Daphne would not be the same without this era in the franchise history. One interesting thing that's stayed a constant for her in many subsequent series is the reporter angle. The franchises most iconic movie, zombie island, keeps the reporter angle which itself serves as a catalyst for the film's events. Idk, but this era is arguably one of my faves

Allegedly Scrappy doo was killed off when the live action movie was being produced cause the director just HATED scrappy with such a passion he made it his mission to kill off scrappy entirely as a character. Once the movie was released he apparently succeeded and that's why we no longer get to see scrappy doo in scooby doo things. I've also hated the entire debunking "its not real" thing about scooby doo in recent years cause it feels like theyre just denying alot of what made the show and franchise great in the first place. Zombie Island alone is one of the most iconic movies and it dealt with real ghosts and even voodoo cat people. Mystery Inc is said to be one of the best scooby shows for also embracing a darker story that went to include other HB lore as well. On top of all that they just make velma a huge jerk about everything like shes miss official science who doesnt believe in anything that isn't proven fact. she wont even humor ideas and just became a boring annoying know it all.
@YujiUedaFan4 жыл бұрын
The Movie isn't in the same continuity though.
@timothymclean3 жыл бұрын
Zombie Island was only impactful _because_ the franchise usually avoids supernatural stuff. That's the balance I think the show should strike-stick to mundane explanations for typical mysteries, and only break out genuine magic for some special occasions. That said, the finale for a long-dead series about literal ghosts is exactly the kind of special occasion that deserves real ghosts.

@@freedomchaser9664 Alright. But I must warn you, its a bit lengthy, so bare with me. TITLE: "Scrappy" STUDIO: Warner Bros. Animation DISTRIBUTOR: Warner Bros. Pictures PLOT: Its business as usual for Mystery Inc, as we see them investigating an abandoned police station and setting up one of Fred's signature traps to lure and unmask their latest monster. Unfortunately for those meddling kids, the monster they were after had other plans and had managed to mysteriously rig the trap to capture Mystery Inc. in an attempt to frame them for the crime the monster itself committed. Soon word gets out that Scooby and the gang are all behind bars and awaiting trial. Now society knows that something shaddy is going on, but anyone who tried to testify on the gang's behalf would be charged with tampering with a law enforcement investigation. If the gang could not be proven innocent within 3 days, they would be behind bars for good. So unfortunately this is one mystery that the gang can't exactly crack, given that their behind bars, and the Mystery Machine has been impounded. At the same time all this went down, we are introduced to our title character for the next 85 minutes, Scooby Doo's hyperactive nephew, Scrappy Doo. Who's currently living at a pizzeria, where his mother, Ruby Doo, works as a waitress dog, delivering pizzas to tables and even helping deliver pizza boxes to-go. Now Scrappy means well, but given his puppy power tendencies, Scrappy longs to be just as great of a mystery solving master as his Uncle Scooby. Unfortunately spending a majority of his time in a pizzeria where little to no bad guys appear, has lead to the pups imagination often getting the better of him, and him accusing most innocent people in the resturaunt of being a possible red herring, leading him to be viewed as an utter annoyance by resturaunt staff. After getting into trouble for the final time, Scrappy gets put in the dog house til he can learn to behave. Despite Ruby trying to reason with Scrappy, and maybe offer a way to channel all that puppy power energy in a way to get it under control, Scrappy laments that not only is he bored of being cooped up in a pizzeria all day, but also how he wants to carry on the same legacy as his Uncle Scooby, and make him proud. He constantly brags about how he supposedly isn't adraid of anything, but weither he wants to admit it or not, there is one fear he does have, that he'll have to come to terms with eventually. That being, the fear of letting his Uncle Scooby down. Scrappy knows that Scooby is as cowardly as he is hungy, but despite being a big fat coward, Scooby Doo manages to pull through and have himself a scooby snack and that's a straight up fact. But the idea of letting his uncle down by being as vulnerable as any other dog is something that Scrappy refuses to let happen at all costs. However things quickly get going when Scrappy sees a news broadcast showcasing that Mystery Inc. is behind bars and how law enforcement seems to be rigging the case to convict those meddling kids. Scrappy of course suspects shaddy practices within law enforcement and the court procedure, and decides he wants to prove the gang innocent. Not because he wants to get some respect, but simply because he knows the Scooby gang are innocent and he refuses to let them be wronged by the law. However he knows that he can't do this on his own, and soon meets a woman named Marcie Fleach (who was originally a recurring character from 2010's "Scooby Doo: Mystery Incorporated"), who adopted the nickname, "Hot Dog Water". She was also a friend of Mystery Inc, and had been trying to do some undercover detective work to find the culprit who framed Mystery Inc because he/she had a long standaing personal beef with them. After a bit of back and forth, the two decide to team up and head off on a road trip across the state, with Marcie basically playing straight man to Scrappy's "Puppy Power" antics, as they set of to find and unmask the culprit and clear Scooby and the gang's good names. On the surface this is a standard Scooby Doo mystery, but with the highly controversial Scrappy Doo as the focus. However while the mystery is the general genre of the movie, its not the primary focus. Rather the primary focus of the story is Scrappy's arc of learning to accept the fact that he's no different from anyone else when it comes to personal fear. This take on Scrappy shows that he is in fact vulnerable and eventually by the end, he learns that there is ZERO shame in having a personal fear. In Scrappy's case, his "Puppy Power" ideologies are the result of pent up anxiety and how he should be more honest with himself and with others, and also acknowledges that just because he can jump into a dangerous situation head on, doesn't always mean that he should. It may be a mystery comedy, but at its core, its about Scrappy's personal growth and his friendship with Marcie and how she too is a bit of an outcast, giving Scrappy someone he can relate to. Well? What'd ya think?

