The United States is currently testing a 6th Gen fighter. I'm guessing the US wants to retire the F-22 which is expensive and yet also becoming obsolete in the face of 6th Gen tech (as a stealth air superiority fighter). The F-22 just doesn't have the same level of advantage over adversaries that it used to and is not a design that is particularly easy to upgrade. I think a plan of: have tier-one 6th Gen fighters with a big edge over adversaries (even their newest fighters), F-35's in the mid tier with good capabilities and stealth, then F-15EX and F-16 as a lower cost third tier that still can be effective at many missions that do not require stealth or very advanced systems. (Though even these will have some advanced upgrades.) Seems like a good plan to me.

From my understanding, although the F-22 is a very capable air superiority platform it has a few intractable capability gaps due to the bleeding edge nature of its design. It was made before modern battlefield data management systems were a thing, It isn't compatible with any currant helmet mounted targeting systems, it has virtually no ground attack capability (something that has become increasingly important of late), integrating upgrades is difficult, its weapon bays significantly limit the types of ordinance it can carry and it's expensive to operate. The F-35 was supposed to not have these deficiencies, it achieved that for the most part but politics turned the project into a corporate welfare program that introduced avoidable delays and unnecessary costs.
@Teampegleg3 жыл бұрын
The F-35 was never meant to be a primary ACM fighter, it was supposed to be the strike counter-part to the F-22. The two aircraft were meant to compliment each other, similar to earlier generation aircraft where you had a clear separation between strike and fighter aircraft. With the advent of good PGMs for the first time a good fighter aircraft could be a good strike aircraft. So the fourth generation you saw aircraft that could do both roles pretty well. But with the fifth generation being stealth and requirements that the weapons be in bays you see the separation of the roles again. For the missions and aircraft that the F-35 was explicitly designed to replace (and the A-10 was never on that list) it does it pretty well. Sure it is having teething issues as there is a lot of new technology in the F-35, but the F-22 had similar issues. And in fact those issues being harped on my the news is one of of the reasons why the F-22 was canceled prematurely. Now the same news media is going after the F-35 and playing up the F-22 while ignoring their role in getting the F-22 canceled.

F-22 is often overhyped, because stealth is often over hyped. For 5th generation fighters like F-22, F-35 J-20, Stealth does NOT mean you're invisible to radars, a low frequency early warning radar can detect stealth fighters from very far away, the only thing is, these early warning radars aren't accurate enough to guide missiles. (there have been reports of US navy using the E-2D to guide missiles to the general vicinity of a stealth target and then let the radar on the missile to detect the stealth target from a close range.) Which means stealth is more about DISRUPTING your enemy's missile launch process, by not allowing your enemy's targeting radars from getting a solid lock on, and less about remaining unseen. It's much easier to shake off a missile, if it momentarily looses you, even for 1 second, then your stealth has done its job. So a good enough stealth is really good enough. What's more important for jets of the future is system integration and datalinks that provides a network-centric weapons platform. F-22 is simply incapable of doing that, F-22 might be a fierce tiger but it's a lone tiger, the F-35 and J-20 with modern sensors like EODAS, are like wolfpacks. The real reason why the US military stopped producing the F-22 is not entirely because of cost, it's because F-22 was already an outdated concept 10 years ago.

I'd say it's a reasonable move. You don't want an aircraft that is famously maintenance-heavy even for your capabilities, no matter how good it is. Because the Raptor is still nowadays more than capable of wrecking shit up, but what use is having one if most of the time is going to be under maintenance and not ready for takeoff? Plus, I honestly think China still has a lot to catch up. Even as a layman I can tell those canards aren't doing miracles for the J-20's alleged stealth, and the FC-31 despite looking like more than a match for 4th gen fighters, draws its greatest strength at being carrier-based, but China does not have a sizeable carrier force (yet). Plus, we still know nothing about the quality of sensors and radars on board of Chinese aircrafts. I just hope America uses this time window to upgrade and possibly put in service a new fleet of fighters. They have the experience of the Raptor program and the JSF to know what should work best at this point.

