Pageants are a HUGE part of Philippine culture. Historically, pageants were introduced to the Philippines from colonial times -- Spain (330 years) and US (45 years and ongoing) -- so that a Catholic event, the "Flores de Mayo" is technically a pageant showcasing beautiful women from (and outside) a borough or town parading as representations of characters from the Flores de Mayo story. Official pageants were introduced by the Americans in 1908 through the Manila Carnival Queen. And since then, Filipinos' passion for pageants have just grown especially because of the existence of international pageants major and minor ones. This pageant craze is not just for adult women competing for international pageants, but pageants also exist at schools (for young adults and girls) and even at work. Also this pageant craze is not just for women, but also for men. The role of gay men should also not be ignored -- not only are gay men avid fans but they are also trainers and brutal critics of pageant contestants. And now you actually see that pageantry has become part of if not separate from the entertainment industry which is huge. So overall, there is a self-sustaining pageant ecosystem in the country. It is embedded in the culture -- there is a "customer" or consumer as everyone loves pageants and contestants, and there are "sellers" as there are endless numbers of contestants, as well as trainers, gownmakers and makeup artists (who are predominantly gay men), and beauty products, not to mention media support. In Philippine culture there are three sacred "B's" -- basketball, boxing, and beauty pageants. The huge appeal of pageants lie within the idea of "aspiration" -- any Filipino who wins big in an international pageant becomes a national hero and a celebrity, and with fame comes endorsements, and a career in showbusiness.

I paused this video and wanted to find a compilation of your full performance in Miss Universe 2016. First off, you look so beautiful (of course) and I honestly can't believe people would criticize your physique. Yes, you may be a little bit thicker than majority of Miss Universe contestants but I LOVE THAT ABOUT YOU. pia during a radio interview reveals how the filipinos trained to be miss universe. Trained to walk in 5 6 inches heels. Go to the gym 3 times a week. Moniter your eating. Constantly look up on the news, about whats going on in the world. Pia also says they get put into a room where they train their q&a. when its pias turn. she gets asked a question, if she answered well she gets to sit down. if not, she stands and waits until its her turn again. (That explains why the filipinos (minus venus raj) gave the best answer out of all the top 5) Pia also mentioned that in the phillipines. You must have a conservative background. so you cant be posing nude or sexy photos in any mens magazines. since they'll check your backgroumd.

Let me enumerate: Intelligence, wit and personality really play a big role in excelling in pageant. The rest follows. The thing about Filipinas, they're naturally elegant and confident. They've excelling in pageants since the beginning of the pageant era. Talking about Gloria Diaz, Margie Moran, Evangeline Pascual, Aurora Pijuan, Melanie Marquez, Gemma Cruz, Miriam Quiambao, and a lot more runners up. I think they got this from their Spanish Ancestors. Don't also forget we've been colonized by the Spaniards for more than 300 years,. Most of Filipinas has already Spanish blood. And also, considering that the Philippines is the melting Pot in Asia. They are so diverse especially when it comes to looks. Less than 1% of Filipinos have European heritage in them. So no, most of them don't have Spanish in them. Just because they've been colonized doesn't necessarily mean most of the population is mixed. Hi Sierra, Thanks as aways. It's important to note that the Philippines has been a interested in pageants for many, many decades - it hosted the Miss Universe pageant several times (in the 70s and 80s) and and the representatives from the Philippines used to place very well in those decades as well. So the powerhouse status is really a product of its culture. I am Colombian, and the reason Colombia does well is similar - the culture generates a big interest in selecting and preparing women well for the national responsibilities and the international stage, offering them an important platform in their country.

Hi Miss Siera pageant camps in the Ph are giving the training to their ward pro bono (most of them). Most of the trainors are volunteer people. Endorsements and benefactors are what keep the camps functioning. Many of these girls are not train for pageants only but for modelling (ramp and commercials) as well.

Local Beauty pageants here in the Philippines are all-year round. There is always beauty pageant in schools and Bario Fiesta every year😊 the secret is grass rooting, starting from childhood to adulthood.