In my personal headcannon, Fred & Daphne broke-up amicably after High School(their Careers went in different direction's). Her later Relationship with Shaggy happened due to both having to "Be the Parents" of two mentally scarred kids(Scrappy thinking he was a Dog & Flim-flam's criminal history). They got unwillingly pulled into Vincent VanGhoul's(i never get tired of that Name) world and just naturally hook-up. They broke-up before Zombie Island probably due to "Scrappy" finally getting help(especially after the Kookie incident in Reluctant Werewolf). Warner's instructions to SPECIFICALLY not include Scrappy and Flimflam is the exact corporate decision that works in the complete opposite favor of what they wanted to accomplish: by specifically not including characters because you don't want to draw attention to them, you will inevitably bring even more attention to them than if you'd just reluctantly included them. Especially when you take into account the fact that people will rewatch the original series to catch up with the continuity. The issue with trying to vague with if the ghosts are real or not: this was an inappropriate time to emphasize that. Play by the rules of the series you are trying to pick up from; the 13 Ghosts were 100% real at that point. Them being real actually spices things up from the norms of Scooby Doo because now they don't win just by unmasking the ghosts. But the chest gives them a win condition to get out of something they weren't otherwise prepared for. Scooby Doo on zombie Island also highlighted one of the big problems I had with Scooby Doo as a whole: 95% of the "ghosts" are people 𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘦𝘴 committing crimes to get rich. So it gets old and everyone goes from asking "Is that a real ghost?" to "What get-rich-quick scheme is it this time?". But the INSTANT we find a REAL ghost, everyone's attention is grabbed and we're trying to figure out "what do we do now?". I'd prefer if Scooby Doo went in a direction where every season, a random number of episodes are fitted into 4 categories: 1. Generic Scooby Doo formula. Oh, this ghost is fake. Here's what's really going on. 2. Oh crap! The ghost was actually REAL! And it's evil! What do we do now?! (Resolved by finding a way to neutralize or escape the ghost) 3. Oh crap! The ghost was actually REAL! But wait. It's friendly? Why is it here and if it doesn't want to be here, how do we help it pass on/rest/become not-an-issue? (sometimes criminals or people with bad intentions could be the real problem) 4. Usual Scooby Doo formula. Oh, this ghost is fake. Here's what's really going on.... but wait... what about that thing we found/saw back there and all this other stuff? Criminal: "That wasn't mine/I had nothing to do with that." Everyone: "👀 ...oh..." (Then you can let the episode fade out. You don't have to "solve" the case of the real ghost if you don't want to. Keep it vague if you want.) The numbers other than 1 were actually done a few times, but the point is that if used more often, with these formulas, the creators can keep you interested and guessing. Sometimes the monster is real, sometimes it's not. We've got a cast of interesting characters with experience solving mysteries. Let them do what they do. Some episodes with different/missing members of the gang. Some episodes with new/reoccurring/cameo members can keep things fresh. (Scooby Dumb/Dee, Red Herring, older Flimflam, a reworked Scrappy) But nah... let's just only do formula #1 over and over...

