Howie reminds me so much of my dad. Tons of experience and information, and tips of the trade . Priceless wisdom you just can't learn from a book . It's moments like this with my dad that i miss the most . I had no idea just how often I went to him for advice and to bounce ideas off him and hang out, until he was gone back home on the other side. So yeah, I really love what y'all are doing on this channel .

Again thanks from a want to be machinist, I would have never know to check top and side at same time with indicators, I thought if it was true on the side it would be good on the top, you are learning me. Now I know why i have ruined three long rods I have been trying to turn, they were running good till right at the end, and they all did the same at the end, just went out of whack. You are great machinist, $ and mistakes over the years make perfection, thanks for taking the time to share some of your experience with us!

The last 90 seconds was worth the price of admission. I’m filing that particular technique-tidbit away for future reference.

Indicator sag can be an issue with some mag bases on the last check you showed on chuck to tailstock. Also a swing check is another way to align tailstock. Essentially just making shaft perpendicular to chuck face. Be mindful of indicator sag with this technique as well. Checking the 2 planes up and down shaft is good as long as ways of machine are level and square to chuck for the entire length. Does that sound correct/ make sense? Thanks for your videos!

It's quite straight forward setting a steady. Initially you drop your bar in the steady and true up chuck end. Then release steady completly. If the bar is self supporting grab a pair of clocks and set one up in horizontal plane and other in vertical place. Slowly rotate workpiece and set clocks so mid point of runout is at zero. Do same for both axis. So say runout is 0.030" clock will go 0.015 plus and minus zero. Then gently bring steady into play and adjust legs until bar stops wobbling and clocks read zero. Now bar must be running on centre in prep for centering..For long pieces same thing applies but support with flat plate and pressure centre. Figure out mid points of runout, bring in steady legs and your piece will be ready for centering, boring or what ever. Even if it's rough material.and needs surface machining to run steady on same methods apply.

If I was cutting a piece of hot rolled, or having a problem with the any other piece trying to walk out of the chuck. I would get some small pieces of soft metal, usually copper. I put the copper between the chuck jaw, and the work piece. That always helped. Sometimes it seemed the jaws had been abused, and they seemed like were sprung, sometimes it can be the tail stock, but those are adjustable.

Can you show us how to dial indicate the part in when on a steady rest? I think you put it on the Chuck like you did at the end this one and spin it around

Using that limber mag base in the chuck to dial in the quill of a tailstock pose problems. Unless you know the amount of droop from gravity in the indicator apparatus you can't reliably determine the eccentricity error of the quill axis with respect to the spindle"s. If I was given the job of turning that long skinny diameter, I'd track down the follow rest

On straight bar .. mag the part near the chuck ,place indicator on chuck,, rotate chuck,,, adjust steady rest to zero. I’m surprised you didn’t share.

Attaching an indicator to the chuck and rotating the chuck to check a stationary tailstock etc is not good technique, because the weight of the indicator and bracket droops it towards the part when at 12oclock, and away from the part at 6oclock. Stefan Gottswinter has covered this....
