One of my jobs at the co-op is blending fertilizer and filling carts. You always have to give things a check. Fertilizer is hard on them. We have some old ones the the drive wheel can drag if not careful. Most customers put triple 18 on hay. I do have one the puts boron in and ammonium sulfate.

If you sped up your rpms could you spread the fertilizer farther than 50ft? Thanks so much for the video, I can’t wait to see the next one.
@lukestrawwalker
@lukestrawwalker 6 жыл бұрын
Maybe a little but it will only fly *so* far, plus the wider the width, then you mess up your rates-- you have to increase the gate opening to compensate, plus the spread pattern becomes inconsistent... it really depends on the spreader where the 'sweet spot' is between spread width and consistent rate/speed/spread pattern width... Later! OL J R :)

Wonder how it compares to Trimble EZ-Guide 250... what I've run for the BIL and I really like it... modes and the "paint" part of the field look the same, guess they all are to an extent. I'd love to get a GPS system to use on our farms... we could spray our own pastures instead of hiring it done, and it'd be handy to guide us when we're spot-spraying brush and cactus in the UTV in the pasture, so we could run a specific "grid pattern" at even intervals rather than "by eye"... and of course, spreading fertilizer or seed as well... Later! OL J R :)

I'm guessing this was something you needed to do because you didn't have the option of spreading manure on the hay ground. An obvious advantage of broadcasting fertilizer over manure is the option to tailor the mixture to the needs of the ground, whereas with manure that's not possible. GPS just takes it one more step toward optimizing efficiency. Thanks for the video, Ryan!
@jeffgixer5185
@jeffgixer5185 6 жыл бұрын
Matthew Hoag spreading manure on hay ground isn't always the best use of nutrients because hay doesn't need the nitrogen. That's why they are just spreading the Potash (potassium) with micro nutrients which is what the hay needs.
@MatthewHoag77
@MatthewHoag77 6 жыл бұрын
I get that, Jeff. Thanks.
@jeffgixer5185
@jeffgixer5185 6 жыл бұрын
Matthew Hoag that and you don't want to spread pen pack on hay ground, it's just usually done with liquid slurry.
@MatthewHoag77
@MatthewHoag77 6 жыл бұрын
Of course, because you don't want to kill the plants. I remember when they were spreading last summer and going fast to make sure it was spread lightly. There's only so much control one can have on the manure spread pattern.
@jeffgixer5185
@jeffgixer5185 6 жыл бұрын
Matthew Hoag correct and they were spreading that in a pasture that I am not even sure they cut for hay. You don't want to be baling up old clumps of manure.

Interesting about the fertilizer getting spun out on the road... Not that it would really do any harm (well no more than road salt does after a rain when the fertilizer would dissolve and get sprayed up under people's cars by the tires, until it all dissolved and ran off in the roadside grass which would then use it and get lush and green... good for road hay, if anyone cuts roadside hay in yalls part of the world). Anyway, it's funny because the dry spreaders our local ag supplies "rent" with the fertilizer have "lockout levers" on them for transport... basically a long lever lifts the friction drive tire up and out of the way, and shoves a spring-loaded "pawl" up against the driven sprocket, to "lock" it from turning... When you get to the farm and hitch up to the tractor, you flip the lever back, which then pulls the lock pawl back with it from the driven sprocket, and lowers the wheel down onto the hydraulic cylinder lift arm (for hydraulically controlled spreaders) or directly down onto the transport tire of the spreader (for "full time drive" spreaders typically used in pastures, which spread whenever the thing is being pulled forward-- you have to manually pull the lever out between pastures to stop it from spreading... these also typically have the fans (spreader disks) turned by belts or gearboxes running off the ground drive as well, instead of the PTO driven fans on most "field spreaders" (typically used to spread dry fertilizer on farm fields for crops). I know the GPS is a nice touch, just for the lightbar guidance... makes a HUGE difference in the accuracy of your application, without overlapping or skipping too much like is prone with the old "mark one eyeball" method, particularly on a 50 foot swath width... Later! OL J R :)

Why does it matter? The equipment they work with is what they have available. I never understand "what if" questions as they have absolutely no point, aren't related to reality, and are totally hypothetical - what's the point? What if they won the lottery? What if there was a tornado? What if it never rains again? What if it snows in July? What if you ask relevent questions?

I think it’s to help people to understand our line of thinking. It doesn’t really hurt to ask, and is a good question though I don’t think things would be much different. We’d just have a bunch more different tractors on the farm.

I don't know, but all I see is Amazone spreaders are fully hydraulic and have automatic weighing systems, which can be easily calibrating by knowing the average density and pellet size of the fertilizer, and later the spreading discs are set to whatever speed and can even vary with GPS section control (and variable rates) so you can stay on your tramlines and fertilize accordingly. Really have no idea, but your spreader sounds like trash.
