That is one of Liv Ullmann's specialties. She does the same thing in Persona.

I want so much to watch the film but can't make myself put it on. It has to fill the right evening. Thanks for permitting me two and a half minutes of it :-) I love that beautiful woman ;-)

i thought there was another scene probably from another Bergman film relating to facial wrinkles being caused by some character flaws.. Does anyone know what this might be or am I misremembering?

they are not married, its an affair, the doctor is talking about their early years and how she used to be more innocent and candid compared to the present where she is more frigid and calculating

Why don’t they speak of his face in minute detail? Or is the conclusion it wasn’t worth even briefly dissecting?

Ullmann herself, who had great affection for Bergman, said he was a male chauvinist, so, yeah, he would focus on the appearance of women more. Besides that, what film director wouldn’t want an excuse for a long close-up of that face?
