Now that you've learned how to play the pentatonic scale pattern #1, you're ready to learn another scale, which we'll call pattern #2. It's easy to master with the step-by-step instructions in this video tutorial.
So, we've learned pentatonic pattern 1. Let's learn pattern 2 and then we're going to put it all together eventually, right? So, pattern 2, how about we do it at the 12th fret, so it's going to go 1, 4, 1, 4, 1, 3, 1, 3, here's where it gets tricky, 2, 4, and then 1, 4. So let's go over that again. We have 1, 4, 1, 4, 1, 3, 1, 3, 2, 4, 1,4. Then, of course, backwards we want to do the same thing but just starting on the higher note, right? 4, 1, 4, 2, 3, 1, 3, 1, 4, 1, 4, 1. How about we do it at the 7th fret. 1, 4, 1, 4, 1, 3, 1, 3, 2, 4, 1, 4. How about backwards. How about at the 3rd fret. And, of course, let's try it open. Again, we have to imagine there's a fret here, but we're going to do it in a more natural position, and it looks like this: 0, 3, 0, 3, 0, 2, 0, 2, 1, 3, so no open string there right. Just 1, 3 and then 0, 3 for the last one, and then of course, backwards is the same. There you go, pentatonic pattern 2.

So after being roasted by my Uncle about not knowing the pentatonix scales when I tried just playing the song with tab and got somewhat past the intro, so I decided to look into some videos and wow. You are the first person over ever watched who doesn't show off and actually thoroughly explains the patterns. Thank you so much!

And for the people that may not WANT to learn "boring theory", my suggestion is just do it. I sure as heck wish I had "way back when"! There is a fundamental difference between "playing" and UNDERSTANDING 'what' you are playing. With that understanding, your ability to just "jam" will REALLY kick into gear! :-) ASK your teacher if they are not teaching you at least basic theory. Ask questions like "Why does 'this' chord sound good with 'that' chord, and go from there! :-)

when you have a scale you can play a melody within that scale.. just by going back on fourth on it doing hammer ons and pull offs you will create a melody.. so in a way its a bunch of tones that sound good together.. and you can you have to play relative to the singer.. so if the singer has a deep voice your guitar playing will match, usually not the other way around. cheers and good luck

I echo what others have said here ... But I'll say it anyway. Thank you for understanding the word "beginner" and for breaking down pentatonic scales slowly and clearly. The Tube is loaded with Clapton wannabes who show off their masterful skills more than they teach. I admire those who can play with great skill. I just don't need or want to see blistering solos when I'm trying to learn the basics and working hard at it. Again, thank you. = NEW SUBSCRIBER!!!

Austin Ws8 if you know your notes on your guitar then you know the key of the scale.. For example if I played the scale in the video and I started that scale on let's say the 5th fret of the e string closest to your face then thats in the key of A because the 5th fret of the European string is an American note

Jmr, each fret is one half step, so open E is an E note, the first fret on the E is an F note etc, so whichever fret you play on is the key you play in.

What is it giving you that bright sound to your guitar? I’m trying to play a clean sound like B.B King, but I seem to hear a little gain on everybody’s amp when they play these. Any tips to make my setup not sound so flat? The guitar is new, so I’m trying to stretch the strings now, and I’m constantly retuning it to keep it sounding as good as possible, but the sound still falls flat.

"What Key"? With this video, there isn't an actual "key" that he is playing in. it more of the FORM that he is showing you. Not trying to confuse things here, but he is playing what can be referred to as a "C-form (or "shape") pentatonic scale.(Lesson 60 was "G-form") These descriptions are coming from the "CAGED" method where everything is broken down into relationships between the C,A,G,E,and D. chord forms.
