Since the early days of CG Zbrush was seen as a genius 3D software that blessed CG industries like VFX and game development with its brilliant tools and features, and continued to be the only industry standard 3D sculpting till today. The thing is we have seen many 3D software over the years like Mudbox, 3Dcoat, and Blender. so is it the only industry standard and why professionals use it.

Actually i don`t think that Zbrush will repeat the story of MBox, because it`s a pioneer of 3D sculpting with many artist and studios. I wish Blender would be so optimized like Zbrush in future.

The reason IS simple the core engine was code by an old school veteran Ofer Alon work for Sega back then, it was the most stable piece of software i ever use, it's also only use voxel for rendering polygone mean you dont need a powerfull 3D card to rendering trillions of polygone , only a lot of memory and fast CPU to virtualise your model, it also able to bake higly detail normal and depht Map. Substance make the final touch of gloss you need for pbr.

The problem is that ZBrush has become increasingly dense, bloated, and counter-intuitive over the years. I've been using it for almost 23 years and have noticed that the weight of its quirky design seems to be getting just a little heavier with each version. Pixo/MAXON ditches nothing in order to please everybody and that just ends up in them having an app that feels newer in some places and far more dated, broken in others. At this point, ZBrush's selling point isn't its feature set, but its poly pushing power. That's it. The core functionality required to sculpt is pretty much universal across apps at this point. As for the poly power, one might argue that something like 3D Coat, with its ability to handle 200mil-400mil meshes, is more than enough and that ZBrush might be overkill - especially in situations where none of that detail can be used in real-time. I like ZBrush, but also kinda hate it. It was quirky and fun in the beginning. Now it's just the fastest moving fat man on the planet. Cumbersome, but speedy. That's why people still come back to it. Not interoperability. Not features. Not brand recognition. Those darn 2.5D pixols. That's it.

@@Otakubro6Well, I tried Mudbox before and after the Autodesk aquisition. The first Mudbox wasn't as smooth with many polygons, they certainly optimizied it for more polygons later on. So yeah thats that. Also the brushes weren't as developed as later on.

Z-brush has already a foot in the industry for almost 2 decades, so is hard to some other software to compete, is fast reliable and does hat it needs to do, no one is asking for more... Blender is good for sculpting but its GOOD sculpting Tools came a bit late, so it really hard to see as a competitor on a stablished pipeline. No big studio would take the risk, but is about artists , many are discovering Blender is quite good for most of the Work needed so it found a niche on that mid range. And because Z-brush is now maxxon, and their policies are affecting artists, freelancers, and studios, you can guess there will be competition to fill a gap created by these problems at least on a % .

Exactly! When they said, ZBrush came out in 2006. I was like is my memory failing me. I could have sworn, ZBrush is older than that. I just checked out some old reviews. It looks like ZBrush v1, was considered a bit of like a toy. But when i read a review for ZBrush 2.0 (from 2004), they mentioned that "many film and video game studios are now adopting the package and are scrambling to learn and integrate this new technology". So yeah, saying ZBrush debuted in 2006, is false. Edit: Later in the video they mention that ZBrush debuted at SIGGRAPH in 1999, and became popular in 2003. But why did they then say, it debuted in 2006, at the beginning of the video???

Outside of Zbrush's horrible UI, it's pretty much the only option for getting high-end 3D Sculpting done and does it extremely well! Mudbox hasn't been updated for years yet Autodesk still wants to charge you X monthly amount to use it. Blender, despite being free and has sculpting tools, that's not their major priority since it's more of a jack-of-all-trades 3D Application. More in line with Maya and 3ds Max. 3D Coat could give ZBrush a run for their money but not a lot of people and companies use it.

ZBrush is the best option overall, but its fate is doomed under Maxon's nonsense. They'll continue to stifle ZBrush's rate of innovative and growth. You can also be sure that the iPad version of ZBrush will be half-assed and overpriced as a subscription-only model. Sadly, because greed kills everything good.
