Summer Schedule
Our schedule may vary, but expect a new video every Wednesday. Friday, and Sunday at 11AM Central!
How Farms Work by Ryan Kuster is a KZbin channel based in rural Potosi, Wisconsin.
Our mission is to teach those who didn't grow up on a farm what the farming life is like.
These videos show the Kuster family working together raising cattle and crops. We believe everyone who wants to know more about farming should be able to share the farming experience with us and we look to educate the world on many essential agriculture topics.
How Farms Work takes place on ~1,100 acres with around 75-200 cattle at any given time. Four John Deere tractors are currently used on the farm, which are a 4020, 4640, 7600, and 8235R.

Great video. Really shows how hard it is to pick the many many acres of storm damaged corn 🌽. You can talk about it all you want but seeing it brings it home. Farmers are needing help. Hope it can come. There is an old old saying about growing any crop. It goes,” you never know what a crop will yield until it is in the bin”!! You can add,if the bin is still standing after the storm!!Thanks

Combining down corn especially stalks that have been flattened like that is a real chore. Watching so you don’t dig the snouts into the ground and crush them. I had a field like that when I left it until spring to harvest. Got a strong wind and the ground had thawed and it was very wet with some wet snow stuck to the stalks. Pushed the plants right over flat roots and all at least 80% of the field. It was a slow process combing and took lots of concentration.

BIL had a few spots almost that bad a few years ago after a fierce summer storm right after the corn pollinated... we ended up actually picking cross-wise to the rows, basically running opposite the direction the stalks were laying... or at a slight angle to that... basically it acts like lodged beans where if you can get under them and start them going up into the header, the ones laying over on top of them are raised up and pulled in a LOT better. Seems crazy but can't argue with results... no matter what you do you're gonna lose some when it's on the ground like that, but going crosswise the stalks just slid one way or the other past the points and into the gathering chains and from there they either go through the snapping rolls or break off and go into the auger anyway... Later! OL J R :)

I sympathise with you though not arable we have had similar things happen with the sheep price due to reasons out of our control before as well the number we have had to sell due to being extra picky with any ewes showing the slightest sign of being green mouthed. Rather frustratingly while from the sound of it prices are poor in the US especially in the Midwest our feed bill for the winter has shot up as we are told £/ton the prices of soya, wheat, maize and rapemeal have all shot up. Some that have been fed about a lb a day are rather mad as they have been cut off.
