I’m talking about office jobs that can be done remotely. Dublin is full of multinational tech and finance companies. That’s the kind of job I mean. I myself have been working from home for almost a year now, if I chose to go abroad for an extended period, I know I would run into tax issues after a certain amount of time.
@lucieciepka10313 жыл бұрын
I guess that for now, as long as you are renting something, you will always pay a city tax. Maybe it will be people like you paying their taxes twice in two places that will pick up the economy and compensate for the tax evasion of others.
@ElibelDublin3 жыл бұрын
@@lucieciepka1031 I’m talking about residency for income tax purposes. If I normally work in an office, bar the occasional work trip or holiday, I will be in that country for most of the fiscal year and therefore pay my tax there. If I decide to work remotely from elsewhere and end up staying in a different country for an extended period (more than 182 days), then it becomes a problem in terms of where do I pay my tax (and how does my employer manage this?) That is why some companies are starting to ask their employees who have gone abroad (or back to their home country) to return. Of course, the self employed and freelancers have to resolve the issue on their own, so the situation is slightly different, but still something to be considered.

That's what I believe... whenever I mention wanting to work abroad everyone always says "so you want an extended holiday" when what I am seeking is to just live and work abroad meanwhile having the same level of leisure as I do now, just perhaps things for akin to the culture in which I am living in. Personally, I don't really believe in "holidays" if that makes sense... I believe in extended periods of travel and rest days (or even weeks if you can afford it) but not really under the term of "holiday"... does holiday mean travelling?? or does it mean taking some time off work?? I can take time off work yet still be doing chores and working on projects 9-5... is that sill a holiday? Such as being a student... you may not be at school 52 weeks a year but there is still generally a constant workflow yet you are considered to be "on holiday". Or if you are backpacking Europe... is that a holiday? yes, you have travelled away from your norm, but hardly sleeping, perhaps working at your hostel... i just find it to be very unclear but idk if that is just me

Key points: [1] The overall decline in airline travel is temporary and directly related to policies of Governments that aimed to minimise the transmission of the COVID-19. Nevertheless, even a decline of 2/3 still means that 1 billion passenger-flights happened last year. [2] Closures of borders are temporary (like an emergency or a natural disaster). [3] Every country depends on travel, on trade, and/or some level of tourism for its economy to function and to prosper. [4] We just have to seize the opportunities to make travel even safer for everyone. It is already happening: e.g., cruises have resumed in several countries even though they were banned for the past year in the U.S.A. and Canada.
@littlebootsxxiv68713 жыл бұрын
I thought this was a disappointing video. Yes, digital nomads are a growing phenomenon, but as they settle for a number of months in the same place, their impact on the travel industry is limited. Many of the vlogs I've seen suggest that they are often living on pretty tight budgets, so their contribution to the economy of the country they stay in is minimal (especially if they're not paying local income tax on their earnings). There are countries such as Thailand with 20% of GDP coming from pre-covid tourism. How are these countries coping? What is the prospect that they will be able to attract tourists back while protecting their populations from imported virus outbreaks? Countries will be looking to get the high spenders back in as quickly as possible, after business people who invest in their economies. High net worth individuals (from anywhere in the world, not exclusively the West) will be the ones that countries target first; backpackers who spend a few dollars a day will be way down on the priority list. Mass tourism will return, but governments will have to consider the health risks compared to the economic gains. This also touches on my final point. Countries want tourists to come and spend money. It helps the economies and can assist the balance of payments. The suggestion that tourism should do more to help local communities is misplaced. It is up to the governments (local and national) to ensure that the money tourism brings in is channelled to local projects. It also ignores the tourist industry corporate social responsibility schemes that do work with charities and NGOs. I could go on, but I'll just repeat that I thought this was a poor and superficial video, not up to the usual Economist standard.
@chrismckellar93503 жыл бұрын
The way things are going, mass tourism as seen prior to this global health pandemic will not return, as countries will introduce either quarantine free 'travel bubbles' with other like mind countries and/or introduce 'no vaccine/no enter' boarder policies for non citizens. The biggest threat to to global air travel and tourism is the side effects of a warming planet like climate change, future global heath pandemics, global finance and geopolitical uncertainties, etc.
@littlebootsxxiv68713 жыл бұрын
Yes, I agree although I think the timeframes are slightly different. Dealing with Covid will take two to three years with an ongoing legacy effect. Climate change will be longer term with the pressures ramping up over the next ten years or so. Both will have long term implications for travel and will shape the world we live in (in part) because of these implications. On the topic of mass tourism, I think it will return as countries look to exploit demand and syphon precious foreign exchange earnings; but it is likely to be more selective with travel bubbles/corridors, probably with a regional bias and higher fiscal barriers.