The series also marked the final Saturday morning Scooby series to feature Scrappy-Doo, and was the only Scooby series that had a pre-adolescent child (Flim Flam) become part of the gang. The show was canceled by ABC in March 1986 due to low ratings & budgetary problems and replaced with re-runs of Laff-a-Lympics. Scrappy feels like he kinda deserves a second chance. He reminds me a lot of Jason Todd, a new character D.C brought in for a new younger audience who was hated by the public and forcibly removed from the series. However they later brought back Jason Todd as the Red Hood and gave him a new character arc which fixed him in the eyes of the fans. Warner Bros can possibly do the same with Scrappy if they tried.

80's Scooby Doo was a MASSIVE product of it's time, showing off how 80's it was. From "The New Scooby Doo Mysteries" spoofing "Thriller" in the credits (I believe I heard that was the intention), and going for a more darker tone in 1985 (which mirrors that of cult TV series Doctor Who, which did the same thing in 1985). Even Daphne's fashion in 13 Ghosts is 80's, the jumpsuit look with the perm later popularised by Renae Jacob's April O' Neil in TMNT. I just love it for what it is because I'm a 90's lad and it was a time before I was born...

I was never bothered by Scrappy Doo. One of my favorite movies in the Schooby Doo franchise is the Scooby-Doo and the Reluctant Werewolf movie where Shaggy is a racer; Scrappy is a very good counter balance to the scared nature of Shaggy and Scooby, and his boldness remembers me that of a chihuahua.

Scrappy during the 1983-1988 shows and movies was a genuinely good character, but people only remember his early days in 1979-1982, where he was a bit rough around the edges and could be annoying sometimes, and the 2002 live-action movie, which ruined and derailed Scrappy to shit, it was horrible. I watched this show as a kid during the Scrappy era, and while I agree it's not as good as the earlier versions (Scooby/ Shaggy/ Scrappy was the all-time worst incarnation, IMO), I do think it's over-hated, and more likable for little kids then adults. And yes, this era was better than the earlier Scrappy era. BTW, after the 1987-88 TV movies, here's a complete list of all the other animated Scooby-Doo shows and movies you can do: The New Scooby-Doo Movies (1972-4) The Scooby-Doo Show (1976-78) Shaggy and Scooby-Doo Get a Clue! I never understood the hate for Scrappy myself. Though that could very well be because the only regular Scrappy I could experience in my childhood was a single VHS of a Hannah Barbara special where it only had 3 shorts from Scrappy's time. It was why I, at first, originally hated how they made Scrappy a self-centred, egomaniac jerk in the live action movie, because he wasn't the Scrappy Doo I knew. Thoughts on Scrappy: I don't had him as much now. I think its just a case of the show being around so long. Scrappy was the first major shake up from the original recipe. But after so many changes 50 years later, Scrappy, the add-a-kid, seem mild in retrospect. Thoughts on Curse of the 13th Ghost: Great first 1/2 hour. And you can tell when the movie changed hands. That long avalanche/chase scene. Then it was mediocre until it ground to a halt. I liked the idea of a grown up Flim Flam. It made me wish we could see a grown up Scrappy. Thoughts on The 13 Ghosts: It was good. I think Scrappy worked here because he had his own Shaggy in Flim Flam. Instead of dragging the boys into the fight, they got in on the costume gag. Essentially everyone did here. Scooby and Shaggy got tricked by Boggle and Weird. Boogle and Weird got tricked by Flim Flam and Scrappy. And Scooby and Shaggy tricked the main baddie. Thoughts on the Scooby Doo Franchise: It never strays too far from the man in a rubber mask. But I like when they face the supernatural. It feels like they are in more danger. when the threat is just some land developer you wonder if they were ever in any real danger. Ghosts and zombies give it stakes you can't get from the disguise of the week.

