrive) and using beetle traps that are yellow sticky paper traps. Best of luck let us know how it turns out.

Super sorry to hear about the cucumber plants. Extremly frustrating to say the least. I would consider the following options for next year. Choose resistant varieties if you can Check plants often for beetles and pick any that you find Floating row covers can be really good if having issues with your seedlings. Buy insects that will help, ladybugs (call local garden store), green lacewing or spined soldier bug, Spray kaolin clay mixed with water, this leaves a powdery coating that the bugs dont like for eating and egg-laying. Get rid of garden debris to take away the homes they live in over winter. Best of luck. Dont give up. Thats the best part there is usually another season to try again.

Hi Open Coop, good question. I leave only one cucmber to grow for two reasons. With only one cucumber left all the plants growth then goes to the one cucumber (faster growth and bigger) and further up the vine to the new parts of the plant (the next cucumbers). Similar to why I prune the new shoots to keep all the growth to the one vine vs letting the plant bush out. The other reason is if done this way I have a continual crop for a longer period of time. I dont want all of the cucumbers at once. If I was selling I might choose a different strategie but I am feeding my family so prefer to have a steady supply. I am glad you found the video simple and helpful. That is the goal of all my videos. Check them out if you are into growing food. Thanks again for question and positive comments. Phil

I have been in comercial greenhouses where one plant will be 20 plus feet long, its pretty amazing how much you can do with a single vine. Take care.

Reason is the more I looked into it the more I read that varieties can have both parthenocarpic and non-parthenocarpic traits to them and selective breeding allows for one vs the other. Hi Yvette, No not too late at all, it may seem like you are removing way too much plant but if you take it back to the main stem you will regain control. I would recommend gloves if the vines are prickly and likly scissors to cut them if they are getting on the bigger side. Dont let them climb into or on your other plants they will choke and smuther them. Hope this helps. Thanks for the question!

Hi Pradeep, I have not measured the differences in weight on the crops so am unsure on exactly how much more is produced. The numbers of cucumbers increase for sure. I would estimate 10-30% more successful finished cucumbers. The effort spend on pruning is very little even with fast growing vines. I grow about 20 plants in the bed you see and pruning all of them takes less than 5 minutes. I will prune as I am doing watering the plants so it really does not add much effort. The pruning also helps me grow the plants vertical with high density. For me totally worth it.

Hello, thank you for the tips. It's 11pm here, and I literally just ran to my garden to prune off the suckers. How big of an area will two plants take up? I've extended my trellis twice already, and it looks like I'll run out of room in a week. What happens when there's no where else for the plant to crawl to? Also, what does it mean when parts of the cucumber is bitter?

Hi Kevin. I space my plants about 8" apart, I would esimate if only two plants and pruned they would take up about 2 feet of width depending on the variety and how big the leaves grow. When there is no where else for the vine to grow it usually folds and falls over and dies. I have been in commercial cucumber greenhouses where then vines go up one wall across the roof 20 plus feet long (they will keep growing if conditions are correct). I would consider topping (cutting it off at the end) the vine and letting a sucker or two lower down turn into the new vine as it grows up the old one. Bitterness in cucumbers come from a compound in the cucumber that when concentrated becomes more bitter. Usually heat stress can cause a change in the water and levels of the bitter stuff in the cucumber. I use mulch to help with moisture retention in the soil around the roots, which helps keep it a bit cooler. Also if sun and heat are an issue where you are then consider a different spot if possible for the next go round. My hoophouse has partial shade after about 2-3 pm. Good questions. Thanks. If you are going for the tiny cornichon-sized ones is it then best to leave unpruned the places on the plant where multiple cucumbers have set?

Hi hatuxka, yes nothing wrong with that, if going more for a bunch of small cucumbers that would work well. You may find that not all of those set cucumbers finish, if that is the case as they wither then you can pull out the extras that arent going to finish. Depending on the number of plants you are growing watch that the area does not get too overgrown or it gets hard to see all the little cucmbers and pick them before they are bigger. Hi Abdul, I use an all purpose fertilizer under the plant before I plant it, then some foliar spraying (check out my other videos) and a layer of compost in the sping. Thats it. Pest control will depend on what pests I am dealing with. This year I had cutworms for the first time (I also have a video on this). Thanks for the questions

Hi yes the new grow will produce fruit. In my opinion you will end up with more cucumbers but they will be smaller and have more risk for issues (disease mold because they grow into a jungle decreasing air flow). I find that when I did not prune them and keep things organized I would miss many cucumbers becuase I couldnt see them. Also by pruning and growing vertically I can fit the plants closer together = more yield. I feel that the amount of energy and nutrients a plant pulls is limited and with pruning the energy is very focussed on the fruit. Those are some of the reasons I prune the cucumbers. Hi Dawn, you can break or cut the tendrils no problem it will not hurt the plant, just watch for if they are the ones supporting your main vine, probably dont want to cut those as the plant if tall could fall over.

