@robertreznik93308 жыл бұрын
On the US Great plains where fields are a section sometimes a 1/4 no one uses a little wagon. A tandem axle bobtail truck would be a surprise.
@lukestrawwalker7 жыл бұрын
It's just certain areas where the gravity wagons still persist... Most of the country is using semi's to haul their grain in... even old straight trucks (bobtail trucks) with a box and hoist are rather rare in a lot of areas anymore... My BIL has a bunch of gravity wagons, but he uses them mainly for hauling corn in from the field when he's putting corn in the bins... not to haul elsewhere... Basically if it's over a half-mile to a mile haul (round trip) we're using the semi. My nephew decided to pull a pair of gravity boxes behind his 1070 Case tractor and make a run to town during harvest this year, just for shits and giggles more than anything else... hauled about 700-800 bushels while I passed him going to town and coming back from town in the semi hauling 1000 bushels at 55 mph... His nephew also uses the gravity boxes to haul corn in from their own field to their own dryer, and put it in the bin. It basically adds most of the capacity of a second semi (pulling two 400 bushels gravity boxes behind a tractor) to their operation when bringing corn in out of the field to the dryer/bins... and when you're only moving a mile or two up the road between farms to the dryer/bins, it works pretty good. Corn going to town goes straight into the semi, though... Later! OL J R :)

Usually the worse pulling trailer goes in the front and the better pulling trailer goes on the back, just because of fishtailing. Also if you have a small and a big trailer, smaller goes front, the bigger goes on the back because smaller trailers tend to fishtail more. You hook the better trailer in the front and the worse in the back. Better trailer by itself is calm but the pin slop multiplies the fishtailing on the second trailer. If the better trailer is in the back it smooths the ride out a lot. I don't know how your US wagons pull because of the way they steer, over here we pull two axle trailers where the axle swings with the drawbar, not just the wheels, maybe there is the difference.
@HowFarmsWork8 жыл бұрын
+debelibobo With our hills, heavier loads always always always on the front.
@debelibobo8 жыл бұрын
We also have hills over here and then some! Not trying to be a smartass/dumbass just saying what works for us over here with the type trailers we have. I'm not familiar with this style of steering on trailers. Seen it only once so far in real life on a small piece of construction equipment... Keep the videos coming, best wishes from Croatia!
@lukestrawwalker7 жыл бұрын
Our gravity boxes here in the States pretty much all have "automotive type steering"-- ie the wheels pivot on the ends of the fixed axle via tie rods pulling or pushing them, based on the tongue movement. Unfortunately these types of steering gear are subject to "fishtailing" due to slop in the pivots, pins, tie rods, misalignment, etc. A good tight, straight steering gear will usually not fishtail even at high speeds. Get a little slop in them or if they get "loose" by being well lubricated and easy-to-move, and they'll fishtail pretty badly. Generally the longer the wagon (which I've learned is the "correct term" for a trailer with a steering axle at the front end and a straight axle at the rear end, versus a "trailer" which has one, two, or more straight axles fixed to the frame closer to the middle or back of the trailer) the less fishtailing they do, unless they "dog-track" (rear axle doesn't follow straight behind the front axle, so it is a little 'sideways' when pulling straight ahead). What you're talking about with the pivoting front axle is called a "fifth-wheel" type trailer here. VERY few ag trailers here in the States are set up as fifth-wheel types, because they are taller and heavier. The most notable exception is anhydrous ammonia wagons, which are almost all fifth-wheel type, mostly because of the weight I suppose. Several manufacturers used to offer very heavy duty extra-large cotton wagons with fifth-wheel type steering, often with dual front and rear axles to handle the weight. Of course this was just before the entire cotton industry basically switched over to using modules to move cotton (large "loaves" of cotton stacked by a movable press on the end of the field, which left the compressed 'stack' of cotton behind to be picked up by a straight truck with a special apron-chain equipped bed designed to pick them up off the ground and move them to the gin.) I've built a couple fifth-wheel type steering trailers myself-- what's good about them is they don't fishtail regardless of what speed you drive-- I've pulled them 70 mph down the road-- straight as an arrow. The other disadvantage with a fifth-wheel trailer is, if you turn too fast or are turning in soft ground and one side sinks in, they CAN roll over, where automotive-steering type trailers, by keeping the front wheels always in line with the trailer sides, will take the load and help stabilize the trailer on rough or spongy ground, and are far less prone to rollover in such situations. That's why. Later! OL J R :)

