It’s funny how over the seasons that they forget that she was a queen, because when she was trying to save her daughter from them, they didn’t let her have a say because Xena wasn’t a queen, but Gabrielle could have a say and even fight Varia for the throne…I’m sure that wasn’t the only time that it was forgotten about her being queen during the seasons…

Rewatching this, I now realise Velasca's hatred towards Xena - it wasn't because of Gabrielle - it was because she had just as much right to the crown as Gabrielle.

If Velasca was only a foster daughter of Melosa, she wouldn't necessarily have the same caste ranking as Melosa's presumably blood sister and "true heir" Terreis. As she was dying Terreis gave her Right of Caste to Gabrielle, so Gabrielle inherited everything tangible and intangible that Terreis had possessed, which included not only being an Amazon but next in line to the queenship if Melosa never bore a daughter. When Velasca turned into a serpent's tooth and slayed Melosa, she gained the regency...colloquially being the "queen"...in Gabrielle's name. She thought that Gabrielle would meekly make this official and quietly go away, little dreaming that Gabrielle had a spine of steel to go with her abs and was fully prepared to rule as Queen when she thought that Xena was dead.

The title is a bit misleading because Melosa clearly said only another Amazon can challenge her and that’s why they signaled Gabrielle to do it so Xena could fight her since she lacked battle experience for it to be a fair fight. Plus it was the only way Xena could stop his execution since Melosa wasn’t willing to hear her out and stay the execution. When Xena won Gabrielle became Queen and the ending showed Melosa was able to stay Queen suggesting that Melosa was her Regent. I’m assuming Gabrielle handed back the Crown without incident since she didn’t have the official coronation until Destiny as she still considered Melosa the true Queen until Velasca killed her and she realized she could embrace that title so probably didn’t want the title just wanted the Challenge to help Xena stop their war against the Centaurs. Although technically Ephiny could’ve just issued the challenge to Melosa as the later rules said another Amazon can issue the Challenge but in this case they probably just wanted Gabrielle since she was a main character since this is the only time they mentioned that it had to be an Amazon of Royal blood. That’s why Gabrielle mentioned “I’m an Amazon Princess you can’t deny me,” so I don’t think they established the Amazon rules yet which is why it changed later on lol

@@TheXander360 But those were not the rules in Xena. You beat the queen of the Amazons the Amazon issuer is the winner if they win. Xena was never an Amazon. She killed the leaders of the Northern Amazons not because she issued a challenge, but because Alti said if she did she would get the power to become the Destroyer Of Nations with her help. That's why when Melosa dismissed Xena when she challenged her she told her, "only if it's made by Amazon Royal Blood," after Xena told her the challenge had to be honored. That is why when Xena gestured Gabrielle with her facial expressions to do it. Since Gabrielle issued the challenge Xena fought in her place, which is why Ephiny also said "choose your weapon or choose your champion." Xena won but that made Gabrielle Queen since it was under those Amazon Laws she was allowed to fight in her place. Notice also that Xena has never been mentioned as a Queen or an Amazon even in future episodes when she's excluded from Eve's Rite of Caste ceremony and Varia's coronation as Queen. They clearly state "the ceremony is Amazon only." Even Steven Sears one of the producers stated that Gabrielle became Queen after this battle. You can actually find it on Whoosh. :D

That's also why they always referred Gabrielle as the true Queen when she came back in The Quest, which was why Velasca was upset because Gabrielle had the rite of caste. They even mention how Xena is not an Amazon in future episodes, which is also why they had Gabrielle issue the Challenge had Xena fight in her place and why Gabrielle also led the Amazons in To Helicon and Back and Varia and Xena even clearly said she was not able to see the coronation of Varia being Queen because Xena was not an Amazon lol.

@@TheXander360 According to Steven L Sears, who wrote Hooves & Harlots and The Quest, there was controversy among the Amazons whether Velasca had properly challenged Melosa to fight; evidently an Amazon can't just sneak up and assassinate the queen and claim the throne. While he didn't go deeply into this it seems that while Velasca apparently challenged Melosa there were no witnesses as to the beginning of the fight, only the end result, so that's why Velasca insists that it was "fair combat" while Ephiny wasn't so sure.

Melosa tried to kill Krykus with it by forcing it against his throat before Xena stopped her. Also, she could die from blunt force trauma and be beaten to death by it. Remember how Ephiny showed Gabrielle how to kill a centaur with a staff? I’d imagine with enough force you could just daze or knock someone out and just get hit repeatedly by it to The point where you die especially if you’re unconscious and can’t fight back.
