SLJ played a character playing a character. Stephen was a calculating, controlling, tyrannical old man, playing a unassuming, limping, bumbling sycophant. SLJ was the star of the movie and definitely deserved recognition for that.

You can't nominate 3 people for the same award and all of them were in the same damn movie. I agree Leo and Samuel were awesome but that's just how it is. Waltz won every supporting award you could for his role.

Hot take: the released version of Django IS the Director’s Cut… at this point there’s no way someone at a movie studio is telling Quentin Tarantino what to cut out of his films. Also this was the first movie after his editor Sally Menke died and her assistant was given the job; it’s clear QT didn’t have any pushback in the editing chair because the movie was long as hell!
