I love the true-believer , brave interpretation of Daphne, it makes the team dynamic better , also I see her as the best (human) friend of Shaggy, I always saw her as the one who understood and connected the most with him and Scooby, that is why despite its flaws, 13 ghosts worked for me as a kid.

I just realized this is why I find Daphne in most modern interpritations to be less interesting than I thought about her in the Real Monsters movies. She has a purpose in the group, she was trying to get a big story about some monsters. It's sad that it only really works with a real monster universe cause she'd look like a goofy conspiracy theorist if it was her thing in the "masked phony" series.

I have that series. It's awesome. AND there is now a NEW SD movie called The 13th Ghost, which I also have & it is awesome as well! Vincent Price has reprised his role in it, too, which thrills me! I love Vinny!! Btw, I am writing this B4 this video has ended, so if these things are discussed, this will be embarrasing! Ok, so you are a 13 Ghosts hater! I LOVE IT! It's silly & I love that! (like you are NEVER silly, huh?) Eh, agree to disagree. And captions on most things EVER are crappy! I still love you tho'. And I love your cat, Sparta a WHOLE LOT! He is awesome! If it makes you feel better, I really don't like A Pup Named Scooby-Doo. A bunch of little kids instead of my beloved teenage mystery solvers. It was just boring to me. Well, see ya on the next one!!! Can't wait!!!

@@beverlykrebs4372 It's sad to say but Vincent Price definitely didn't reprise his role in the 13th Ghost movie that came out a few years ago. Vincent Price died in 1993. He is my favorite actor though. Pretty much the only thing I liked in the 13th Ghost movie was that they hired someone who sounded a LOT like the real Vincent Price to voice Vincent Van Ghoul. I loved the 13 Ghosts of Scooby Doo series, (I just didn't think the movie lived up to the series) Vincent Van Ghoul along with Rattigan from The Great Mouse Detective were my first introductions to Vincent Price. Mystery Incorporated they had Vincent Van Ghoul show up as a horror movie actor who starred in Scooby and Shaggy's favorite horror movies and that episode with him had numerous references to Vincent's filmography.

@@Nightman221k oh no! Thank you for letting me know! It sure did fool me! The guy certainly did sound like him! I should have known V. Price wouldn't still be alive. Just didn't put too much thought into it. I agree that he was amazing in The Great Mouse Detective. We have that movie & we even watched it recently. Such a well-written animated movie. They don't make 'em like that anymore, in my opinion. I did watch the Mystery Inc. series. Most of it anyway. Before the end we had some huge medical bills so we stopped our tv service. I recently bought the "Be Cool, Scooby- Doo" 1st ssn on dvd. Those are some of the most cleverly written & hilarious episodes of any SD ever. I can't wait to get ssn 2 when they release that! Yay!!!!

I'm honestly torn. I love Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island, which revitalized the franchise... unfortunately it just lead to more movies that fall back into the same tired routine that got old long before I was born. The only worthwhile things that came out of this revival - in my opinion - are Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island, Scooby-Doo and the Witches' Ghost, and Scooby-Doo Mystery Incorporated. Oh, and that crossover with Supernatural.

honestly, I think it's a mistake to lump in every movie together. obviously if you don't want to slog through all of them to find the gems then you don't have to, but it's also important to recognize artistic merritt when it presents itself. one of my favorite pieces of scooby doo media is "legend of the phantosaur," which has a much heavier focus on the gang as _people_ while also pulling no punches on the comedy aspect. the movies are pumped out like a conveyor belt but different people work on every one and it shows. when you put people who genuinely care in the right positions at the right time you still end up with an amazing product. in fact, the movie that came out this year was pretty damn good. it's called "happy halloween scooby doo" and it was run by the same creative mind behind the grimm adventures of billy and mandy. this video goes into more detail about those two as well as talks about Many More scooby related media that you may or may not be familiar with ! kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y6vap6qHaceVes0

I literally love everything about this movie. The artwork of the movie is the best of the entire series. I love the character development, especially Daphne. She went from being pretty much useless in the original series, with her only purpose was to get captured, to bring practically the leader of the gang in this movie. The setting & plot is unique, the villains are interesting, to the point where I’d even watch a movie just about their backstory. This is why the “sequel” is so offensive. It’s not only bad, but it actually insults the fans of the original.

