In this video, I discuss some of the risks of "advanced maternal age." This discussion by no means covers all the risks, but hopefully sheds some light on why we shouldn't lose sleep over how risky it is to have a baby past the age of 35. I also give an update on how our pregnancy is progressing and share a few of the pregnancy nutrition books I'm currently reading.

Just 2 yrs ago, ironic that cancer was in the subject as well as the name Sirus had this baby been a boy. What seemed to be a perfectly healthy happy momma is now being laid to rest with a son named Sirus. Life is so short folks. Prayers for her Family, please know you'll see them one day and never have to say goodbye again. Alive and well forever. 😢💔

My friend had her last baby at 49 (which was only her 2nd child, 21 years apart!). She had a great pregnancy, healthy baby, but her body had a tough time with delivery so she ended up with a C-section. I agree the numbers are skewed since the birth rate is higher among younger women.

Christal Zerr I agree about our children keeping us young. I have 8 children. The first I was very young. The last I was an older mom. I got pre eclampsia very early with my 8th baby. I was 16 weeks and started getting the worst headaches and my vision got bad, blood pressure 100 over 200. At 17weeks I was officially diagnosed with severe pre eclampsia. I was in the hospital more than out. I had a very good diet, I did everything right I was just unlucky. My son is now 12 and has a laundry list of medical problems. Agenesis of corpus collosum, epilepsy, ntystagmus, strabidimus, etc. He had 2 brain bleeds. But he is my miracle. Take a look at our vlogs and you'll see what a true miracle he is.

My husband and I married when I was 31. Shortly after I was diagnosed with cancer and were told to wait several years. So now, at almost 35 I have been given the clear to start trying for a baby. If I was too scared about age, we would be agreeing to be childless. So many women have babies at older ages, so we have decided not to prevent it and see what happens. You have a beautiful family! I hope the best for you during this pregnancy.

Yes indeed...I felt bad, Andrea was such a lovely lady & mother but I just feel that a womans body isn't meant to go through so many pregnancies, live birth and the pregnancies lost. Before it was anounced that Andrea was ill, I once caught myself thinking that within the last 2 years Andrea aged massively...putting on excess weight (suggesting menopause) & turning ashen grey and her face looked duller than before. It's just my opinion and my observation...and I feel sad, that she is not among us anymore! I miss her spirit & gentle, calm nature!

Blossomofmy heart She likely had cancer for some time before she became so ill. Especially when you consider that she had such extensive metastasis. She was not menopausal as she had this baby 2 years ago and was pregnant when she went into the hospital. I did notice her color and edema in the month or so prior to her passing. Both could be attributable to liver metastasis and dysfunction.

Diet does matter. It is not just about what you include in your diet that is good, like she said in this video. It also has a LOT to do with what bad things you DO also include, even if you alao include good stuff the bad stuff does so much more damage . I think her views on nutrition are false and that is very sad. In one of her husband's recent lives hes letting his less than two yr old baby , eat marshmallows. Give them broccoli at that age and no it's NOT extreme! What is extreme is giving a toddler under the age of 2 sugary foods they shouldn't be eating at all. I'll likely get banned from commenting here but I say this out of LOVE.

I also wanted to mention here that the percentages go up for older women because fewer older woman are having babies. If birthrates were the same among women in their 20s vs. women in their 40s, I'd bet the risk percentages would be similar.
@theoriginaledi
@theoriginaledi 7 жыл бұрын
Absolutely true. Maybe not quite "similar", but much closer than they appear without that consideration. Statistics are tricky things that can be twisted around to say just about anything you want them to say. You have to be super careful to examine them fully before you base a belief on them. As the old adage (attributed to many people, none conclusively) says, "There are three kinds of lies: Lies, d***ed lies, and statistics." PS Disclaimer: I never use the *** word above myself but I would normally be comfortable quoting it. However, in this case I know Andrea's kids read these comments sometimes and I don't feel comfortable "saying" it to a child.
@junbh2
@junbh2 7 жыл бұрын
How do you conclude that? Percentage just tells you what fraction of the total. It's not about the total number.
@theoriginaledi
@theoriginaledi 7 жыл бұрын
That's quite correct. My point (which, admittedly, I didn't make very well) is that the percentages come from a much smaller number of data points, which can be very misleading or erroneous. I should have said above that they MIGHT be much closer than they appear. It's hard to say for sure without further inspection because the overall numbers are so far apart. I DID, however, just look up some numbers to show the difference and I see that in the past couple of years the number of births to mothers over 40 and even over 50 has exploded. I knew that there had been a slow rise over the past few decades but now it's shockingly common. I'm not sure what year's statistics Andrea used (she probably said but I don't remember) but if it's very recent, it may be more accurate than I'd thought due to the more equitable numbers.