I know that a lot of people are correctly skeptical but I do think things will return to normal faster than most think. Every man and his dog believes that this current covid-19 reality is here to stay and that this is the 'new normal', forever. When that level of strong belief happens, I start to think in a more contrarian manner. Even if a person has high status and wealth etc, this is a pretty boring reality, even for them. Who wants a world where it is so difficult to travel and spread your 'influence'? A world where 33% of all 300 million dollar planes in existence are just sitting around collecting dust. A world where there are very limited social gatherings or parties etc and lock-downs occurring at a moments notice forever and ever. No, I don't buy it. I have more confidence than that in the world. I think that already there are big signs of improvement with the vaccine and a number of rapid testing methods have been developed that will no doubt be deployed in Airports. I would guess that there would be a two tiered approach to international travel. First, in each country the most at risk people would be vaccinated by October 2021. However, as the year progresses it's likely that there will be a reduction in cases and more confidence in the economy. I'll guess that if a person wants to travel internationally and they have a vaccine certificate, they will be able to swiftly pass through customs. If they don't have a vaccine certificate then you would be considered to be traveling at your own risk where if you test positive for covid at the airport, then you have to spend 14 days mandatory hotel quarantine (Probably 5days by then) or do 'stay at home quarantine' for 14 days or something like that. But you wouldn't be prevented from traveling. So then there is incentive to take the vaccine before you travel. Then by 2022, I'll guess that something will happen and maybe enough people around the world would have had the vaccine to render covid not as much of a threat and then everyone will be able to travel just like they did in 2019. Maybe this is a pie in the sky way of thinking and I'm wrong but I do feel pretty optimistic at the moment. Central banks around the world are stating that they are feeling increasingly confident about the economic recovery and they are projecting a much better second half of 2021. Big investment banks etc are predicting the same thing based on less need for lock-downs and restrictions due to the rollout of vaccines. Domestic travel should start to boom first and then a staggered decrease in restrictions for international travel.