I am growning my cucumbers up an old gate, when it reaches the top I want it to spread left and right along the fence, which has four rails to follow. Am I better off NOT REMOVING the extra growth. I would hope the extra growth and making more plant could mean I can get cucumbers growing along each rail from each extra growth, is this correct? If I don't I guess I would let the cucumber main stem reach the top, around 4 feet high, then train it along in one direction, always removing the extra growth at each junction or "Node" Could I just let mine grow totally, and tie where needed I guess is my question please. Hi Neil, what you are trying to do I believe can be done. I have not done it myself but have seen examples. What I would do is prune each "node" or sucker untill your vine is the height you want on the fence. Then you have a choice you can either bend the main stem growth to one side and let a node / sucker grow out the opposite way. OR you can remove the main stem once at the height you need and let the last 2 nodes one on each side become your 2 new vines then train them along the fence. I would do the second option myself. Also you could as you described let it totally grow attaching where ever you can to the fence and gate to support the plant. My opinion is that this would work but you may or may not have less overall yeild. I feel less because a lot more of the plants time and energy goes into vegetative growth vs fruit growth. However the difference might not be enough to matter. Also when I have left my cucumbers to grow without pruning it quickly becomes a tangled mess (I grow 20 plus cucumbers in a fairly small bed). When facing a tangeled mess I can miss cucumbers that are ready easier and I also dont feel as motivated to get in and pick when it looks like a big mess lol. @@EasyGardenHacks Thanks for this. All I can say from my experiance is, last year I grew 2 Cucumber plants, Marketmore. I put them both into one old water tank, about 3 feet by two feet wide and two feet deep. To save price on compost, I used old turf in the bottom of the tub, soil dug from a lawn, and in the top 10 inches, Multi purpose compost. I planted the Cucumbers, gave them plenty of water. They grew in partial shade in a hot summer. In their most productive times, I was harvesting 2 or 3 Cucumbers each day, with no idea of what I was doing. I let them go up a fence, around 5 feet high, them any way they wanted as there was room where they were. I will try and add pictures of their location, by showing this years plants in the same place. As I can't retrieve many pictures from last year, because my new windows 10 confuses me, I will see what I can do. P.S. I killed my best plant this year by being on a south facing wall, on a concrete path in full sun. 1 day was all it took, I guess the plant is made out of water, and I boiled it.

If it means anything I pruned one of my cucumber plants at the base thinking it was a sucker! I guess I was the sucker on that one. Cucumbers can only take some much heat, my hoophouse gets into the 40 celcius or 105 F range and thats pushing it. It is partial shade in the afternoon. Hi Hatuxka, depending on the type of cucumber plant you have you may end up with more males than females. Usually males show up first then both after. So if your second vine is further up your plant it makes sense to me. One option is to limit the growth on your main stem by pruning it and let the second vine (one showing more females) go instead of the first.

Hi Deb, the plant will continue to grow, depending on the disease the plant may fully recover and carry on or it may continue to stuggle. I remove all dead, dying / yellowed leaves. Hi Son, I use a 4-4-4 mix in the soil beneath the plant. I also put a layer of compost (in my case aged horse poo) about 1-2" in the spring. I spay the leaves with epsom salts and humic acid. Check out my other cucumber videos I have all of the above in there. The other thing that might help thicken your stems is to have them in a place where a breeze / air flow can occur. Plants that bend a bit in the breeze tend to grow stronger stems. Thanks for the question.

The American just show some young ones, while the Japanese has buds, but the plants outgrow the American's. My first year of experimenting on cucumbers. I use 13-13-13 and also All-Purpose Miracle Gro. I do have compost (from mostly rotten vegetables). My plant stems don't look as good as yours. Hope will get some this year.