Yeah, canard presence has no effect on stealth if properly designed. In fact, F-35 early design had canard, but designers dropped it later since there is not enough space to cram it into a single engine fighter that has to work for three branches. As for sensors, Chinese ones are definitely up there with US or very close, much better than Russian ones at least. It is shown when they imported Russian jets, they always switch out the Russian sensors for Chinese ones, like active phase array radar. Compatibility is definitely not an issue here.

It's more suited to their industrial model and the ability to ramp up production at shorter notice makes it harder to estimate numbers with confidence. Especially if large numbers of them are built as relatively "dumb" (and cheap) decoys that look exactly like one of their more high value systems. They don't necessarily even have to accomplish a mission, just go out and draw SAM and AAM fire away from actual high-value targets. Fun fact: Apparently the F22 is so nasty that they don’t even let the pilots perform certain maneuvers during air shows or to fly it like they would in combat. I think it’s far more capable than we think. Not many weapons that the US doesn’t sell to other counties. There is a reason they aren’t selling it to allies when they have no issue selling F35. Yes, retiring the F-22 early would be a heavy mistake. It's better for our military to keep these things around for another 20 years. Even if they aren't very far along with NGAD, maintaining F-22 is a huge resource suck for no good reason. It has custom computers & comms systems that aren't compatible with F-35. There are many times more F-35 than F-22, but the cost of writing avionics code is basically the same for one airplane or 10,000. Spending 2x the manpower writing software to get 1.1x as many airplanes with updated avionics makes no sense. Just making the F-35 sensors and avionics 10% better probably costs much less and is more effective. The F-22 is a very good airplane, but it's great at doing things we don't need to do. The maneuverability and speed advantages of F-22 don't seem especially useful when F-35 has better sensors and can engage from longer distance so it is less likely to get shot at in the first place.

The only reason J20 production rate is what it is right now, is because China is waiting for its WS-15 engine, the true intended more powerful and thrust vectoring engine for the J20, to be ready. Then they will ramp it up a lot more, and with China's efficient manufacturing and lower cost you can bet they will easily surpass the US production rate of these planes, 5th or 6th gen. Also China's economy is estimated to surpass the US economy by 2028. It's also possible that China might introduce their 6th gen fighter around the same time the US does. They tend to be humble about their developments and they already have stealth fighter (and soon stealth bomber) tech. They recently made major breakthroughs in their engines too. For instance, the main reason the US stopped F22 production was because, quote from then defense secretary "China will not have a 5th generation prototype until 2020s", and he was so far off about that. xD
@davidshoyt19793 жыл бұрын
what the hell is thrust vectoring going to do? do some useless maneuvers to avoid far more deadly missiles that come out of nowhere and in numbers they cant avoid? also russia and chinas thrust vectoring tech is dumb. it lights them up on radar like crazy and makes them an even bigger target. there are better ways to thrust vector not that the chinese or russians can figure it out.
@zszs1003 жыл бұрын
@@davidshoyt1979 Hey armchair expert, settle down. F22 is thrust vectoring, Su35 and Su-57 are thrust vectoring, etc. Manuverability matters, especially stealth vs stealth when both detects each other at a lower range. If manuverability doesn't matter, why not just make a large stealth bomber that carries a bunch of missiles instead? The F35 also has a thrust vectoring engine. In fact both the Chinese and Russian both have thrust vectoring engines already and demonstrated. Not that the Chinese and Russians can figure out? Sure, keep thinking that. This is the mindset that put the F22 out of production, so yeah keep thinking that. xD
@davidshoyt19793 жыл бұрын
@@zszs100 the f35 ability to point it's nozzle downward to allow it to land vertically is a crummy example of thrust vectoring. it's literally only for allowing the aircraft to lift off and land not for any in air maneuverability. Thrust vectoring was conceived as a safety feature to get aircraft out of stalls and other things. it adds weight, cost, maintenance issues and is only useful in less than one percent of the time the aircraft may ever need a feature like that. also it messes up the stealth characteristics of the aircraft. Theres more than one way to thrust vector, heck steer even, and regarding stealth very good reason you'd want it ...just not want it in the primitive and self defeating way the chinese and russians do it.

6th Generation fighters aren't going to happen any time soon.
