This is a short update on how my pregnancy with Baby Hannah is progressing. I also model how the uterus / fetus ejection reflex works using a balloon and a ping pong ball based on a video I saw recently.

Dear Andrea, I wish I had known what you know way back in my child bearing years! How wonderful that you are helping so many young women come to understand what a perfectly designed, natural function child birth is. I am so excited about Hannah's birth; and all the videos on the way surrounding your preparation for her. And the youtube baby shower will be so much fun! Thank you, as always, for bringing a smile to my face in so many ways. I appreciate all the hard work and discipline it takes to make these videos for us

There is only one thing I would add to this fantastic video.. drink plenty of water during labour no matter where you are labouring! Dehydration makes it all so much harder. I'm talking liters, not cups.

That demonstration was NOT a flop! That's one of the coolest things I've ever seen, though for me it's cool sort of in reverse. I know how the uterus and cervix work, but I had no idea a balloon and a ping pong ball could model it so well. So cool!!

I loved this Andrea I had two babies my daughter 18 years ago and my son 16 years ago and I never knew how it worked ! It’s amazing isn’t it! I hate hospitals they told me I couldn’t give birth at home because I was overweight ! I hated hospitals I was abused as a child and really wished I just did it myself after watching this. The fear of being so vulnerable again stopped me having anymore I wish I could have spoken up more at the time best wishes to you xxx

I'm so happy for you all! What a blessing this baby girl is. I know how badly you've waited for her. I loved this video and learned so much. I experienced a ("semi") emergent c-section and wonder now if it was because of the horrible hospital environment I was in. I was in labor for ever with 2 failed epidurals. The epidurals were coaxed and despite my plea for a natural birth, I felt that because I was in a "teaching" hospital that someone needed some practice and I was talked into it to "speed things along". Hence the "2" epidurals - someone obviously got it wrong. Twice. At the change of shift, the new nurse checked me (even though I protested due to increased risk of infection) and told me I was at a 4 after laboring (assisted with pitocin - yet another regret that I really feel that I never actually consented to). My previous nurse told me I was almost at an 8! How could they both be so wrong? That only heightened my anxiety and before you know it, my son's heart rate was dipping. When they "rescued" him via c-section, he had the umbilical cord wrapped tightly around his neck two times and once around his chest. He literally would've strangled if I delivered him vaginally. Your video really made me think that had I been in a more safe and reassuring atmosphere, I might have been able to have him without all the interventions I was bullied into thinking I needed. Thank you. Claudia's birth story and my son's share some parallels for sure. I'm so excited for Hannah's arrival! She is truly blessed to be welcomed by such an amazing family that will dote on her for sure. Thank you so much for your ongoing transparency. I know I'm not alone in thinking your videos are a true blessing from above... 😊❤️

So good Andrea! You mentioned genjutsu in one of your previous videos and this reminded me of that. I haven't been blessed with children yet but I don't think its ever too early to start peeling away the layers of fears and assumptions we are brought up to have about birth in this society we live in. Love what you said about the safest birth being when YOU feel safe. The fight or flight thing is fascinating! Much food for thought as always, lovely Andrea. Enjoy your refreshed sleep! I really wish I had known all this when my son was born almost 21 years ago. I had "failure to progress" which ended in a c-section but I know without a shadow of doubt that he had not baked long enough. Labor was induced because I was at my due date and they estimated him at already being 9 1/2 pounds (he was actually 11 lbs 13 oz). I knew the day of conception so add 40 weeks or subtract 12 and I came up with April 26 (or a day on either side) but they put me at April 10. I wish there was a way to see "what might have happened" if I had said no to the induction. Love hearing that little heartbeat!

Oh Miss Andrea! I so wish I had had this information when I had my 2 children!!! I had both in hospital, totally "natural" without medication, however both labors were over 9 long, painful hours. I was kept lying flat, when all I wanted to do was get up and walk. I was upset and scared, because while I had a general IDEA what was happening, I really had no clue! I really do wish I had had this information, and guidance 36yrs ago!!!! God Bless you and baby Hannah!

