I wish I saw this years ago. I've been homeschooling my kids but I've been second guessing this decision everyday and feel I'm being pressured to put them back in public school at nearly every conversation with my family. I know they mean well, I just wish I had been supported and encouraged instead of forced to do what they want. Now that it's summer, the decision is up again. I'm prayerfully considering the options and thankful to have come across this video. I'm also thankful to have these options

When my son turned 2 I sat down with him and begin to go through flashcards and kid books..I saw that in just 3 days he was picking up on everything I was teaching him. That was the moment I thought about homeschooling. I homeschooled him through preschool and decided to let him try kindergarten.....he HATED IT... was ahead in his class but HATED IT and he was bored and had already learned everything. So I pulled him out and homeschooled him. Then we tried a different school..it was supposed to be the best in our area...HE HATED IT. STAYED ON THE HONOR ROLL the entire school year, his teacher told me to stop teaching him because he was too far ahead...also the kids were terrible and the teacher herself admitted that she was overwhelmed. So I made him finish but promised that I would never make him go through that again. What he learned in 180 days I taught him in 30....its crazy. So I got to try both and I can truly say I see a major difference. He was so anxious and irritable when he went to public school..there was no room for creativity...it was nuts. My daughter just turned 5 and will be starting 1st-grade work this August because I started her in kindergarten at 3.5...I refuse to put her through the same issue. I love teachers..what they do is AMAZING...however the school system is jacked up and I am blessed that I don't have I to allow my kids to be a part of it. Also, both of my kids are in sports..my son plays soccer, basketball, football and karate and my daughter does gymnastics and soccer...so they are around kids 24/7..., not to mention church activities and meeting up with other kids.. so socialization is not even an argument anymore. we all know public school kids who feel alone all the time. I think that homeschooling is NOT for everyone but has a lot of benefits; it is spreading like wildfire! ps. the amount of hw kids get now days is CRAZY.

Thanks a lot for taking the time to share story. I have four kids: 8,7,4,2 grades. We live in Pennsylvania. I'm noticing how much time they spend in school, then so many more hours doing HW, yet they seem tired and I don't really see growth and much learning. I'm considering switching to online home school or charter online school. I've watched a number of videos about common core being very damaging to our kids. The public school system isn't designed to advance our kids, but the agenda of the politicians. God bless you richly.

You have realized what scientists already knew. Children come hardwired for learning. Human beings learn by play bcs play IS learning. There's a general understanding that most skills a human learns before mastering that skill (mastering happens through committed application and practice in various way throughout time) takes maybe 50 hours within a YEAR's time. Adults always seem surprised by how fast a child learns things. But that only surprises us bcs we don't remember that very thing about ourselves. Learning is that natural to human beings. The public school systems destroys that instinct. I should know. I have been a science public school teacher for 17 yrs. And it is my LAST year. I refuse to be a prison warden anymore. I applaud you for doing what you instinctively knew was right for your child.

@@elsaromero4743 I can. This is what my teaching colleagues do to young children in the elementary grades. It's why when I would get them for the 1st time as 6th and 7th graders, their lust for so much inquiry was beat out of them. They were defeated and had zero desire most of them, to be curious anymore.

She is 5 now and she's been homeschooled since her progress is off the charts and she gets to enjoy her days with family and active play without the stress of nightly homework. I work from home and I am blessed to have the opportunity to support her I'm this way.

Love always Jasmine we checked up with our state curriculum and my mother used Kahn Academy, had me take notes from there and do their tests as well. My mom also used to Finnish-based school model as well, we were also year-round as well except for the Holidays. There’s also great homeschool education books like “A Guide To Classical Education at Home” by Susan Wise Bauer and Jessy Wise. I didn’t get a “high school dipoma” but instead my mom just had me take the SAT (study from the SAT book) and go straight to community college. I had to take the GED test when I turned 16 so I could part time job (which doesn’t matter to future employers, they just care if you are trained in their field). Then your kid transfers to a four year institution.

homeschool mom here. my little boy needs first grade reading but second grade math. he can't read the math book, but can do the problems. how would a regular classroom ever be able to provide the custom program he needs. we struggle and sweat through the reading lessons, yet breeze through the math every day. it is time consuming and frustrating. but he deserves the best I can give him. parents are truly the ones to give this level of care. if you are committed to your child's future, you find a way.

