That is one of Liv Ullmann's specialties. She does the same thing in Persona.

they are not married, its an affair, the doctor is talking about their early years and how she used to be more innocent and candid compared to the present where she is more frigid and calculating

Ullmann herself, who had great affection for Bergman, said he was a male chauvinist, so, yeah, he would focus on the appearance of women more. Besides that, what film director wouldn’t want an excuse for a long close-up of that face?