It is actually a bit suprising but I remember that scene where the zombie hands Shaggy the wine and was confused even as a child. It just didn't fit the rest of the scene even if it was a joke I had seen millions of times. There was something..different..about it..and I think I just realised what it is that stands out about it..the zombie..isnt being made fun of. Usually in these jokes it is obvious that the monster is just confused. He isn't helping Shaggy or whatever because he truely want to help them. He is being tricked into it or just kinda going with the flow untill he realise he has been had and then proceed with the chase. Or in some rare cases he helps them..then looks a bit around before he starts the chase again seemingly just forgetting he was trying to harm them...Non of these things happen here. It is played as a joke but the zombie hands Shaggy the wine and then..doesnt do anything but let him leave with Scooby. That was what stood out to me as a child. They actually rewrote even this old joke just enough to make it obvious that this was only meant to be seen as another one of their silly jokes but was actually a clue.

My favorite thing is that this wasn't just a one time shake up. Though as time went on the trend would fade a bit, for a while there Scooby Doo movies would go back to the formula, except that somewhere near the end there would be a reveal that the monster they found wasn't real, but the real one is definitely out there. Some examples include "Scooby Doo and the Alien Invaders" where at the end there are real aliens, "Scooby Doo and the Loch Ness Monster" where the final scene as they are driving off from a mystery well solved features the real Nessy giving a cameo to Scooby, and in "Chill Out Scooby Doo!" where the yeti that had been terrorizing them ends up fake, but it is heavily implied that after the final action sequence Scooby and Shaggy are carried down the mountain to safety by the real one.

"Scooby-Doo and the Cyber Chase" (2001) This 4 movies are the best entires of the Scooby-Doo franchise. Zombie Island is the best. Witch's Ghost is underrated. Alien Invaders is a good romance movie. I was. 8 or 9 when the 1st episode of SD was aired in the 60s, & I watched every episode with rapt attention. It actually really shaped my personality & I began writing short ghost mysteries by age 10. I still have them. They were awful of course, but I was committed & I finished them. Now I have a 25 y/o daughter (who was young when Zombie Island was released & as she was raised on SD, us having every episode ever of SD on either vhs or dvd) & she is a writer of young adult mysteries, only she is GOOD & even Scholastic offered her a contract when she was a teenager! But yeah! I am gonna be that sub who always comments, leaves a big ol' like (like, groovy, right?!) & is always waiting for your next video! Btw, I also love Garfield, Snoopy/Peanuts/ Charlie Brown, Bugs Bunny & also many wierd, eclectic & obscure tv shows & movies. (ie the 1960s comedy horror- probably the 1st ever- "The Fearless Vampire Killers". It's free on YT if you wanna watch it. Roman Polanski & Sharon Tate are in it.) Lol I just watched "the ghost is here" montage back and never noticed before, but the whole thing foreshadows that Scooby and Shaggy save the gang at the end of the movie and makes Lena's statement of "a waste of time and magic wax" not only ironic in the end, but obviously wrong even before all this happens. Although unintentional, the boys freaking out and running away is what catches/reveals every one of those fakes and leads to the unmasking. Very smart of the writers.
@Fragmentsinfractals488
@Fragmentsinfractals488 2 жыл бұрын
It also reveals that Lena's is so un-genre savvy that she doesn't realize leaving anyone agency is a good way to lose, especially on a time crunch. However, the cat demons are prejudiced against dogs and people who like them. So people who like dogs or dogs themselves Must be evil and stupid. So really Lena was complacent and through that complacency, became dumb. And Ha ha, it did waste all her time.

I absolutely loved this video Scott! Well done on another great one! Zombie Islands still one of my favourites! I’ve always found it interesting how the monsters were allowed to be scary when they were fake, but when they were real they had to be comedic and light in tone. So I loved how in these Direct to Video films, they were finally able to do both. I feel like it’s so much easier to accept the monsters in the show when they keep it in the spooky tone the franchise is used to, as opposed to when they straight up just change the tone to justify the monsters being real. It just feels off for Scooby-Doo, I mean don’t get me wrong I like a lot of things from the Scrappy era with real monsters, but it definitely just feels different. I agree with ya on this being my favourite interpretation of Daphne , and loved the Babish reference!

Been watching it since i was 3 or 4 & im almost 24 now & can still watch it with the same feeling of enjoyment as i had as a kid seeing it for the first time. The way they did the story & characters was & is still just so entertaining to me. For me the scene where Scooby and Shaggy come across the bones of Moonscar in that grave and the a green light comes down and he is brought back to life I flinch. Nothing to me is more scarier than that. I can watch all sort of scary movies and have no problems, but that scene still freaks me out. I remember watching it as a kid for the first time and sitting through it but it traumatized me and so since then I can't look at that scene. I always look away.