It's our own bodies we're talking about and yet this (how the uterus really works) is not common knowledge. It's so amazing; I just want to go out on the street with a balloon and a ping pong ball and show everybody! How I wish both my daughter and myself had had this simple demonstration years ago; knowing the body is designed to do the work as long as you feel safe would have made all the difference. Taking the fear out of childbirth is the most important work you do.

I absolutely loved this video! With my first child my in-laws took me to the hospital and completely stressed me out. I couldn't relax enough to "push" her out. I was being threatened with a c-section. My second it was just my husband and myself. I was way more relaxed and even started "pushing" without doctor's or nurses and it was so much easier. I wanted to have our 3rd (due in march) at home but my husband is very scared of the idea. I plan on doing what I did with #2 and let my body take over. Very educational and I can relate so much!

If I could like this video a million times I seriously would... this video makes 100% sense... I've been saying this since my second son, with my first I was veryyyyy naive... I've always wanted to do home births but my pregnancies were always high risk for one reason or another so I always forced to deliver at the hospital the good part is that after my 3rd baby the 2 hospitals I was between knew me and kinda let me walk around and be comfortable however I needed during and after including co-sleeping... sooooo happy I got to do that

Thank you for reminding me it's you! Yes, I woke up at 6:05 in the morning and went to the bathroom. While I was in the bathroom, I had a contraction and realized it was time. I woke Tom up and Miss Sophia arrived an hour and twenty minutes later. It was a Sunday morning and I joked that there wasn't a need for us to cancel our home church after all as there was plenty of time to clean up before church. :) (Yes, we did cancel anyway.) I was actually really glad we'd planned an unassisted birth. As fast as it happened, our midwife wouldn't have made it to us in time anyway. The hospital we've chosen to birth at is 100 miles away, so even if we'd left immediately, we wouldn't have made it. As it was, we were prepared and had the easiest, most pleasant birth.

Love your videos! I have 5 children, only 4 living my first had to be emergency c section. And with my second my son was breech I tried my best to have a natural birth! They refused me back in 97. I was so angry but glad he came fine. Then 11 years later yes I waited so long Gods plan was not in my time but his. I got pregnant with my first girl, she was positioned perfectly for vaginal birth! Yet they refused me again. Because of fear of uterus rupture from surgery. I knew they would I never had a chance. They went in took her out and you know the dr said to me your uterus didn't even look like it had any c sections at all! Oh so mad knowing I could had her natural. But looking back I would done home birth. Glad for you.

I love your videos. My first birth was induced and awful. Second baby birthed herself. Third, fourth, fifth, and sixth were all csections do to failure to progress and I always thought they rushed me. After four csections my stomach muscles are a mess and so much nerve damage. I wish I had the information you share back then. I always have this csection remorse that my babies were ripped out of me. Lots of emotional and physical pain after a csection that doesn’t go away.

You're definitely not alone in your feelings. My mom had her fourth baby by c-section and she never got over feeling like people forced her into it. She went into labor during my brother's birthday party and everyone was excited and rushed her off to the hospital. She felt like she was rushed through the whole labor and if she'd been allowed to take her time things would've turned out differently. I've heard from lots of moms here on KZbin with those same sad feelings. At least you can use your experience to help the young women in your life to avoid the same thing, if possible.

Im 13- 14 weeks along and this has been so helpful andrea x thank you x i am a very nervous person by nature so the fears of labour and having another birth with intervention scares me. (Vacuum delivery and epesiotomy) Its still feels so new to me cuz this is my second baby so i havnt built that trust in my own body to know what to do. My anxiety acts as a barrier im sure. Your advice is very helpful to just relax. Id love to sometime try a natural birth , i had an epidural last time. Its just so scary to me. But i guess you nevr know whats gonna happen xx

just curious what your plan is if something goes wrong in labor? Baby not breathing? Or like if you starting bleeding too much? I had a unplanned unassisted birth at home. We had planned to have midwife attend at home birth and she didn't make it in time. All was fine with me and baby. And honestly it was a great experience between just my husband and myself. However, I do think I would have felt nervous not having the midwife after the birth just to be sure everything was okay. She did come 20 min. After baby was born. Also, baby cried right away but we wouldn't have known what to do if he wasn't breathing. Just curious on your emergency plan.

