Thanks Ice & Ish for that. It’s so true and more kids need to hear this. College is not the golden ticket, unless you have a solid plan.

It literally is the golden ticket. Just don’t go and get a social studies degree. If you are going to get yourself in debt make sure it’s “good debt” aka a real degree. 70+ % of the U.S’s millionaires went to college.

@@Thisthat1234 Talk to Mike Rowe about that. College is as over-rated as it is overpriced. I know several tradesmen making 200k+ and they're able to dictate their schedule. College doesn't do that, skills do.

@@ngaflipper2658 what’s the difference between any trade school / certification then to university? There is a demand for trade jobs, not sociology major. Don’t go to university and waste your money on bullshit. You are also not saying anything about apprenticeships, licenses, certification, tools cost that go into those trade jobs.

My father always told me if i wanted to go to college it better be for a STEM or medical oriented career. An expanding field or somewhere you’re always needed. Hes in IT himself and told me that those liberal arts degrees leave you with nothing most of the time.

I never went to college and make a great living. Thank God! But I pushed my daughter to get all A’s so she can go to school for free because I damn sure didn’t have a college fund nor did I want to waste money on school knowing I never went. She thanks me now because most of her friends are all in debt over college…and with no guarantee of a high paying salary. And she got accepted into some of the best school in Florida. Parents, push your kids to do well so you don’t have to waste money on college. The only reason I told her to get the degree is so no one has that reason to tell her no if she decides to work for someone that requires that.

Two words: Trade School. I wish we had HBTS that would offer good trades to learn to where you know with your training you’d be pretty much guaranteed to have a good paying job. To put things into perspective: I went to JOB CORPS, JOB CORPS and took Heavy Equipment Operator as my trade and if I wasn’t a dumb ass back then, right now I could be making about 35-40$ an hour operating Heavy Equipment. I believe they pushed blacks into getting a College Education and not trades because there’s more money in trades; Blacks used to prevalent in waste management and when they started making money they stopped that real quick. with college comes student loans and debt etc etc etc.
@JenkinsOwen
@JenkinsOwen 2 жыл бұрын
This myth gets repeated often and if we’re serious about helping black people it has to stop. Of course trades are good, but there just isn’t a single shred of economic evidence to support the idea that colleges like debt and teach no skills. The vast majority of people who graduate go in to professional areas such as teaching, law, medicine, banking etc. Of course the very best trade jobs pay more than the worst professional jobs, but on average you’ll make more money by getting a liberal arts degree and your teaching qualifications than you will on a construction site, and that’s just a cold fact. Of course if college is not for you then get a trade, and private colleges will try to flog you shit you don’t need, but they mostly do that through unnecessary NCAA programs and unnecessary accommodation size, not through their professional programs. College has always been and through all of the crap of the US education system still remains a very realiable way to increase your average income across an entire lifetime.

The biggest issue is people thinking they need to go to 4 year school off the gate. If I could go back I'd do 2 years of technical then would've got my bachelors. Would saved hella money that way not even including staying on campus they require you to buy a meal plan that's like 12k by itself for room and meals. Plus the first 2 years are basic requirements that you can pay cheaper at a community college . It's about the money in the end

When you’re Asian or south Asian (Indian/ Bengali) and have parents who can barely speak English but expect you to get straight 100s and you’re a disgrace to your family if you don’t go to college. We’re also expected to graduate ASAP and start providing for the fam. Yet, since they’re not knowledgeable themselves they limit you to 3 careers: being a nurse (which is literally one of the hardest jobs considering you studied that hard to clean old peoples feces and work crazy shifts with no excuse), a doctor (good luck with 8 years of 0 sleep) or something in the IT field. Nothing wrong with the last one except that nowadays there are literal 6-8 month IT crash courses that land you the same jobs as your 4 year degree does. And why be a nurse when you can do 2 years for radiology and make way more bucks doing way less labor. There’s so many other easier money producing careers we don’t even know of much less go for because we out here fulfilling our parents dreams.

I appreciate this discussion and I agree that learning a trade is a great option however I think the statistics show that a college education does pay off. Also I feel like with Black people it’s hard to compete in the workforce in general so imagine doing so without a college degree. To Ice’s point there needs to be more conversation on maybe choosing lucrative fields to begin and then eventually, after being stable financially, then maybe pursing a field of interest, assuming it doesn’t earn a high income.

Higher Education like many industries in Late Capitalist 21st Century America has become a way to transfer wealth from the working classes(barely any true middle class anymore) to Billion Dollar Institutions(Universities/Colleges/Banks). I recommend unless you are pursuing a degree that provides a clear pathway to a high earning career(STEAM, LAW, etc.) go to a Community College first to figure out what you want to do as a career or go to a trade school. Being in 5-6 figure debt in your early 20s when low paying entry jobs as your only option is not the move.

This is my first time seeing this show and this was a great topic. I was part of the generation of you either work or go to college. I worked in STEM for 25 years but I just received my degree this year. Because of that I made sure that I took the college tours with my kids and helped them to pick a career that would be beneficial to them. I am very disheartening because my child currently attends Howard as a freshman and STEM major. I am so embarrassed of this whole situation. She had excellent options for colleges to attend but she wanted to really attend Howard. What a slap in the face to both students and parents who supported this university. Really thinking of making this her last year. That president needs to be fired and the administrative staff that supported this nonsense all these years.

My high school son (senior) and daughter (junior) are presently going through the college visits; and, my daughter was JUST asking me about Howard University, as a school. She, and her brother: ...SHELTERED. I: ...RANNNNNNN AROUND THESE STREETS of The DMV, even when I was a young, wild pup. That is...NOT an option, for my daughter OR son; although, I DID inform them both, that if you choose the correct major, and connect with the right people: ...It is a VIABLE resource, as well. Without, full knowledge of what you are stepping INTO...??? Could BE problematic, for a new kid from high school. THAT area can be tough, for a GROWN GODDAMN MAN, or woman...TRUST*lolz*.......................................................

Millions of dollars were donated to Howard in the last 2-3 years. Nothing seems to change. $40 million was donated MacKenzie Scott in 2020. Another 5 million recently donated this year. This is sad. Black people we have to do better by our students. We encourage kids to go to HBCU but not giving comparable living conditions, food etc as PWI. We have to hold the school accountable for allocating the donor money properly. Better housing etc.

It’s simple, go to college and choose a skill to learn. Either medical, technology, government, or business. That’s it. Do not go to college for arts or any other field where the world does not need many people of that skill. It’s really that simple. You choose a field that is in high demand.

The importance of education goes beyond just how much you’ll make. This world doesn’t need any more ignorant rich people. People who have influence but can’t even tell the three branches of the government. With that said, pls put a sock in Joe’s mouth, in this world you either have talent(joe is part of the .5 percent humans with talent enough to make them rich), or you need certifications. Education gives you that certification.