If I had children, no doubt I'd homeschool them, even if I had to leave my country to have the right to do so. Here in Brazil, if parents atempt to homeschool their children, they can go to jail. It's something shameful how the state wants to have full control over people, trying to indoctrinate our little ones according to their own wish, for ideological and political purposes.

I've never developed well personally , and took time to understand myself and be more real and expressive by staying off from school for two years and get home schooled. Those two years of homeschooling made me really happy and more confident about myself, furthermore I socialised more and had a better life than going to school.

As wonderful as it sounds, home schooling is not for everyone. Some proponents seem to have forgotten to put one factor into consideration which is whether a home has the right emotional environment for children to live or learn. For many years, school had been an indispensable sanctuary for me for support, camaraderie, trust, social skills, learning, survival, and thrive. Home was a place where I dreaded going back to on a daily basis. As a teacher, I know some students cannot get the kind of support and opportunity at home and I try to help them excel. I respect and admire all those great parents (and siblings) who create the best learning environment for their kids, but for me it's Go School!

Definitely school is the option for most families and it needs to be as good a place as it can be, for educators and students alike. I was homeschooled and loved it, my mom went to school and loved it. Not all parents are meant to homeschool. “No two ways to skin a cat”.

This could be a great idea if every adult is cult enought, and have enought knowledge. Plus that they must be qualified to transmit this knowledge to their kids, and I started to study 3 years ago how to do this (but my knowledge is still not enough) Although he says you can socialize anyway, I think the school is one of the most rewarding ways to socialize. Actual education system is really bad if you ask me, but i think is better than homeschoolling your kids, unless you count with the preparation it takes. Sorry for bad english.
@ForChiddlers
@ForChiddlers 8 жыл бұрын
+unnombremuylargo you should seriously read some studies about homeschooling. School is nowhere near to near to near to be like homeschooling. Read the Sandra Martin-Chang study. It nukes school compared to homeschool. The most rewarding way to socialize: again read studies. Then talk - otherwise you might drive some children unknowingly into schools with their miserable socialization options.

I didn’t know that about Ben Swan! I worked in the public schools for 10 years and I’m now homeschooling my own children. I recognized that the system was so messed up and not ideal for children and I wanted more for them! I taught children with learning disabilities & the biggest irony was that they had (by law) an “Individualized Education Plan” but were expected to pass the same standardized tests. It broke my heart to see them struggle to learn unnecessary things & memorize facts they had no meaning. My younger ones were so eager to learn to read then by 4th grade their desire to learn dwindles & it turns into trying to motivate them.

This video is one of the most informative encouraging videos I have watched in a long time. I am homeschooling my children within the new school year due to the fact that I will NOT have my 11 year olds thrown into middle school with the language, low family values and other issues that seem to occur on a daily basis in the public school system. I have seen more focus this past year on fund raising products and book sales than I have on the best interest of my children. I have also spent up to 3 hours each evening helping my children complete homework every day , we don't mind homework but to me that is an extreme after sitting in a classroom all day before that. As far as socialization there are great activities for homeschooled children such as sports, arts, community activities and more. The main complaint that my children have had from being in public school is that they cannot focus on what the teacher is telling them due to the interruption of others in the classroom. Everyone is different and I believe that no one knows your child better than their parent.

We homeschool using a Montessori/Reggio based philosophy along with outdoor learning/forest school. We mainly learn outside but also learn inside. And even though both of my sons have a disability, my 5 year old is also nearly fluent n ASL and is able to communicate most of his needs in Spanish as well. We study geography and culture, sciences, music, history, language, sewing, things that for some reason are not introduced at this age where it can be absorbed and manifested into part of their understanding of the world. we attend forest school , meetings with kids ages 3-12 with no toys; just play and imagination. We only started homeschooling because because my son was not able to attend public school safely and efficiently due to his needs. But when providing him extensive information and concepts in fun play experiment based ways, letting him pick his activities or topics of interest, letting him and inspiring him to inquire and document his experiences using art and manipulatives, while allowing frequent sensory breaks for his SPD, he is thriving. The same child that I was told needed medication if he was ever going to do ok in school. (He still may need medication one day, but it will not be for the comfort of a school system. It will be for HIS benefit)