Here is an idea: create virus-free areas where people are only allowed to enter after test and quarantine. Then keep expanding and multiplying those areas until they cover the entire country, the entire world. By testing and moving people, it is possible to expand the virus-free areas and shrink the infected areas. The advantage is that you allow the economic activities to continue normally BOTH in the infected and virus-free areas. People in virus-free areas are allowed to travel to any other virus-free area. And people from infected areas are allowed to travel to any other infected area. Only people who need to cross the borders of areas like truck drivers need to take some special precautions. As infected areas shrink, it becomes easier and easier to stop the spread of the virus, as you know exactly where the virus is and can allocate more and more resources. In theory it is much easier to close the borders of a single city than an entire country. Determine which cities are infected and which cities are virus-free. Close the borders of these areas or cities. People who want to move from infected areas to virus-free areas need to be tested and quarantined. The problem with most countries is that they are secretly aiming for herd immunity because they only try to SLOW the spread of the virus. But it doesn't matter if it is slow or quick, the virus is still SPREADING, and it will only stop when there are no more people to infect, which is the definition of herd immunity. Instead of mitigation, we should aim for eradication. Instead of slowing the spread, we should STOP the spread of the virus. We can stop the spread of the virus by closing borders. The virus is carried by people. If people cannot cross borders, neither can the virus. You can completely block the virus from entering a certain region by closing the borders. Country borders are already closed all over the world, why not close the borders of cities? The closure is temporary if you test and move people to expand the virus-free areas and shrink the infected areas. Most people live and work in the same city. Even if the city borders were closed, the disruption to their normal lives would be minimal. For most people nothing would change. Trying to close down bars and restaurants is ludicrous and impossible. It is very easy for people to SECRETLY open bars and restaurants, have religious meetings, private parties, etc. You would need a police officer in every single household in the city to keep an eye on people but there is not enough police officers to do that. On the other hand closing city borders is much easier. For most cities there are only a few points of entry. Putting police officers permanently in those points of entry is easy. And technically the city borders would still be open. People would be required to be tested and quarantined in order to cross the border, that is all. After the quarantine people would be free to go anywhere they want in the virus-free areas, unrestricted, completely assured they are not infected.

Over 1 billion people travelled last year despite the pandemic. China alone represents over 120 million tourists per year. Travel reduced temporarily does not mean that travel stopped forever. Reduced travel in some places does not mean that it is not happening elsewhere or at all. The numbers of passengers by sea, by land, and by air remain huge overall worldwide.

As they said in the video that 25 % of the travel will be gone forever. And the revenue generated by business related travels are more than leisure travels since the beginning. Considering today's era, I don't see why any enterprise would send their employees to another continent while they have effectively managed the same( in some cases even better than being physically present there) with video conferencing.
@brentshuffler12343 жыл бұрын
@@Psychology_Major Yes, in the short term, extraordinary public-health measures have prevented many trips. However, with widespread testing, well tested protocols, and rapidly increasing vaccination of populations, travel will rebound quickly and be better and safer than ever. Barbados already proved it as soon as travel restrictions were lifted in main source-countries. Likewise, tens of millions of past cruise-line passengers are eager to resume their vacations as soon as cruises resume in their regions. Some segments (e.g., business travel) might decline on the near term, but other segments will rebound quickly and continue to grow.

Your vaccination coverage map has a mistake. According to it, Chile is expected to achieve full vaccination coverage in mid 2022, but actually we are the 4th most vaccinated country in the world. We are expected to achieve herd immunity in around 6 months from now, probably before most of european countries.

@@angrybrit7331 Yes, a community can achieve herd inmunity naturaly, i never said it couldn't. My point is that you can speed up the process by vaccinating a lot of people, wich is Chile's case. In that same line, the health organizations have set vaccination goals to achieve herd inmunity. Today, that goal is 70% of people within a country.

I don't buy this nonsense of travel changing substantially. Naturally, things will be different for a relatively short period in the immediate period after the pandemic. However, one of the major characteristics of the human race is very much personified by Oliver Twist. "Please sir, can I have some more" and that means that businesses across the board in the tourism industry, countries that depend on tourism as one of their major industries, traditional resort cities etc are all going to get the 'can I have some more' bug very quickly and will start to attract more and more people. On top of all that, people have a very strong 'itchy feet' trait. I tend to feel that the biggest changes post pandemic will be within the media and especially there will likely be a crackdown by legislators world wide on social media companies like Zuckenberg's FB which is quite frankly running amok and clearly think they can bully governments into doing what they want. I foresee that Zuckenberg and people like him are about to get a huge kick up the rear end by governments worldwide.

2 other possible outcomes for travel include: 1) Countries keeping their borders closed until there’s mass vaccination in every country. This would overcome the unfair use of vaccine passports and the potential for false negatives with COVID tests. The down side with this is that borders will open in 2025 at the earliest. 2) Countries reopen to leisure travel but keep in place a 2 week quarantine