I actually went to medical school so I may be able to provide some information here, not about the statistics themselves -- you did great with those! -- but about why they're out there in the first place. Full disclosure, I didn't finish medical school so I'm not a doctor, which is a whole other story, but my point is that I've done a ton of medical research and I know a fair amount about medical practice, and I can tell you with absolute certainty why medical statistics are expressed in the scariest way possible. (1) Doctors need to cover every single possible negative outcome, no matter how remote, because if something happens that they didn't warn you about, you have a better chance of winning a malpractice suit against them. Positive outcomes they don't care so much about because no one's going to sue them over that. (2) Clinical research is built on the idea of counting how many times something happens, not the number of times it didn't happen. So it's more intuitive for them to say, for example, 1 out of 350 of the babies had Down syndrome, not 349 out of 350 didn't have it. It's maybe a little bit mathematically lazy, but that's how they think. (3) It's human nature to be more emotionally driven by bad news than by good, so both researchers and doctors say it the bad way around in hope that people will really internalize the risk factor and not take any chances. So the researchers get attention for their work and, again, the doctors have less chance of losing a malpractice suit. And, to be clear, you can't even entirely blame doctors for their part in the drama. Malpractice insurance is insanely expensive, malpractice suits tend to pay out unthinkable amounts of money, and there's a certain class of lawyer that thrives on building malpractice cases for people on the very thinnest evidence possible. If they DON'T cover all their bases, they're unlikely to be in practice for very long, especially in very emotionally sensitive practices like obstetrics. It sucks, but it's all about survival.
@TheMillsFamilyVlog
@TheMillsFamilyVlog 7 жыл бұрын
That's exactly why I think that doctors (and even midwives) do far too much when they attend births. They're afraid of getting sued if they don't. Even though they often cause far more new problems than they ever prevent, they can at least say, "I did all I could," which gives less room for a lawsuit.
@theoriginaledi
@theoriginaledi 7 жыл бұрын
I guarantee that's at least part of the reason, combined at times with fear. As I know you know, too many people act and speak out of fear rather than faith in God and confidence in their own knowledge and ability.

The way you presented the statistics is completely eye opening! Thank you so much for elaborating! I'd like to add also, that my mother had my sister at 40 and my sister was completely 100% fine! Also, the statistics are glazing over other reasons why low birth weight or premature labor can occur. Other factors (smoking, working conditions, etc) also add to the riskiness of a pregnancy. There is so much fear mongering centered around childbirth, it's just astounding!

I love the heartbeat at the end! 😍 My brother has Down syndrome and when I was pregnant with my first baby I had a doctor try to push me to have all the screening done. He told me I was a "negligent mother" when I turned it down because of our "increased risks". The thing is is there was no increased risk! If my bother has children then yes, he could pass an extra chromosome on but I don't have an extra so no increased risk. It was such a horrible experience with that doctor it has stuck with me. Thankfully I was educated on the topic prior to that time in my life, so I gave him what for. I feel for the women who have not had an opertuinty to learn about the risks prior and end up with a doctor like that.

Hello Andrea, my mother was 43 yrs & 9 months old when she had me. Her Dr also told her to have an abortion as it was most certain that I would be born with gross deformities or with down's syndrome due to her "advanced age". He scared her the whole pregnancy. I was her easiest birth, born within 2 hrs, and only 2 pushes (I was baby # 6). I was born healthy, nothing wrong with me. It was actually quite common for women in their 40's and even some in their 50's to have babies, way back in the "olden days" before the 60's. Most were in the small towns, as women in the big cities were more likely to be encouraged to terminate their pregnancies. My mother grew up in small towns in Arkansas, her first 4 children were born there also. Her last 2, were born in the "big cities" of Detroit, Mi, and I was born in Dallas, Tx. My you have a happy & healthy pregnancy and baby.

I had my 4th baby when I was 39 (i'm 40 now). She's 6 months old and is the most chill easy baby who nurses great and loves her big brothers and sister. We found out at birth that she has Down syndrome, as well as having a large hole in her heart (AVSD). She had heart surgery at 4.5 months old and is doing amazing! We are so thankful for our little Annabelle Faith. And our other three just adore her! The thing I want to say is that we're all so "scared" about having a baby with DS but she is an absolute joy and is perfect in every way! Thankfully We've had so much support from family, friends, doctors, community workers... But here's a scary statistic: over 90% of women who do the testing and find out they could have a baby with DS choose to (and are encouraged to) abort. So only 10% of potential babies born with DS are actually born. So if 1/100 women have a chance of having a baby with DS and only 1/10 choose to keep the baby (plus the ones who find out at birth) how many would that make of babies with DS actually born?... Like, 0.01%? I'm not a mathematician! Lol!