I have a video I've done on a book called "Emergency Childbirth" by Gregory White. It's a small handbook written for policemen, firemen, etc. who might be called upon to assist a delivery and what to do in the event of any of those emergencies, such as dystocia, hemorrhage and a baby that isn't breathing. (There's no special equipment required.) I suspect that instinct would take over and you'd discover that you knew what to do after all. I was fascinated by a video I saw of an elephant that gave birth and her baby wasn't breathing. She kept working on it until it began to breath. It was a natural instinct to do what needed done. Obviously if there was an emergency, we'd call an ambulance as well as beginning whatever treatment outlined in the book. I was reading a Canadian study the other day that showed that your risk of hemorrhage is cut in half if you have a home birth as opposed to a hospital birth. (In fact, in all areas, the less managed a birth is, the safer it becomes. That's why, statistically speaking, a lay midwife is a safer birth attendant than an obstetrician.) I also have a video on the specific way we make raspberry leaf to for labor to help prevent hemorrhage. My sister and I have both used it in hospital births (in addition to all of my home births) and our post-birth blood work showed that we'd lost so little blood that our doctor said it looked as if we'd never given birth. (I didn't mention the tea, but I was happy to see the baffled look on his face!) I also have a couple of other back up herbal tinctures for bleeding along with the instructions in the handbook for how to do uterine compression (and of course the ambulance back up.)

I had my first child in 1988. I had a midwife and I was told I was crazy. I learned so much from my midwife. I had my second in 1989 and no one told me I was crazy this time other than having two babies in two years. I had my last two in the hospital but I would not give in to what I knew was best for baby in me.

This is facinating- thank you for sharing what you've learned. I wonder what your thoughts are regarding the transition period. I've always understood that when we hit that point, our brain automatically goes to, "I can't do this! I want out!". It seems strange that if we are supposed to stay calm so that our uterus/body can do it's job, why would we automatically go to that place just before our body is supposed to expell the baby? (I'm not debating the concept, I'm just mulling everything ;))
@TheMillsFamilyVlog
@TheMillsFamilyVlog 6 жыл бұрын
Dr. Odent thinks that moment of fear right at transition may trigger the final reflex to push out the baby. There's a lot of interesting information on the hormones that are happening and how they trigger everything. It's an almost universal reaction at transition. It's different than the fear that is caused by external stimuli. It's very much a response to the inward conflict. It's almost as if a woman has to give herself over to "death" in that moment to finish bringing forth life.
@cassandra5516
@cassandra5516 6 жыл бұрын
I have read somewhere that the fear in transition is (possibly) to bring us out of mentally going inward in labour mode to focusing on the outward so that we are present enough to catch the baby. It's an ancient instinct in us to be wary of predators at the moment of birth and soon after, so that rush of adrenaline is important right before the next rush of oxytocin right at the end.

@TheMillsFamilyVlog
@TheMillsFamilyVlog 6 жыл бұрын
If it feels right to push, you certainly can. That's different than being coached to push. I mentioned to someone else that it's sort of like having a bowel movement. Pushing isn't necessarily going to help and may cause some problems. However, when you've waited patiently, there's a moment when your body will either signal you to relax or to push. Whichever it is, you respond to your body's signals rather than having someone (you or someone else) telling you to push because you've reached full dilation.

My midwife always got onto me for the sounds I made.. and then told me to stop pushing while she checked the neck for the cord. I didn't want to. I've never heard an explanation for that urge. Continued prayers for safety and health. Eager for baby Hannah to make her debut. Do the kids hang around during birth or do they go to Papas? Ours always went to Memas. Our oldest daughter helped deliver our youngest son though. She adores him so much. They have a special bond.

Yes, some women do have that overpowering urge to push. I think you know what you're supposed to do when it's time. It sounds gross, but it's like having a bowel movement. You don't try to force it or you're going to cause problems, but you do respond to the urge you have whether it's too push or relax. We don't plan to send the kids anywhere, though Thomas will have his license by then so he could take them somewhere, if needed. When Eden was born the kids went to my mom and dad's house. (Mom passed away a few months later.) I wanted them home when Solomon was born, but my midwife insisted they leave. (This was before I even went into labor.) The boys all went to my friend's house, but Eden was present for Solomon's birth. When Sophia was born, the kids were all in bed asleep. About two minutes after she was born Tom went and woke them all up. It was the best morning!

