I understand is hard to let a company die,specially when you have people on the payroll and you want to allow them to live from what they love to do. But sometimes,in order to save the brand's name /lagacy you have to let it die. Only that way you can maybe at some point bring it back where it still feels legit. Zoo York's image was so beaten that even a great raw street skater like Brandon Wastegae was not able to make it look legit.
@bakeraus3 жыл бұрын
Sometimes you just want to cash out because once the brand evolves it turns into a real day job and loses it's free spirit. I think I would cash out myself it's more important to be able to live a comfortable life when you are older and not have to worry about money constantly, it helps you move onto a new stage in life. I get your point though it's hard to let your baby leave home when they get older.
@armin388223 жыл бұрын
@@bakeraus The only way I would be able to let somebody else have the ownership of a brand that I created is if I knew for sure they have the same passion and love for it like I do. I would never be able to get out and give it into some unknown hands. It would feel like letting go of my child to some people that I dont know. I would lose sleep if I saw the logo I created on something I completly dont bealive into. I recently lost a job since I didnt agree with the direction it was going. The world is ugly becasue people let go. It gets watered down since some people want to cash out. I would rather let a company die then to make product that I dont bealive into. And I would let people know from the start that thats the path Im going to take. Even if it means eating raw bread for a while. Thats where we started and thats what we are. If we get big, we will get big on our own terms and if people dont like us at the top, we will lose zero sleep over falling back down. Thats the only way to keep a brand legit for longer period of time. Stay true and dont get cute. Zoo York is a prime example of that going wrong.
@bakeraus3 жыл бұрын
@@armin38822 Super hard decision to make but the skateboard industry changes so much to what is hot at the time and your brand just dies in time. We are now seeing older crew like myself getting back into skateboarding which is reviving some of the shoe silouetters, boards and some brands. It would have been a good amount of money on the table and at the time ECKO was a big brand, not a easy decision but when someone puts up millions of dollars in your face..... Nothing stopping you making something new with all your old connections and networks.
@armin388223 жыл бұрын
@@bakeraus Imagine Baker taking the Zoo York path. Anything Andrew starts again Im not gonna totaly trust it. But if Baker has to get really really small since is not popular, I would still get their boards. And when or if they get back on top they will stay legit. Shit goes in cycles. Vans was whack in the late to early 00. Now Vans is the shit.. But yes. Many take the path you are talkin about. Big company sees a small company thats really hot so they buy it and ruin it in the process by trying to force feed it to people outside of the bubble instead of letting it grow organicly as it did on its own. It got hot becasue is true. But hey, there has to be a reason for it since it happens over and over again.
@bakeraus3 жыл бұрын
@@armin38822 Even Vans got bought out and that was really core brand. The same crew who owns Dickies and Supreme. I think it's more how they treat pro's/employees which really depends on how good a company is. All companies hit a space where they make the jump or not from small to large which costs a heap of capital and a damm good network.

I thought that Zoo York was a NY street wear brand, like a Phat Farm/Baby Phat, Fubu, Kwame Brown; this feels like: Stüssy, No Fear (which once created a Energy Drink ?!?! (Rockstar, Monster, Red Bull, not Four Loko or Budweiser Extra (B to the E) ); Santa Cruz, Tony Hawk (who had a "(Tony Hawk) Pro Skater" video game franchise; late 1990's for the Sony Playstation 1 (PS1) ); Marc Ecko (and his famous rhino logo); Keith Haring, Basquiat, or the underground Banksy (social or political commentary) brand. "Kids (1995)" (by filmmaker Larry Clark) is a cult classic film. This interview is some Dope stuff, man, just like the DGK (dirty ghetto kids) brand (& the bio-pic film, "Lords of Dogtown" (2005).

Typical high-strung east coast bro. Zoo York decks of the early-to-mid ‘90s were not a derivative of any other brand. The genesis of the modern concave of today; what some brands now call “OG” concave, but in its original form-boards that were 7.35” to 7.5” to 7.675 to 7.8 to the first instance of a modern pop at 8.1” x 32” that would break before turning into a wet noodle.