I appreciate you sharing because it _is_ so disheartening when people act like the value of a life is based on some sort of physical perfection yardstick. I've been reading a book about pregnancy after 35 and it's been kind of sickening how the idea of abortion is so freely tossed around in this book as if it's just "what you do" when you have a "defective" baby. It's like trading in a spouse for a better model, trading a home for something bigger and better, etc.

My dad was 50 years old and my mom was 48 when I was born! I had no birth defects, I do have medical conditions that didn't show until later in my life, and they don't know much about how I got it, if I was born with it or got it from my environment. My mom had me all natural in a hospital. My dad and mom were mistaken for the grandparents when they left because my 20 year old sister and 24 year old brother were walking out of the hospital holding me and mom was in the wheelchair with all of our things! It's possible to have children later in life, but my mom did have horrible baby blues for a while after I was born, which was a factor that the hospital staff realized when my mom came into the hospital to have me.

Love that you ran the numbers on all of those risk rates. I took a Statistics course in university where the professor started the course by announcing that there are Lies, Damn Lies and Statistics... he went on to explain that for every "statistic" there is another side to the statistic and you need to look at both sides or you're prone to lies. As for the 'risk' of multiples, as a mother of twins it is a risky proposition, but not for your health, more your mental state.

I love butter, and olive oil and i have normal weight without dieting! When someone asks about my secret i always say: when i eat a cream cake i enjoy it and don't feel bad after eating! Hope you keep feeling well during your pregnacy! Please try not to read all this risk stuff! You are healthy and pregnant now, there are always risks in life! If anything happens it's early enough to deal with it then! So just please enjoy every day with your healthy, growing baby in your belly!wish you all the best💟! You look great today btw!!

This is a wonderful video in so many ways. One of my biggest pet peeves is how the medical field tries to scare women unnecessarily. We would have much better birthing experiences if they empowered women instead. I am so proud of how brave you are to take charge of your family. By the way, I had my 6th child at 41 yrs old. She is 14 months now and a healthy,chunky, happy, firecracker! Good Luck with this pregnancy and many blessing to you, your baby, and your family.

I don't completely agree with your position on nutrition and the foods our bodies need, but I enjoy hearing new opinions! I try to be open minded, so I enjoy listening to your option without judging. Lots of what you say makes sense. Praying for your family for a healthy pregnancy and baby!!

Congratulations, Andrea. I hope all goes well. My mom had my younger brother when she was 41. He was her second child and I was nearly 10 years old. We were all so excited to have him come to our family! People would say all sorts of stuff to my mom, but she was lucky to have a great doctor who at that time had no children and his wife had miscarried several times, so he was extremely supportive of not only my mom but all his patients with high risk pregnancies, as I think any doctor should be. While 10 years earlier, I had to be delivered by an emergency C section, my little brother was born with no complications whatsoever.

I agree with you 100% on the nutrition part. I also find that study really interesting. What I think about this topic is that if you restrict your child too much, he will just have a hard time with food when you will not be there for him when he will be all grown up.

You are definitely not too old! I am 41 and sometime this year (once we get moved out of our moldy apartment!) we will move on to the next part of IVF - the embryo transfer! (We had to delay the transfer once we found out the mold was making me sick). I have three embryos - although they are babies to me! - waiting to be implanted. I hope that we are able to have several children from these! So if it works, I may be 42 or older when I have a baby or two or three!

I was 32 when I had my son and a test showed there was a possibility he might have Down Syndrome. I was counselled and decided that it was not worth the risk of the amniocentesis for a confirmed diagnosis. I was very thankful that everyone connected with the pregnancy was knowledgeable, positive, and wanted for me whatever I wanted for me and my child. I'm keeping my thoughts towards twin girls for you. :-)

Just to let you know and give your followers hope and peace of mind, ALL my babies were conceived in "advanced maternal age"! 😂 I had my children at the ages of 35, 37, 39, 41 and 43. I am 48 now. No fertility treatments needed. No complications. Well they were all c-sections but that's another story. 😉

I got pregnant at 46 with my last baby and they tried and tried to find problems with me even telling me I was positive for down syndrome. They also told me I had high blood pressure and that my baby was to big. I had A HEALTHY, NO down syndrome, no high blood pressure. I had A c-section and was back home a day after my surgery. A lady who lives next door to my husband's parents is in her 50's and still having children. I believe Drs just try and scare u so u DON'T have to many children. I had both of my girls after 35 and I did some research as well. I found the same things as you did. I did end up having hypertension a week before my first was due and since I was also having contractions my dr. had me go to the hospital. My daughter was born 12 hours later. I know you have had some issues with how medical professionals have been with you on previous pregnancies and want to say I had personally experienced about the opposite. My dr. offered the extra tests because it was routine, but wasn't surprised when I turned them down. She was part of a 5 person ob department with a mixture of dr.s and midwives- she specialized in the higher risk pregnancies (probably because she had also been an older mom...)