Andrea Mills I love that.. having them wake up to new baby. All of my births have been evening between 4 and 6 pm. I had back labor.. could not stand being on my back or in upright position. Hands and knees 5 times. I was so thankful when hubby told the midwife not to check me any more. I hated it and made me dislike her intensely. 🙁 So excited for you to have a back at home birth.

I feel like being checked and knowing your progress is ultimately very discouraging. There's that part of me that always wants to know how I"m doing, but after laboring _without_ knowing I realize how it keeps you focused on the wrong thing and makes it harder to stay "in the zone."

This video is so on point. I researched quite a bit about some of these same things over the years and I have some many experiences (6 labors to date) that relate directly to what you are explaining! And I agree about it’s not where you birth but whether or not you feel safe. I love the idea of homebirth but it’s not for me. my home isn’t the most comfortable and safe place in my mind (Not that the people I live with are harming me or dangerous!) Bc I know that my husband and his mother wouldn’t feel Comfortable and I wouldn’t be supported they way I should and therefore would feel uncomfortable and “unsafe”. Also my house isn’t set up in a way I would feel good about birthing at home. And I don’t mind the time away to bond with the baby before all the other kids bombard me and all the noise and chaos hits. Ok end of my ramble lol! (Ps “ruptured” uterus was hilarious!)

Awesome demo!!!😀 I love these videos! I really think these videos, help that type A woman who generally an over researcher... ie. Me 😉 And I totally understand some women don't think of hospitals as safe. As someone who has medical conditions, and has had to spend way too many years in hospital, I've had to see some things I'm uncomfortable about. On general floors, intensive care units, isolation units for germs. Lol and even resuscitation. I've met and seen some of the best practitioners of medicine and some who have done very concerning things that I know if ppl knew of they would be upset and suing. So why didn't I say something?The balance is not breaking a confidence or adding additional harm and emotional pain to family members when it would not help even future wise. Also I do ever want to dissuade ppl to go to the hospital for what could be helped for ex. Stroke or heart attack in men and women. But still warning , when your talking to that person in the grocery, "ohh your going to that! Dr." When you were just warned by another medical professional that, that dr. Had a nervous breakdown in the ER. On duty. Messed up about ten patients that nurses had to practically save the lives of and change their paperwork dr. Orders! For they're own physical safety?! then when trying to get the dr. Help? The dr. Physically over powered them and ran away?!... last week. 😱just so you know when you meet with him incase he says something crazy. And he was crazy when I met with him. Also practically drooling he was on so many sedatives, I knew that look. So I warned a few patients to be careful. But he had patients lined round the hallway there was no room in the reception area. When I had my insane and last appointment with this dr.😰 When do you speak up?Potentially getting yourself on some naughty list. And when do you look at the dr. Like a fellow human being! From what I've learned dr.'s aren't allowed to be mentally sick and have a career waiting when they go back. It's too competitive in their field. Why don't we ever hear of mentally ill dr.s even during "let's talk about it" week. ? Mental health awareness month. That is the one story I'll share, and it's not the worst. But maybe the ppl on this channel who want to try to convince others what's best for them might get some insight on why someone might not trust a dr or hospital implicitly. Ppl need to think If a banker wanted to do something; say invest your money somewhere you knew was a bad investment would you let him? because; he spent soo much time, calming your fears, telling you how it is, and everything is fixable? Besides your in the safest place to do it?... And you just need to listen to him, sending other coworkers in to you to tell you what a great guy he is. You still know nothing about him he's just a suit. No you would expect the conversation to come to a close and move on and if he kept insisting to the point where he was starting to insult your intelligence?! And you tried this or at least know quite a bit about the topic and know it's a bad investment. I would think most customers would start... yelling no, no, no !!! And then you would withdraw your assets and change where you bank. Our health is so much more! important than money. Why don't we treat it the same. No one goes into the hospital without an advocate in our family. House rules! And I can't tell you how much it's saved us health wise. Not even money. Just like learning first aid we need to teach about responsible hospital use and how to recognize dangerous medical situations " in " hospital as well. Then what to do about them. The medical systems worst nightmare. Informed patients. They are taught in school patients like us are crazy and silly. But most older dr.s will never object because they've seen the power of a thinking patient. If your worried about security? Don't, no profanity! And your golden, When snapping or yelling. Then as long as when you see them you calmly smile, flash a frustrated look and look calm... slow breathing etc. They will generally take your side. They just want to know if your going to possibly go Rambo on the hospital and staff. You can even say sorry for shouting the dr. Just isn't listening to my Concerns! Or caring. And you generally see them smile and drift off. They've seen way worse. If your dressed, and not standing stark naked, one point to you in their eyes. Hope this helps someone if they're wondering if they're crazy for wanting to shout at the dr. They had last. Note: lol I always check with my designated advocate if I'm just grumpy or am I actually being treated badly? I am paying for this stress. But of course go in expecting the best. You can always snap back or put in a Complaint later if pushed to that point. If anyone has questions or questions just comment below. Sorry tonight's comment is a little ridiculous. Fuzzy brain and long day, tonight. ANDREA 🌹 Can't wait for that baby! I'm adding this video to my file for pregnant moms. That's my job I facilitate anything and everything a momma at any stage prenatal - postnatal up to age of three for baby. I help till the family has reached all their goals they gave me. Even if that's just good mental health. And then I if they want I set them up with a good nanny. Sleep and a household and Routine and surprisingly bonding between a family member and baby(especially dads) are my biggest requests. I stay till it's in place and working so I get a lot of time with "my" family's. Best job ever. But every once in a while I get a anxious pregnant mommy client. Watching, seeing and talking about these videos are fantastic! To get them ready for labor. Will definitely use this one. Thanks❤️your hard work and wisdom is appreciated.

