The new Deposit Return Scheme for plastic drinks bottles and aluminium cans launches today - but how will it work?

Recycling bottles and cans will pay off from today.
The Deposit Return Scheme is now live nationwide and will see people get money back for plastic drinks bottles and aluminium cans.
When you buy a drink in a plastic bottle or aluminium can with the Re-turn logo, you will pay a deposit in addition to the price of the drink.
When you return your empty, undamaged container to any participating outlet, you get your deposit back in cash.
A deposit of 15c will apply to containers from 150ml to 500mls, while a deposit of 25c will be out on containers between 500ml and three litres.
Consumers will receive their deposit either through a Reverse Vending Machine (RVM) or over the counter.
RVMs will issue a voucher that can be redeemed at the till against store purchases or as a cash refund.
People are advised not to crush or squeeze the plastic bottles and cans.
Minister of State for the Circular Economy Ossian Smyth said the scheme is a 'once-in-a-generation' development.
"This is an exciting, new initiative which will boost recycling rates, greatly reduce litter, and improve the environment," he said.
"It will get bottles and cans off our roadsides and beaches and contribute to the circular economy by turning waste drinks containers into new bottles and cans.
"We know deposit return schemes work - they operate effectively in over 40 countries around the world, including 15 in Europe, where the average EU collection rate is 92%.
"By giving these containers a financial value, it incentivises consumers to return them.
"The Deposit Return Scheme is a once-in-a-generation development for the Irish beverage industry," he added.
From June 1st, all stock not branded with the Re-turn logo will be phased out of shops.

You pay for a recycling bin for recycling. I agree though that private industry should pay or/and subsidise our recycling household waste. At the end of the day the majority if the packaging used is not recyclable. So private industry should pushed towards eco friendly packaging.

Bins use to be free in Ireland, then we got local property tax, then bin charges, now this tax. They want homeless to collect them like you see in America. This is a tax that hits the poorest! Shame on the government. I use my Green bin already.

I use my green bin and used to wash everything first out of respect for what I thought would be people handling it. I didn’t realise 80% was incinerated and sold back to us as electricity.

Not going to solve street pollution as people who consume drinks on thr street are not going to take their bottles or cans home until the next time they go to a supermarket for the sake of 15c. They'll just dump them. It would be far better to have public recycling bins on streets so people would have a place to dispose of them. This does not solve that problem

@@eoinf2773 Thanks Eoin for that. It's a decent government initiative imo. Fairly tired of the constant negative reactions online. I've seen the success this scheme abroad and its only a win for our society even if its a small one. People can see my comments here, it's not supposed to be an echo chamber.