Hi, great question, Yes they can. Let the sucker grow to 6 inches, then cut and place in container of water a few inches up the stem. Remember to replace the water every day or two or else it becomes stagnant. Roots should appear from the stem within a week or two. Harden off if kept indoors. Then plant. Hope this helps. Hi Cory, your totally right, its the stalk of the female flower that will go on to be a cucumber, this found behind the flower. Hi Sandy, that can be very frustrating. If this is happening to the small / young cucumbers it is likely that they are not getting pollinated. This can also cause the cucumber to grow in a weird shape. Try to attract the pollinating insects like bees. Also you could try hand pollinating the female flowers with the male flower. I grow borage in my hoophouse to attrack the pollinators. Best of luck!

Hi Nisha, I would still remove the sucker, if you let the sucker grow it will become a whole other vine that will have flowers and cucumbers form on it. I prefer to direct the growth up the one vine, I feel it results in larger yields and is easier to maintain.

Hi Joseph, yes that can happen for a number of reasons. Poor pollination is one, do you have lots of bees and bugs that are flying from flower to flower? The other and most common to me is moisture stress. Cucumbers need plenty of water while setting and developing the fruit. Hot temps can cause moisture stress. Try mulching if you can and or making sure the soil stays moist by checking daily how dry the soil is getting and watering as needed. Lastly even overfertilizing with nitrogen (first number of the three on a fertilizer bag) can affect the growth. The good news you can still eat them!

Hi Carlo, I think you are asking about the tendril which is the part of the plant that looks like a really small vine, it reaches out and is curly/spiral shaped. What it is doing is reaching for things to grab onto to help support the plant as it grows, as the plant gets bigger and heavier and as the fruit grows and adds weight to the plant. I will guide them around the structure I am growing the plant up. In this video you can see the yellow ropes I would wrap the tendril around the rope to help it grab on. Great question! Just came across your vid, very informative. What type of fertilizer do you use on your cucumber plants? Your plants leaves are a full dark green. At the tip of my vines the leaves are green but half way down they are starting to have yellow spots and towards the base of the plant they are more yellow. Hi Pete, I use a 4-4-4 powder fertilizer under the plant as I am putting them in (I have a vid on planting cucumbers). The top layer of my bed has about 1" compost (aged horse manure). I also foliar spray epsom salts (again another vid on this) and foliar spray humic acid (yet one more vid on that one). I may feed them again with a low power liquid fertlizer if they show signs of needing it. Your description of symptoms may be a magnesium deficiency, good news it can be easily treated with epsom salts either by foliar spraying (check out my video for details), sorry for the shamless plugs! or mixing 1-2 tablespoons (15-30ml) of epsom salts with 1 gallon (4 litres) of water and pouring this over the plant and at its base. I hope that is your issue as it is a simple cheap fix. Best of luck.

Hi Brian. If you want to help with pollination then yes you can do it by hand. I would take off one of the male flowers (the ones with just a stem behind them) find the female flowers (look for tiny cucumber starting where the stem would be). You will notice the male center of the flower sticks out a bit and the center of the femlae flower has an indent. You can pobably guess what is next. Dab the male into the female. The other option (might be too late now) is the type of cucumber you plant. There are 3 types, mostly male, mostly female and all female. The most expensive seeds tend to be parthenocarpic (all female) which dont require any pollination for cucumber growth. Also consider planting things that attract the pollinators. I use borage for this, its growing next to and around the cucumber row and its also edible. Thanks for the question.

How to get rid of the bitterness from the cucumber ?

Hi Bharti, good question. Bitterness can happen for a couple of reason. Usually it has to do with the plants being stressed. Lack of water is one way to stress the plant. Dont let the soil go dry especially when the plant is in the flower or fruit forming stage. If you put your finger in the soil it should not be dry past 3" deep. Using mulch helps with water retention. Too cold or hot a temperature can also stress the plant causing bitterness. Mulching can help again here with keeping soil temp lower. Also for me I grow in a hoop house which gets really hot so I have a fan to circulate the air when too hot. The other thing to consider is how often you are picking the cucumbers, dont let them got too big / old, pick them once the flower has fallen off. Frequent picking also keeps the plant producing new growth. Lastly if you aready have bitter cucumbers alot of the bitterness is in the ends or skin so consider cutting off the ends and peeling before eating. Hope this helps. Hi easy life, I do not have any indian courgette but I looked them up and they are similar / same as zucchini plants. Yes you can prune them. I would prune the lower leaves if touching the ground or getting old and faded. You can also prune out some of the extra criss crossing branches/leaves. The idea is to increase air flow (helps prevent powdery mildew), make it easier for your polinators (bees and bugs) to find and get to the flowers where the fruit will develop. Pruning will also produce more growth up top. Very similar to the cucumbers. Thanks for the question. Hope the info helped. Phili