Hi Andrea, I laughed so hard at the balloon blooper at the end of your video.That was so funny. I think you did a great job explaining how the muscles relax, the cervix flattens and the baby comes out. It makes perfect sense. I am wondering if you will allow yourself a few days bed rest after the baby comes and if so, have you made some freezer meals for Tom and the kids to make while you're resting? I know you've done this many times before but I just think you should get your rest after the baby is born. Take good care friend !

Andrea Mills I think that your experience would give mothers in labor a bit of reassurance. You've been through labor and delivery MANY times! Lol Every single time that I delivered (3), I had a nurse that didn't have any children. Believe me, with my first birth, I was so scared! She could tell me things she read in books or saw at other deliveries, but not from her own experience. I really think you'd make a fantastic midwife or a doula.( not sure of spelling). Lol

Andrea Mills so an ambulance could get you to a hospital quick enough? I thought the closet hospital was 100 miles away?
@TheMillsFamilyVlog
@TheMillsFamilyVlog 6 жыл бұрын
The closest hospital is 30 miles away. I'd rather not birth in that hospital which is why we chose to use the next one which is 100 miles away. (The closer one is more expensive, less accommodating and there have been maternal deaths/near deaths there. The further one is smaller, less expensive and my aunt is a nurse there.)

Random question: what happens if you tear in an unassisted birth?
@TheMillsFamilyVlog
@TheMillsFamilyVlog 6 жыл бұрын
If you want to, you can go to a clinic or the hospital to get stitches. In a book I was reading recently on birth in Samoa, it said that taking sitz baths in very salty water (using enough sea salt to mimic sea water) apparently heals even large tears very well without stitches. I don't have any personal experience with that, though.

I get that way when towards the end of my pregnancy I get nervous and remember "oh yeah I have to give birth and go through labor." Uhhhh! I've been through eight deliveries and I have come to the point where I tell myself... "this to shall pass." It will come and it will go and life goes on and little baby comes and you move to the next thing. The book Supernatural Childbirth was so so so helpful because it talks about through the promises of God you are redeemed from the curse and can experience a painless labor. I didn't have a painless delivery this past baby that I had but I had such an awesome calm and control and was not swallowed by any fear and was peaceful. Best labor I ever had! I would go through it again!

I don't think any of us can forget the wonderful aid medical professionals are in medical emergencies! Tom's father choked to death, which was a real tragedy, but just like most meals proceed without need of the Heimlich Maneuver, most births proceed without the need of medical care. Sometimes things happen, though. Thank the Lord for ambulances and hospitals when we need them.
