If you can manage to ballerina yourself to the floor while keeping your back perfectly straight, then my bunny won't jump out of your arms but if you bend over just the smallest degree then she struggles and jumps, this is after being held for 15 minutes so it's not like she doesn't want to be held, she just doesn't like the transition. For what it's worth, the best luck I have had involves not focusing on the picking up at first, but rather working on getting the rabbit to adore people and shifting their instinctive fear reaction to an 'unknown' to one of curiosity & hunger. I've found that rabbits allowed to free roam are usually much easier to both condition and handle. I think this partly has to do with a rabbit who spends most of its life in a cage equating a small, low-lying, and enclosed space with security, which picking up is the opposite of and puts them into a strange environment. I've also noticed that extremely food-driven rabbits are the easiest to get to a point where they enjoy being held, because you can condition them to equate it with being fed, and you can feed them treats while they are being held. In the case of my current rabbit, who's first year of life was characterized by neglect and a complete lack of love, it took about 6 months to go from absolute & total fear of being handled to approaching people to be held, accepting food, falling asleep, and licking your face or shoulder while being held. I do not hold her in the fashion depicted in this video. Rather, I scoop her up using both hands to support the spine, and then rest her tummy-side against my upper torso, where her head can rest over my shoulder, and she can freely move it should she wants (to avoid obstructing her vision, which for a rabbit can cause anxiety.) If her head is over my left shoulder, my right hand supports her bottom-side, and her feet hang a little below that. When resting against my body, her spine is fully supported and because her entire body is making contact against mine, she's in a position where she feels stable. If a rabbit does not feel stable, that could cause them to freak out. Initially, I did this sitting down on something like a bed, because if she were to struggle/jump away, that could cause spinal damage. However, it didn't take long for her to stop struggling as she began to equate being held with affection and food. Through this process, I also used mirrors so she could see what is happening when she is being held (and so she could see that the way she was being held was solid and that she wasn't going to fall or be dropped.)

I currently have a large (but shy) rabbit in my garden, and I pick it up by pinning it down with my hand clasped around the back of its neck (to immobilise the rabbit), then use the other hand to grab both of its hind feet together to not only support its weight, but also to prevent it from scratching me.

I let my bunny put his front legs on my hand, and his back legs on the rest of my arm. That's how I carry him, and he doesn't tremble, or seem scared. Also, if I'm letting my bunny run around the house, and he's mostly running around me, does this mean he likes me? [Or is this just some coincidence?] I let him freeroam, and he does have some favourite lounge spots away from me, but he's generally running around my feet when I'm on the computer, or relaxing near to me, etc.

Oh, not sure. Sounds like it loves you though. As for cables since it free roams, get some spiral cable wrap. Mine hasn't ran circles around me yet. She does a lot of licking though, and she'll lay in a completely relaxed position while I'm petting her. She did do something I don't understand though. She was tossing the base of a flower I gave her and when I gave it a small toss myself she gave me a little nose bump to my face, squeaked, then started running around the apartment. Anyone understand what that was? Was it good or bad?

My family had a white rabbit and my little siblings were always trying to carry her and pick her up and she kinda just ran away and hid, but since i was never physically involved with her every time she was being followed my by sister and brother she’d come to me like she trusted me and all on her own she sometimes got on my lap and let me pet her which she rarely let my siblings do and watching these vids really explains why me and her bonded better than she did with the others

As a general guideline this works, but from experience I can say that it's by no means universal, and every animal really does have it's own personality. That becomes apparent as you get to know them. For instance, the little Dutch I had was completely fearless when it came to going where she wanted, and when I picked her up she was completely happy about it. I could sit her stretched out on my forearm, kind of how you'd see a cat on a branch, legs just flopped out and perfectly relaxed. I could sit her in a ball in my hand, or with my knees together flop her upside down to pet her belly. Didn't really matter which way, she'd be content, just as long as she got attention.... By contrast the bunny I've got now, who's breed I'm not entirely sure of, is definitely on the skittish side. She was raised basically the same, but still has that nervous prey quality that a lot of them have, and while she has mellowed some as she gets older she is absolutely still a bit of a nervous bunny.
@Sirona2796 жыл бұрын

I have a question, at 2:02 you say to pause with your hand to help him decide if he wants to be touched. How do you tell if he does or not? Is there a subtle indication, as in, what are the signals? I'm worried that if he retreats then he's already started developing the habit of having to move to get distance rather than you respecting the signals he's giving.
@Computernerd00210 жыл бұрын
My rabbit growls if he doesn't want to be picked up but will come closer to me if he does, he's a weird little guy. (This probably doesn't answer your question)
@alliekat235810 жыл бұрын
After a while, you will know. And so will your rabbit! Your bunny will get used to the way you ask them if they want to be petted. In this case, asking would be holding your hand beside their face, pausing, then petting (or handling). Rabbits are smart.. they will learn. After they learn, if they don't want to be petted, they will hop away or ignore you. If they want to be petted, they will stay still. Maybe they will lower their head and ears, as if to say "pet me". I teach everything my rabbit knows to her based off of her natural instincts. To ask if she wants to be petted, I hold my hand in a fist somewhere in front of her face. I know that it's her blind spot, but she's pretty chill after two weeks of having her. Then, if she wants to be petted, she will lower her head under my hand, and lay her ears flat on her head. If she doesn't, then she will ignore me or hop off. To let her know that I'm going to pick her up, I take both of my hands and stroke the sides of her face, over her eyes, then down to the middle of her body. If she's ok with being picked up, she will, again, lower her head. This is when I know to continue. I then move my strokes from the top of her body, down to her sides, then moving all the way down to her front legs. When my petting touches her front legs, she knows to be prepared to be picked up. I stop my petting, and pick her up. Believe me, this takes lots of practice. For you and for your bunny. I started off slowly, just lifting her front paws off the ground at first, then once she was comfortable with that, lifting her whole body up (not far off the ground, of course), then lifting her whole body up, and moving her from one place to another (short distance, also not far off the ground). This is where we stand now. Just practice, and you and your bunny will get used to it. Take it slow, and make your main goal to make your bunny as comfortable and calm as possible.

kinda like a cat, they will nuzzle your hand if it is outstretch. if they dont do anything after sniffing it, they are cool with ya.