Actually, some of the old villains were scary in implication - what will a cornered scam artist do when their scheme is unraveling and all that profit is flying out the window? Also, until you find the 'victims' alive and well, who knows what really happened to them, whether they were really captives or part of the scam? Also, part of their schemes often involved traps that no one could guarantee were harmless.

One thing I’ve wondered about this gem of a movie, why cat people? Was it simply a foil to our beloved canine hero? How did they manage a whole antagonist around cat worshipers that incorporates both the moon and the draining of life force to attain immortality to these French(?) settlers.
@Sandstormer9
@Sandstormer9 3 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure if you have heard of this Hanna-Barbara series called Swat Kats, a show about cat people. But they played a huge role with the plot of Zombie Island. The writers wanted to make an episode centred a life force draining succubus that unfortunately never got to be made due to censors. The writers of the episode were however able to re-use the story for Johnny Quest and Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island. In a way Zombie Island's plot was a jab from the writers against the Swat Kats' censors. I'm sure you can find more on google. Hopefully I answered your question.

Not to mention that it has some of the best cel animation to come out of the 90s. One of my biggest gripes with the original series is the rinse and repeat of animations. Don't get me wrong, they were on a tight budget and schedule in the beginning, but it's simply refreshing to see the animation used to its extent.

I think I saw somewhere that pointed out the brilliance of the chase song "Terror Time Again". Especially the title and lyrics for the song. For once, the gang is feeling true and utter terror they (with the exception of Shaggy and Scooby) haven't felt since the good old days of rubber masks, and illusions, before it got boring to them. Here? It's "terror time again" by being , once again, confronted by monsters but this time, it's confirmed they're real. They are feeling genuine terror and fearing for their safety.

7:44- the BIG difference is that while the monsters in the older cartoons were real- they were more likely quirky goofballs or Saturday morning villains at worst; this is the first time they genuinely faced what they used to face- truly, eerie and terrifying stuff of nightmares that would shatter one’s sense of reality if they were real- which proved never to be the case as they were greedy people hiding in guises…. Until this movie. Those aforementioned real monsters were either epic quests of outlandish adventures; never in their primary line of business, which is generally taken more seriously. So when it becomes apparent that it’s real, that safe logic isn’t just broken- it’s shattered complexly as the gang is now faced with the genre they dabble in but never truly embrace- Horror. Horror is meant to disturb, frighten, and scare. Scooby Doo does venture into it briefly, but literally pulls the mask off of the monster to show the villain underneath to give some safety. With the zombies- which are not the usual quirky/spooky kinds- rather the more traditional moaning rotting perversions of life, it’s completely subverts the format- but that’s not what the true horror resides. It turns out that the “clients” not only caused the zombies to emerge, but they themselves were an inversion of the formula- being demonic cat beasts that feed off of others with the situation essentially being a sick predatory trap/kidnapping scheme to remain alive forever- with the “monsters” keeping out the gang from the same fate. It’s something far more terrifying than just zombies on their own- it’s psychological and surrealistic in its corroding in the very core of the series. That’s why it truly is memorable.

Fun fact: I'm not certain about this, but the zombie listed as a Confederate Colonel in most sources appears to be wearing at least a brigadier general's uniform, which either means every source for the zombie's rank is wrong, or there was a lack of due diligence in the animation process. Same is true for Colonel Beauregard.

I grew up watching Scooby after school everyday in the early-mid 80s, and I brought my kids up watching the first classic series seasons and the New Scooby Doo Movies (with the old tv/film guest stars), so when I worked at Blockbuster, I'd let my kids come pick a movie each off the shelf once a week. I think they were moderately scarred by this title--I didn't know the formula had changed either! But it's like going in the store to buy Boar's Head deli meat and arriving home to bite into an early 90s version of Tofurkey. There's a youtube upload of all the original Scooby-Doo Music recording sessions linked together (it's about 30:00 long I think?), but we routinely play it on road trips and sing along to all the various parts in harmony and insert direct quotes from episodes where we knew the specific cue was used. Scooby Doo is a brilliant family experience even without the visuals, just by virtue of having such a colourful and eclectic musical score. :)

I actually like how all the zombies look like pirates, confederate soldiers, mafia goons, and tourists, because it looks like the Werecats were killing what we’d deem generally bad people.
