Flare your wads depending on how your components marry together is a most! Great video and subject…I been using a over shot card between the powder and wad. I noticed this problem the last few year with my loads. I’ve also flared TPS wads they are easy to flare and it works great depending on wad material!

Another great vid. Keep them coming. I remember using a thin overshot card or one split in half between the powder and wad some 30 years ago. I'm definitely going to try this out .

The OSC method works, but now those things are even starting to get expensive. Flaring is a good cheap affordable option. Thanks for commenting!

Thanks I use brass hulls with an overshot card.gonna try this over the powder card instead of a fiber wad

gonna be loading 2 3/4 20ga 7/8 oz steel with either that TPS wad or the CDS wad (i believe the rebranded PR wads). Any recommendation or advice since you have those wads?
@avidwaterfowler752226 күн бұрын
As far as I know, you’re right about the precision reloading wads. I think the 20ga TPS wads are great, but you just can beat the patterns with the PR/CSD wads with steel and bismuth. I will say, don’t go over 3 shot in steel with the CSD wads as they’re a bit thin and will get pin holes with larger shot.

@ this helps a ton! I’m waiting on my status of steel manual before ordering components but I’m curious for opinions on wads. I’m going to be loading 6s and my I only hunt upland at the moment but want to try ducks again next year so might load some heavier stuff, for 7/8 oz of steel 6s in a 2 3/4 20 ga do you think the CDS wads would be better?

When the powder ignites the initial blast flares the skirt with heat and pressure i would think. I tap my powder down before I put in the wad ..also i check the fit of the wad in the hull ..youle fell the difference in every hull and wad combo
@avidwaterfowler75222 ай бұрын
I think you’re missing the point. Of course the operating pressure will flare the gas seal, this is to prevent powder migration. Never saw powder past the wad before? I want to burn every grain of powder. I’ve seen powder go right past the wad during seating. Try clear hulls one day….
@danmarzano41808 ай бұрын
Overshot card would increase pressure, I assume this does not? Once fired the base of the wad should seal against the hull anyway correct?
@avidwaterfowler75228 ай бұрын
I don’t think an OSC wad affect pressure if any at all. However, I’ve never tested it. This does not affect pressure, you are following the recipe whether it’s your load or not. You’d be using the same powder and wad it calls for regardless. The gas seal gets flared out naturally upon firing.

Any 12 ga 3in 1.25oz loads using blue dot? Been using the Precision reloading data but it seems pretty conservative on the velocity (and pressure, no way to measure it but does not feel very stout, just personal feel) I know your a 10ga guy but just curious. Because of you i'm thinking about picking up a BPS 10ga. Found a local guy with the 30in barrel. Might do just the trick for pass shooting geese.

I know you asked for 3" 1.25. But here is a 12g 2- 3/4 1.24oz with blue dot. Federal GM waa12f114. 1.25 #4, 36.5g blue dot 209 Nobel sport primer. 1290 fps 9800 psi. 2-3/4 1-3/8, oz. Fed GM. 36.5 g blue dot. Waa12r #4 shot. 1295 fps 10,000 psi. They mimic "golden pheasant"

Have you checked alliant website for load data? I mostly use Blue Dot for my heavy bismuth loads. It’s great for 12 and 10 heavy lead and bismuth loads. Precision reloading data is WAY to conservative. I have looked up 10ga loading data on Alliant website and compared to Precision Reloading with a difference of over 4gr of steel powder. You may want to try slowly working you way up and look for pressure signs. You can also compare other recipes using similar wads. Get the 10ga BPS, you want regret it!

@@avidwaterfowler7522 It wasnt much help. Just gave loading for lead and bismuth mainly.

I seemed to get a lower velocity when I flared the gas seal on the WAA12F114 with the 12ga 3 inch cheds. Using longshot. Is this normal? Maybe makes more pressure? I'm a beginner though haha. Great video.
@avidwaterfowler7522 Жыл бұрын
The flaring of the wad would not increase pressure and be slower as long as you’re comparing the same powder. I have not noticed any issues with flaring a wad over the last 5 or so years.
@HawkEye02088 Жыл бұрын
@@avidwaterfowler7522 gotcha. Lots a variables. Could've been the cheap chronograph or maybe a little light on the powder for those ones.
@raysherrod9322 Жыл бұрын
The best way I have found to stop the powder from leaking by is to put a over shot card on top the powder. Then put the wad in and finish the loading.

That’s exactly why I flare the wads. Trying to cut cost where I can.
