It's kind of funny, now all that tech to make muscles etc can be created easier with soft cloth physics weight maps. I did this and provided a free version of the demonstration in Reallusion's market place "Camilla Soft Body Physics." Even Reallusion didn't know the potential their Cloth Physics engine was capable of. I created/painted high resolution maps in Zbrush consisting of mostly black on the body and painted the areas I wanted to be flexible grey. AO maps are a good painting starting point since they define wrinkle area and if you first make it very dark so the white becomes grey .The movement of the character and the shape resulted in how the physical body would respond with movement. Not only that, you can use animate morphs with cloth physics (currently only works on the head/neck area) I added appendages to my Troll character, defined them to have more SSS so they look like puss-filled balloons when the light hits them from behind. Another tip, when using soft cloth, you don't need to use tessellation for displacement on the body because it adds resolution for the stretchable physics - this way you can have very realistic character skin with physics. Apply spring bones to the eyes, butt and tongue and you will have a lot of extra character in your character. So far, Reallusion's Character creator program is in the lead allowing anyone to make skin physics combined with a 3D paint program. I used either 3DCoat or Zbrush for painting. For creatures like squids, spring joints applied to the ik chain is good but if you want more skin physics, using both skin/cloth physics and spring joints the effect can be amplified so the strength has to be reduced. The solution I discovered may have made Unity's purchase look a bit foolish since now I'm telling you how to get these kinds of results.

i dropped modo do to price and the mac shift to 64bit about 10 years ago, still can't figure out blender for the life of me. I gave up on 3d modeling entirely.

Sono ancora arrabiatissimo per quello che hanno fatto a XSI ...Maya al tempo era una schifezza e anche ora va solo se riempito di plugin... ho continuato con Blender, ma SoftImage 3d e XSI erano devastanti confronto a Maya. (bastava fare un test di deformation by surface per accorggersi di come fosse lento maya). Se softimage xsi girasse sui pc odierni sarebbe ancora il migliore.

too expensive, creates rather than solves bottlenecks, plus forces closed ecosystem in terms of content and interchange between other 3D packages, the pose editor is insanely useful but as soon as another tool (powered by AI) that does the same is available, lights out for cc4.

There is new amazing methods for caustics like PSSMLT, smallUPBP, CPPM, Specular manifold sampling etc. I personally think if someone combine UPBP with SMS and main render be automatic bidirectional PSSMLT it would kill everything and if UPBP receive new samplings like in CPPM it could be used by its own completely without path tracing. I would say if we make vector merged bidirectional Primary Sample Space Metropolis Light Transport progressive chi squared unified points, beams, paths photon mapping it would be UBER method - in short VCMBPSSMLTPCUPBPPM ahahahahahh. Im real freak for caustics not gonna lie.

The worst thing for me with Mari is it’s a lot more difficult to learn. Cumbersome interface but the lack of tutorials makes it even more of a challenge. Ifyou can get over these hurdles it’s by far the most powerful tool.

Firstly great content coming from your side. I loke the videos you put together. I have dabbled in maya a bit back in the days when it was Alias and starting with Maya 4. But again i got used to 3dsmax so much and i was giving training to a lot of students back then also. Everything is so spontaneous in it while work and it comes to a point when you no more need to think about aa tool, you just go to it naturally and indeed the nondestructive workflow is awesome in max . Now i have found my second liking to cinema4d. I think you should do a feature pass on it in detail.

Might get into some of those but i dont see myself using Maya for modeling when i have 3ds Max which is unmatched in vanilla state already. For animation, rigging and grooming its a different case and i love using Maya for those purposes, especially with add-ons such as Animbot and Advanced Skeleton.

I like Mayas view port but I like 3dsmax modeling tool. Autodesl should go back to selling. If there upfatingvit yearly with new things. They will still get money from people purchasing and or upgrading. I'll buy one. But since Blender is free, I'll use that until autodesk does this.

Thanks for the awesome list. I'm surprised Turbo Tools didn't make it onto the list though, it's one of the highest rated, most reviewed, and most developed addons on the Blender Market. It's the only addon I couldn't live without.

Blender seems perfectly adequate and I'm also noting that users claim that it's better than alternatives like 3ds Max and Maya. However, when you've spent a decade or three working within a UI that's somewhat standard across multiple suites, you find Blender's uniqueness as the primary reason why the industry has refused to adopt it. Mastery of a particular system doesn't happen overnight so you're basically having to choose between resetting your art pipeline, losing productivity in the process, or staying the course. The old adage, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it", applies here, especially when the cost effectiveness of a free, albeit a reportedly formidable, product would cost exceedingly more up front for down time due to having to retrain everyone along the pipeline to work with an entirely unique solution. For artists who have already mastered 3ds Max or Maya, for example, basically being asked to throw everything they know about 3d content creation out the window is an unreasonable ask.

CC is great for game resolution characters, the workflow is fantastic with a few quirks, and is heavily burdened with a confusing monetization scheme. I wish they added an option for a higher poly base, as the subdivided characters look quite "soft" and unrealistic and need more geometry to support higher fidelity. I would like to see a poly density for the base mesh similar to 3dscan store or metahuman, it would open up many possibilities. Ideally the meshes would degrade gracefully in resolution from a higher poly mesh somewhere around 50 - 100k quads. From a single cinematic mesh the resolution cascade would look like Cinematic > CC4+base(the highest resolution right now) > Game Optimized (CC game base) > INSTALOD (LOD1-3+). Taking time and workflow complexity out of the equation metahuman and even Daz offer more realistic charcters. Character Creator has the best workflow, but is the weakest of the three for cinematics and higher quality character animations.

3ds Max gotta be the greatest piece of shit in the industry of both games and movies outside modelling. Yeah it's the king for archviz but it's already obsolete for both games and movies, the few studios left using it have so many plugins and own scripts that it can't be considered 3ds Max anymore...

Yeah sort of true. I think it's because some areas of blender are under developed and people really want it to be as close to a specialised software. In this example people are trying so hard to make Blender feel like marvelous designer.
