Try filling the prepared cup with propane gas, which will focus the plasma. You could also use silicon carbide and water glass to form a container instead of a glass. Carbide draws microwave but melts lower than ruby, so watch how long you expose it! I use Kwool insulation to make a container for the whole experiment, You could easily melt stainless steel depending on how much is attempted. Using carbide, the size and wattage of the oven comes into play, Mine is a 1200 watt one from a thrift store and melts metal quickly. Smaller units limit the top temp attained.