As a first grade teacher, I teach by giving students tools (some physical, others invisible), inspire them to love learning, then get out of their way. Lower performing students need and desire my support more frequently; however, the on level and higher level students work independently and in small groups which check in with me as needed to insure understanding and accountability. This gives me time to work with students who are struggling and/or others who need to catch up on lessons due to absences.

The reason they do that because they think most of over weight kids are likely to get bully a lot so they dont want their only son experience that,thats why they homeschooled him at home amd hire private tutor to teach him

That’s a valid point and this can seemingly prevent students from committing suicide because of being bullied by other students at school.

Agree but also time to acknowledge and make that privilege check - parents who take up two jobs or more do not have the luxury of time or resources to homeschool. Many countries offer free education which is why people send children to school, in some of the third world countries children go to school so that they get a midday meal. Homeschoolers can go to top universities - yes and its okay to graduate in an okay/good school or okay/good university, not necessarily top and actually learn things from your syllabus, and from in and around your world - be it traditional school or homeschooling.

I see kids stressing about going to school because they don't understand our children's. Every opportunity is a learning lesson, at home, at the park, at the store, etc.

It might indeed be the right thing to do, IF parents are educated and IF parents have time. Unfortunately, more and more couples have to both work in order to feed and clothe their children (and there's also a lot of children that don't have the chance to live with both their parents). I think homeschooling might be a good thing but it must not be opposed to traditional system. The education system might be weak or unfair in the us or in china, but don't forget that public schools were created in order to provide equal chances for every child (though, i won't say it's perfect). If homeschooling was to become the norm, it would mean greater inequalities in education. Other points: -the large majority of online class you talked about are in english -the homeschoolers you're talking about were not really teach by their parents (geniuses self-educated and private teachers) -android is a bad choice for the learning system. OS and applications should always be free in that context!

Schooling was created to control the future, control thinking and what information is known. At least in the US, they don't teach you anything of substance. Everything is about passing standardized tests. No creativity, no individuality and little put to long term memory. Now some schools are better then others, but the reason why public school started had more to do with control and less to do with actually education of the masses. It's sad but interesting, the history of it all.

@Rochelle Murdock I am interested in other children's wellbeing as well as my own children's and I think you should be, too. However, I do understand that if the choice is between 'sacrificing' your own children's education and prioritising it, you would naturally choose to prioritise. It seems to me that homeschooling is insufficient and we need to be more creative in coming up with a situation where you don't feel compelled to disregard other children's wellbeing in favour of your own.

I am homeschooling my two boys after our once beautiful middle class neighborhood and the local school got infiltrated by low-income families with the majority of them who are dependent on government assistance. This is not the sin. Unfortunately many of the families are broken, the children are being raised by grandparents and foster parents and the students have behavioral problems, they are aggressive and all they know how to do is to survive, education and love is not at the forefront in their lives. These kids come to school and they take it out on their peers. My Kindergarten child and my gifted 1st grader were learning how to fight, and cuss merely to protect themselves. They were not learning anything but how to survive in a jungle! Is this the world class socialization my boys should learn? Now you may say well move to a better neighborhood-I live in the SF Bay Area and to afford a home within a district where my children can receive the education that they deserve my husband and I would have to make over $350k a year. I would have to commute and spend 3.5-4 hours on the road away from my family. To give my children the BEST possible education I am homeschooling them. There is not a teacher in the Antioch Unified School District from my experience who can provide the dedication and attention my children need. Having worked in the classroom and for the district.

