I wondered how the power decrease was implemented. Would stand to reason that restricted airflow (likely less fuel delivery and a knock back in timing as well) contributes to it. Would seem easy enough to go with a different intake and a tune to adjust would solve this quick and easy.

I was wondering about since they announced it. I thought it was all ECU and I was half right anyway. The HC Filter is pretty massive so I'm sure that's half the story. Any tune that is off the shelf will work around it to stay with LEV III compliance. Maybe that's DiabloSport did but they could have just told me that instead of what they emailed me.

From what I've read the hydrocarbon trap is used to reduce cold start emissions.

Good facts on the intake hydrocarbon “trap”. MAF table scale has most likely changed. I would put a 2020 GT350 air intake on, see if a mil comes on, or how much LTFT’s change from stock after a 100mi drive compared to stock “as is” LTFT’s. Think you might get your 10+hp back, before adding a tune.

Pretty sure if I just pull the trap the MAF table will be off and it will throw a code. I plan to have it a tuner pull it and then adjust the MAF table accordingly. I don't want to mess with the spark table as I drive all over the country and there are plenty of places in the mid & south west where it's difficult to find 91 let alone 93. I think that will get back the lost 10 and we will see what else can be done to add a few more.

The ecu isn’t different as far as i know. There’s an extra filter of something in the intake that restricts air flow. You can easily take it out.

They may have just said that there was a 10 horsepower loss. Let’s say the 2024 Mustang GT is going to have 475 horsepower. Then Ford can say it’s gaining 25 horsepower over the previous model, instead of just 15. It’s a bit of a shell game.

I thought that as well but no more. A HC Trap is going to decrease airflow and when you decrease airflow you need to recalibrate for that loss. It's not much but it's enough to drop the 22's down to 470 crank HP. I'll be digging into this more tomorrow with a video to follow shortly there after. Thanks for your comment and for watching. Hey Tony, great article. So will you be removing the carbon trap to check your theory? Can it be removed simply in 10 mins from inside the intake tube or is it more complicated and feeding the ECU info? Is the engine tune from Ford the same with or without the carbon trap? As the Mach 1 has the GT350 intake manifold and cold air system it should be tuned for higher air flow anyway? I can't see 10 or 20hp increase affecting anything tune wise with the factory ECU? What are your thoughts, thanks, Marcus

Thanks for watching and you are going have to watch the next couple of videos. I can tell you it wouldn't be wise to just pull HC filter. Ford did change the settings to work with the restricted air flow. It's all part of the puzzle. I do have a tuner and we are working through it to find something that will work and produce HP/TQ gains while running on pump gas.

So many people are spending 1000s of dollars on bolt on's, it would be good to find less expensive ways to add max HP that don't affect a factory warranty. For the Mach 1 only, it would be really good to find how far you could go to make actual HP increasing mods maybe 30 - 40 HP running 95/98 gas that don't involve a tune? It that possible?

@@TonysFordsandMustangs I just pulled my HC filter off, it was pretty easy. Im not an expert but I really don't think it will hurt anything, I think the computer would adjust with the extra airflow, just like adding a filter the blue filter. Like I said, not a expert so remove at your own risk

@@budhajek6279 I looked at it yesterday. I'm waiting till I'm at the tuner so I get a recalibrated tune after removal. Did you just pull the MAF sensor and depress the tabs around the HC filter? That's how it looked like it would come apart.

Actually you can remove the hydrocarbon filter or do as I did and replace the tube with one from a GT350. I have over 200 miles on one with no CEL or engine issues. Other guys have simply removed the filter from the tube with the same results. Take it out Tony you will be fine.

There really was not change in horsepower reduction. All Ford used was a different scale of measurement for the emissions people of the U.S. So, no one lost any power from 2021 to 2022 models. It was just all on paper to please The National Vehicle and Fuel Emissions Laboratory (NVFEL). This was stated from a Ford representative on this subject. So, all 2022 Mustang owners such as myself can relax. Plus, I have seen dyno testing from 2021 and 2022. No change in horsepower and torque.

Anything can be custom tuned (the route I'm going) but you need to have a good tuner that knows what they are doing. I could not find an off shelf tune from the standard people in the business (other than DiabloSport) at this point in time. I did not check with Lund so that's a possibility.

If you are going twin turbos the last thing you are worried about is a Hydrocarbon filter. :) I have a guy that can get in and make the changes. If you can't find anyone once you get there let me know.

Thanks for watching. It's not much but we all do things to pick up a bit of HP here or there. It's how the car community works. I think the key wording for the 2024 (how the new Mustang has been billed so far) is "close to 500 HP" Does that mean 480 to 470? We will all know in a few weeks.

Seriously though I thought that if you put in an aftermarket intake that the engine would just relearn the new airflow from the aftermarket intake in the engine. So without a “tune” for the engine the aftermarket intake would not gain much power.