I had my fraternal twins at age 43 and I'm 46 now. They are perfect. I had no issues in my pregnancy. My children range from from 3 twins,7,24,and 27. I agree they did have more concerns and had more negative info. It was a hard pregnancy compared to my singles because of tiredness weight and keeping hydrated. It was difficult walking starting 7 month from pressure etc. All my children are a blessing from God. I would do it all again. The twins pop in and out of my videos on my channel lol.

Andrea, you should subscribe to and watch Noreen’s kitchen. I find that she explains the recipes she makes in a very simplified manner and “uncomplicates” the whole process of cooking (I’m not the best in the kitchen either, despite coming from a great line of cooks in my family-grandmothers and my mother). I think you’d enjoy Noreen’s content and her point of view. Her personality actually kind of reminds me of yours. Although I can no longer conceive, I still love to learn things and appreciate how much work you put into getting information out to those who need educated. Kudos to you! Your excitement over this pregnancy is so contagious, it’s really making me wish I could conceive at least one more time, but I suppose God had other plans for me.

I am 42. My last baby I had 4 years ago at the ripe old age of 38. My pregnancy was ruined by a doctor who meant well but scared me to death (I had NO info on downs at the time, but since have learned it's not that awful other than possible health issues) for most of my pregnancy because I had the screening for downs/other issues at 18 weeks or whatever time they do that (I do think it was around then though) and it came back positive for downs. I was absolutely gutted. I finally had another girl (at the time I had 5 boys and 2 girls...1 was 21 and the other was 9) and she was not going to be "normal". To top it off my first grandchild was on the way and he was perfect (which was AWESOME, but I was slightly jealous that my baby wasn't going to be perfect too) I am not saying ANY of this stuff to offend anyone but it was how I felt at the time this all occurred with the info I had been given, which was very slim. He offered abortion which I turned down and then sent me to a specialist who determined my baby was almost certainly perfect in every way. I say the whole pregnancy was ruined because I feared in the back of my mind that the specialist was wrong because I had also turned down the test to determine it for absolute sure, so he could have been mistaken. I honestly think looking back it was a way of preparing myself for worst case scenario. She was in fact perfect and healthy but I hate the lack of education in any case. At no point was I offered counseling for if he was correct or what to expect or ANYTHING. Just hey your baby probably has ds and you can abort if you like. I also ended up with high bp at the end and because my previous pregnancy had ended that way as well and my age I'm sure too (high bp that wouldn't go down and ended up with preeclampsia and induction) he went ahead and induced me to avoid any further issues. I wish I had looked for an alternative but at the time, didn't really realize there were any. Anyway, I love that you broke it down into percentages of best case scenario and wish MORE people saw things that way. After I had her I did NOT want to ever go through that fear again because supposedly if it comes back bad for something once your chance increases the next time and if you DO have a baby with downs then it's quite a bit more that the next will too. My point is, I chose not to have anymore babies pretty much because of this, knowingly putting the baby at risk I guess was more than I could take. I wish I had heard you sooner or thought of it the way you do and I may have changed my mind. I have grand babies now and so that is pretty awesome, but I'd love another of my own. Thank you for this video though. You are awesome. Sorry this was so long, I just am so glad to see someone so well informed and someone that sees things in a new way!

I am pregnant with my ninth baby. My other children are 12,11,9,8,6,4,2, nearly 12 months and all have been delivered via c section. The amount of "are you allowed to do that" people out there is staggering. Whilst I would never recommend having csections (they ain't no joke) I would say that I have recovered beautifully each time, had healthy babies, fantastic breastfeeding experiences and no downsides for ME. I have also been cleared to have this baby by my OB but I will let you know how he actually reacts when he sees me next week haha!

When I look at old family histories it's odd how much of a fuss there is today about women having children in their late thirties or early forties. Especially when people talk as if it's a modern phenomenon. Having your _first_ child in your late thirties or early forties is something that's far more common nowadays and is to some extent a modern thing, but having your last child at that age is how it's almost always been done... What do people think previous generations did before birth control? That everyone just stopped having sex once they turned 30? No, they had a baby every few years until menopause, unless they had some big health problems. Maybe a bit fewer near the end as miscarriages increase, so the exact age of the last kid would vary, but early 40s was still pretty common. The main reason we are told not to 'delay' having kids if we want them is because the risk of miscarriage increases, so if it's your first child then there is a moderately higher risk of not having any kids at all. It's a different question from whether you should have one more or not.