Ok, after reading the comments I was surprised to only find himeschooling endorsing comments, so I'm gonna be the negative voice her. The problem not addressed in all of this comments is social equality. I myself have for the advantage of being part of an academic family, And I can see the difference between me and other people in my class even now. Not that academic background is essential, but it is definitely and advantage. Now imagine a time were all those academics hommeschool their kids. With time we would create a two class system, with homeschoold children at the top and normal schooled children at the bottom. All the advantages of technology can also be used in normal schools, with lots of induvidualisation. So we could get really god education for everyone and not only for those that have the right parents! Ofcurse as the school system is broken right Now, I don't have a problem with anybody who homeschools, but they should still work to make homschooling unnecessary.

I have a concern for those people who have negative thoughts about kids would have only 50% percent of social aspect be developed if they would have homeschooling... You know what? Out of five aspect you only concern about the one, but how about the four aspect remained? this four aspect could also the child develop their social aspect in any form. Its a matter of strategies and styles. Like what the two young ladies who have been homeschooling they have the KUA (Knowledge, Understanding and Application) strategy that would help though.
@seryikrolik

Mr Steimle, I have no doubt that homeschooling is a good decision for your own children, but what about loving families where both parents are working flat out to make ends meet, or caring families where one or both parents have a chronic illness and struggle to meet their children's basic needs, or families where there is discord and school provides a welcome escape from the stifling atmosphere at home, or single working parent families, or any other family which doesn't have at least two adults on form and in harmony? And isn't that the vast majority of families? What about society as a whole when some children are home schooled and others aren't? Aren't you proposing, in effect, a two-tier education system, where children of successful, intelligent, coping parents are able to enjoy a superior education right from the start and thus be better placed to receive a higher education and pass their skills on to their own children and feel no responsibility towards anybody else's children? Isn't that kind of education exactly what the Western world has poured the last hundred years of time, effort and finance into overcoming? If we are capable people then don't we have a responsibility towards children that extends beyond our own front door? These are the questions I hoped to find answers to in your talk, but you didn't even address them. I would be very grateful if you or anybody else with a constructive suggestion would answer my comment and take it seriously. Thank you in advance.

Joshua is happy with his choice, but his children have no choice, in fact they are held backstage. We do not hear their thoughts or expressions about being academically trained at home. Joshua misses one other big question about homeschooling; Can't this parent guided and regulated education confine the child to one demographic with limited human experience in the diversity of society? Any homeschoolers can also sign up with a local school for added experiences that would develop a citizen with world class awareness of others. Any homeschoolers should read from John Holt, especially Escape from Childhood. He is a very popular author among homeschoolers, but many may not have read this book, urging the gradual independence of the child toward adulthood. Any homeschoolers of young children should read Maria Montessori, especially Montessori in the Home, The Absorbent Mind, The Secret of Childhood. She founded the self guided method of education with her Children's House in 1907. By the age of Three children are aware of themselves as individuals, seeking independence, and able to exercise executive function toward their own learning. Homeschooling should be aware of this and many modern understandings of the brain, including the importance of movement in learning. For this read Adele Diamond, Jane Healy, and pick up on Storytelling as Teaching by Kieran Egan. This message is brought to you by a teacher. Please do not generalize about our profession. The most innovative practices are developed by teachers in Independent Schools!

What would you call a weird child? The 5 yr old who held a political conversation with a group of adults before this last presidential election, and left a grown woman who spent 40 yrs Workin with in the political system speech less and out debated. Yet said child did it with the upmost respect. Is that weird because that's what my homeschooler did at our family reunion! Is it weird that my newly 6 yr old can go into a store and purchase needed items with money. She can make the list, go in and retrieve the items, stand in line fairly patiently, take out the correct amount of money and purchase the items, she usually knows about how much change she should have left before she is totaled out, and then she can get home and cook with the groceries she bought. Obviously, I supervise this but she can effectively communicate with the people she comes in contact with, make real life interactions, and complete real life skills..... So yeah I guess she is kinda weird but we like her that way...

I am not sure.... There is a lot of contradiction with this presentation. It could also be a myth that children would meet other children when they are homeschooled. Besides, not all parents can educate their children at home and many do need to work somewhere. Not all parents have the patience to stand children all day long at home, and private tutors might no be affordable for many for that matter....and they might not the appropriate ones as well. Furthermore, how do you know they are teaching the right thing to your children? And what they do at home, they can also do it after school. So, I wonder what is the advantage of that.
