in the Web Novel, Light Novel and Wiki-fandom of GATE. they mention why the JSDF prefer the old Howa Type 64 Battle Rifle than the current Type 89 Assault Rifle despite being Obsolete it proven effective against Orc, Trolls and Ogre when they encounter them the Howa Type 64 battle rifle. chambered in 7.62x51mm NATO round that can Pierced through Monsters Thick Skin, while the Type 89 assault rifle cartridge 5.56mm NATO round. the cool thing about the Manga, I don't know if this happened in both WN & LN but in the Manga they Modified both Type 89 and Type 64 rifles by adding Fore Grip and Optic Scope on to there Rifles while the 50 cal M2 Browning heavy machine gun that can easily slaughtered the Monsters
