I've heard that a great way to eventually end up in a sports position is to work in data for a non-sports business first to legitimize yourself and then transition to sports. Have you seen this and would you recommend?
@KenJee_ds4 жыл бұрын
I think it really depends on what type of position you want to get into and at what level. In my opinion, the best way to prepare for a sports analytics role is through doing sports analytics (projects, internships, working for a university team, etc.). If you are applying to manage a team or work on the strategy side, bringing in skills legitimized through non-sports roles is a perfectly viable option. What degrees would you recommend I wanna be someone who works for MLB network or a sports reporter. 2 is it a good career for someone who loves the sport and understands the analytical part of it? Because I feel like I would loveba job like this. 3 is it worth it because people say working for MLB is a very competitive industry and I don't want to make mistakes. Thank you for reading hoping to hear soon!
@KenJee_ds3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! I'm not as familiar with the media side (my work is on the performance side), but I can still try to answer those! In general, the best thing you can do is build up a portfolio. If you want to be a reporter, that means accumulating experience as a blogger, on your schools tv channel, on youtube, etc. With that media experience, I recommend combining it with something that helps you to tell a story better. For a lot of people on the tv side, that is their experience playing the game at a high level. Another angle would be having inside info (like woj) or exploring the analytics a bit deeper and being able to integrate that into your segments. I think it would be a good career and is definitely doable, but it would require a lot of work! Admittedly, pay in sports is lower because of the demand, so that is something to consider as well. I think you should follow your passion in this domain. If it is what you want to do, at least try for it and see if you like it! Hope this helps!

Hello Ken, thank you for everything you are making on KZbin. It has been extremely helpful. I was wondering, could you go more in-depth into what data scientists for NBA teams are currently working on? I have trouble knowing what projects could create value because clubs seem to protect all of their in-house work.
@KenJee_ds5 жыл бұрын
Hey - Thanks for watching the video! What NBA teams look at can vary greatly. If you look at the rockets and the warriors of 2019, they both won in very different ways. The rockets created opportunities with mismatched isolation plays (Harden), and the warriors created opportunities through ball movement. Both of these teams are highly analytically advanced. The holy grail for basketball analytics, is to be able to value players (in dollars) for how much they contribute to a team winning. This can be approximated in various different ways (adjusted +/-, win shares, etc), but none of these approaches are truly specific to how the team plays the game. If you can create an analysis that shows why specific players would be more valuable to the team than others, that would really turn some heads. In addition to this, teams are always looking for actionable ways to improve performance with they players that they have. If you notice a trend when certain players are on the court, or when players take certain shots, run certain plays etc, that can help optimize a team's performance. Aside from this, data scientists do a decent amount of bi reporting for the teams. If you are struggling with some of the more advanced ways to create value, you can still get recognized by creating practical visuals that illustrate interesting points. I am releasing a video tomorrow about books to read to get into the field. There are a few ones there that focus on basketball and would definitely help you think about this more. Hopefully this was helpful and I didn't ramble too much!

Hey Ken! I just thought of the perfect job for me last night. Doing something in analytics and bjj if I could find a way to get paid and do both that would be legit! Have you seen analytics and bjj together being used anywhere?
@KenJee_ds3 жыл бұрын
Have not yet, but I would love to. I think a first step could be working with fighters or the UFC and eventually bleeding down to BJJ itself. There is a book called Fightnomics that is a really good start I think! Happy to work on a project related to bjj with you though!
@abediaz67073 жыл бұрын
@@KenJee_ds I will definitely check that book out! I actually am working on a bjj project now well 2 actually. I’m taking all of my recent tournament data and looking todo some analysis in R. Also, just for fun I will be doing the same thing but in SQL. The other project is taking my past 6 months of data once I’m done collecting videos and making that in a viz in tableau. Ideally, I would like to show how I’m doing with various moves against different belts. Any help you or guidance you could provide would be amazing 🥲❤️

Hello, I completed my Bachelors Degree in IT from India but I really don't like coding...is there way to get into Sports analytics without coding or I must do coding. Because I don't want to coding all my life. Sports analytics is interesting. What can I pursue if i really hate coding? Note: I got 98/100 in Java in academic course. But I don't like now. Sports analytics intrigued me because it showed me direct application of what I have learnt in my academics...and I am afraid to get into data analytics/science just because it has coding? How should I start ? Should I really do a formal 1 or 2 years Masters degree or just enroll for online courses? Can you specify some courses to get started?

Hi Ken, thank you very much for this video! Very informative! I've been exploring data science for a few years now, and I believe I have all the skills necessary (R, Python, SQL, PowerBI, statistics,...). I would love to get into the sports analytics field professionally, but I haven't found the right channels to do that yet. I'm also in the Chicago area, so I was wondering if you have any specific tips to network with people in the sports analytics field? In your experience, what are some of the interesting organizations in the IL area and how would you recommend approaching hiring decision makers?
@KenJee_ds4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! By far the best place to network for these positions is at the sports analytics conferences. There is one at MIT Sloan, and they are also having one at University of Michigan these days. I also recommend trying to maybe do some zoom informational interviews with people that you find on linkedin. It can help you get a foot in the door if you have done some interesting projects that could be relevant to their work or teams. I know that STATS LLC is located in Chicago, and some of those guys would probably be more than happy to share their experiences. I hope this helps!
@RubenB12344 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much for your feedback! I'll definitely need to look into some of these conferences that you mentioned, and I'll browse around on LinkedIn to see if I can find any people who would be willing to give me some information. Thanks again for your videos! Please keep 'em coming, cause they are really interesting and helpful. I wish you a lot of success with building out your channel! If I could give some suggestions for video ideas, maybe you could do a video on what a project portfolio looks like (how many projects, which topics, which techniques, etc...)? Or maybe you could do an interview with someone in your network about their experiences in the field? Just some suggestions for you to do with whatever you want. Thanks! Ruben.

You know what I hate about modern day sports analytics? You got all these terms that never existed like 10 or so years ago in sports with strange names that are hard to figure out what they even mean. Yet people continuously write articles referencing them as if the average sports fan already knows what all these are and they're self explanatory even though they clearly aren't and it's fancy jargon that you have no clue what it could possibly mean. Like I was reading an article talking about Breonna Stewarts win shares in her WNBA career. Nowhere in the article did it explain what win shares mean. Obviously it has to do with wins. But beyond that I have no clue. Then there is this other one that has defense or defensive in the title I can remember the full name of the stat but it's a really strange name. It's mentioned all the time as if it's common sense to what it means and we should already know. Lol. Nobody ever explains these things as if they're normal stats. Lol.

Like Mourinho, he was far ahead of the pack and now he is not. His teams always works from defensive solidity. It is like the walk of China and then with amazing players offensively they will get it done. You need more elaborate running between players in the same team so they can pass the ball blind in a room. So they know that teamate is in this Even without watching. Not many teams are able to do it. Most teams in England not and so many old coaches. It takes time to build something like this and how can you do it faster