Allie Kat Yes, first, I know I'm late XD But I just got a new rabbit a few months ago, and we do the same exact thing you described :3. The only problem is I can't seem to pet him right. If I pet his hand or stroke his cheeks, he stays like that for about 20 seconds before hopping away D: If I just hold my hand out or finger, he pets HIMSELF. He rubs the part he wants to be petted on my finger >.

I always pick my rabbit up with my left hand thumb supporting her left side, my hand supporting the armpit/chest-area and the fingers supporting the right side of her. The rabbits right 'arm' is in between of my lft index finger and my left middle finger (not squeezed or something, but it's in between.) And the right hand supports her bunnybum, like you're holding an apple. As long as you don't hold your right hand up too high (that won't be good for the spine, she'll bend forward then) I think it's a good way to hold the rabbit. Especially if she needs medication or her toenails clipped.

@Rapunzaroo8 жыл бұрын
Rabbits are prey animals. They don't like being picked up in general. That's not a terrified bunny. Usually they will try to escape including scratching and biting.
@theiiiuminati31838 жыл бұрын
Some rabbits are very close to humans and allow them to be picked up without bother if they trust them. In this video you can clearly see the rabbit frozen in fear, and as I clicked on this notification, I saw a human hand over the rabbits face. I think that may frighten it. Some rabbits freeze in fear while scared, and not all rabbits bite and scratch.
@lizzyyy28158 жыл бұрын
+The IIIuminati rabbits actually are ok with a hand on their face sometimes it can actually calm them down if they are frightened so as long as she was doing it gently it's fine for the rabbit it was actually calm that why it's legs were dangling it probably gets handled quite often and it probably trusts humans

How do u pick up an aggressive rabbit from the ground
@hoofbeatsheartbeats32039 жыл бұрын
my rabbit is quite aggressive all I do is pretend she is a harmless bird and go right for it , its simple DON'T PICK HER UP by the scruff just hold the scruff no picking her up then pick her up anyway you like, just bot by the scruff, the scruff is the extra skin
@7iluvanimals9 жыл бұрын
Probably would be a good idea to spay or neuter your rabbit.
@sarahburch53069 жыл бұрын
there are ways to work with your rabbit you make it less agressive but normally you should avoid picking up an agressive rabbit. it. could be that they are really scared and just doesn't like being handled
@meltymelon77689 жыл бұрын
XD I asked the same
@jatkathemeikapoika81458 жыл бұрын
you dont. you have to get the rabbit (or any other aggressive pet) to not be aggressive and then you can pick them up.

Me and my partner have just had two adorable little baby rabbits and they're getting to the stage where we're trying to introduce ourselves more, we've had them out for a run around and when it came time to put them back I find I'm terrified of picking them up. I don't ever want to hurt them or feel like I have, so this was a really good video for me to learn how to pick them up.

When i first got my baby bunnies, we let them out on the first day, i know people dont recommend doing that on the first day but i felt bad cause they've been in the cage for too long but i dont carry them, i let them play and get used to the space of our house but as time passed, i see them standing or jumping on me, asking to be carried and petted I have two bunnies delilah (female) and hamtaro (male) They're the most lovable little furs who love to cuddle

@lionclan45757 жыл бұрын
Teri 2011 their name, srsly? america is the largest culture cheese pot, pretty much every culture has a footstep here. and keep in mind the quality of american cops are drastically different depending on where you are. some are the best trained cops ever and really respecful people. they go out of their way to help people, and they have places in their local community and deal with criminals in a professional manner, while others are corrupt and don't care about other's lives and would rather shoot first even if they arent in any danger. I hear horror stories of how bad cops will unlawfully arrest people, frame them for drug use, and even go so far as shoot an unarmed citizen who is in no way a threat. yeah not all cops are bad, but not nearly enough american cops are good enough for me to say "cops are good guys in america." Its up to someones local police force, and if you are stuck living somewhere where the police force isn't well mantained... well, I hope they can move to someplace better as soon as possible.

@paintedcat592410 жыл бұрын
socialdef3 maybe they did brush it... I have a rabbit as well and she sheds crazily and I brush her 2 to 3 times a week because she sheds the rest. Rabbits are shedding animals. What about wild rabbits. No one brushes them. They rub against twigs, trees, dirt, and rocks. If you have a wire sided cage then your rabbit can rub against it. My rabbit (sadly) is a Flemish Giant/New Zeeland mix so its very hard to get her in and out of her cage(s). Buying a huge cage cost to much so I took her original cage and my aunts two spare ones and made a big one where she can stand and hop. So I know that wire sided cages work for brushing. I will do a video on my channel soon.

@amphibianallyriann57410 жыл бұрын
Nichole Bluesmith try putting him/her in a open room and let him/her chill. Put treats near you and see if he/she will come, if he/she will bring them closer and closer till they are in your hand and practice this till he/she trusts you, if not try until it will. When it begins to trust you you may solely reach out with a treat and try to pet him/her. If he/she rejects keep trying until they accept. You can move on from there.