Or maybe even he leaned into/internalized them not liking him and went off to do his own thing, maybe travel with another group who's goal has been to catch more monsters than the original crew which ultimately leads them to causing more problems for the townsfolk which always gets the original gang called thus providing the OG gang with constant work and scrappy with learning opportunities. What's weird about the era without Fred and Velma (too me at least) is I think Shaggy and Daphne are friends by proxy, what I mean by this is they strike me as the two in the friend group that only hangout together when the others are around, they would never meet up and hangout as a duo (or trio with scooby). I don't know I just think its a little strange, well that and the fact she drives the mystery machine which has always been canonically Fred's van so maybe he loaned it to her or its like a business vehicle. Also I should probably have prefaced that I haven't seen every season and episode of the show so I'm probably wrong.

The people making new Scooby properties really like to push THEIR preferences onto everyone. They disallow Scrappy and a version of FlimFlam that is an actual kid (why is he the same age as Daphne and Shaggy? They’re like 10 years older than he is and he looks like he’s the same age as they are in the movie) and they like the monsters being fake so in movies like the 13th Ghost and Return to Zombie Island they have Velma acts smug and say everything was a hallucination or BS. It stiffles the creativity of the franchise. If they were in charge back in the Zombie Island era we’d never have gotten the real monsters movies.

Thank you for reminding me about the finale film! I didn't get to watch it yet! Also, I grew up loving 13 Ghosts, & I liked Scrappy Doo. I was unaware that everyone hated him until, well, the internet. When my big sister took me to see the live action movie in '01, I was furious at that plot twist, & the ditching Scrappy at the side of the road. (That's a puppy you just abandoned that is the NEPHEW OF YOUR OWN DOG YOU MONSTERS.)

That was horrible for me too

Literally all of this. I didn't realize people hated Scrappy-Doo until the 2010's when I got really into Scooby, and I absolutely hated the Scrappy plot in the live-action movie. Especially after that movie starts out with Shaggy saying "Friends don't quit", and Velma introducing Scrappy as being "the nut of the family", meaning she still considered him family. Even after they dumped him in the desert. Six miles from the nearest town. Even if he wasn't a puppy, he's still Scooby's nephew, a member of the Gang and a living creature. Leave him in town.

They actually aired the New Scooby Doo mysteries and the new scooby and scrappy doo show quite often on Boomerang when I was watching so I definitely remember those more than some other incarnations. like new scooby doo movies which really never aired much

Really cause the Boomerang I watched only had Scooby Doo Where Are You, New Scooby Doo Movies, A Pup Named Scooby Doo, and What's New Scooby Doo.

Watching Daphne just elbow Shag so silently and sternly during that one scene in Mysteries made me lose my shit that felt like a joke from Bojack.

Finally someone who understand this era of Scooby Doo. I've been spent like years trying to explain the importance of Shaggy, Daphne, Scooby & Scrappy Doo in this era & why Fred & Velma was need it during this time. Granted they came back as guest stars in The New Scooby Doo Mysteries. But Daphne needed character development they also were trying to make Scrappy more useful & relevant to the gang & plus they were experimenting to see how Shaggy & Daphne would interact with one another without Fred & Velma (Which is a good thing considering I'm always been shipping for Shaggy & Daphne). I feel that this era doesn't get enough credit that they deserve especially the 13 ghost of Scooby Doo which is still my favorite Scooby carnation despite Warner Bros dropping the ball with their so called conclusion movie Scooby Doo & the curse of the 13th ghost.

8:33 is also such a weirdly gentle and subdued shove.
