I've always thought that casting him in the first "Terminator" film was one of the best casting decisions ever made. He was, of course, incredibly intimidating physically. Then, precisely because he didn't have flamboyant acting chops, he played it straight, with no emotion at all. Then, his "accent" made him sound a little more exotic, at least to American audiences. If you had cast someone who tried to show more range and emotion in that character, it wouldn't have worked nearly as well.

i think pumping iron was a breakthrough . it showed his abilities and how smart he was the way he played mind tricks on lou ferrigno and also his humor . i remember seeing a clip for it on the tonight show and i thought that will be a good movie. it's still a classic. it opened the door to conan the barbarian.

He was already famous after winning Mr. Universe because a popular documentary was made about him training to win Mr. Universe called Pumping Iron in early 70's. He got a cameo on Lucile Ball's variety show in the mid 70's. Got the movie Hercules in NY in mid 70's. He had plenty of exposure...wasn’t a nobody.

Why doesn't Arnold ever talk about the movie he did with Kirk Douglas 1979 The Villain ?, he was funny in that movie. It showed he had not only the action star quality with his awesome physical presence but he could be in a comedy which he then proved years later in Kindergarten Cop 🙂