NH is Ford!!!
@lukestrawwalker7 жыл бұрын
More correct to say Ford is New Holland... NH bought out Ford Tractor Division back in the late 90's... I've got a mid-90's Ford 5610S with the "FORD" stickers on it, and another one we bought two years later that is a "New Holland" 5610S with ONLY NH stickers on it. Exact same tractor though. It was a messy buyout. Sperry-New Holland USED to be a division/subsidiary of Ford Tractor Division, making hay equipment for Ford. Ford acquired them back in the mid-60's IIRC... before that a lot of different manufacturers made "Ford" hay equipment, balers, and other implements. The Sperry-New Holland line was fairly limited until the mid-70's, specializing in hay equipment and other small equipment. We have a Ford 640 combine from the early 70's that is actually built by Claas in Germany (Claas "Senator" model combine). A few years later Ford dissolved its deal with Claas and sold "Long" combines in Ford Blue with a Ford model number on it, and then within a year or two of that they started selling the New Holland combines (as New Holland had gotten into the combine business by then). Since that time New Holland gained ground and Ford Tractor Division had waned after their high point in the 80's... Ford teamed with other companies to provide big 4WD articulated tractors but by the 90's Ford was looking to exit the tractor business and focus strictly on automotive stuff. SO, they sold out Ford Tractor Division to New Holland. It was a messy deal though, because New Holland was no longer allowed to use the "Ford" name and they did not acquire the Ford Tractor Division parts network, so for awhile NH used Caterpillar to distribute their parts. They also jacked up the prices of their parts-- we had farmed with Ford equipment for decades because back then, Ford was the most affordable tractor and had the lowest prices on parts compared to John Deere, International/Case IH, Massey, White, Oliver (AGCO), etc. That is no longer true-- NH parts are now more expensive than Deere, which USED to have the most expensive parts! They finally got their own parts network up and running within a couple years of the buyout, but they kept the high parts prices they were charging (and pocketed the money they had been paying Cat to handle the NH parts in the interim). Now NH has bought out Case/IH (it's now "Case/NH") and basically all the Case hay equipment now is just rebranded NH stuff, like the windrowers, mowers, balers, etc. NH is also merged/bought out by Fiat, so now a lot of their tractors are basically Fiat tractors, made in Europe. I know our local dealer has had so many problems with the newer NH "Fiat" tractors that he's started selling Mahindra's-- less problems and they're cheaper, which is a big consideration in his area... for what they want for a mid-size NH "Fiat" you can buy a much better quality Deere... and he was losing sales to Deere. Anyway, the only truly "FORD" tractors anymore are going on 20 years old now... NH is NOT "Ford" anymore-- not by a longshot! Later! OL J R :)

We don't have any grain carts but we do have 6 gravity wagons (Some bigger ones and some smaller ones). But when we harvest at our other rented farms we use our 6 wagons then borrow 2 from my uncle. Which adds up to around 2000 bushels. We harvest all day (From around 10 in the morning till around 5 at night.) Then when we are milking, the semi drivers unload the gravity wagons for us into the semi. The next day we have 8 wagons empty and ready to go.

-They are very cheap and easy to repair -All grain in the trailer will funnel out into a grain auger... no shovel required -They are much easier to pull around with a small tractor. If you have a bigger tractor, you can chain up to 6 of them (That's the most I've seen) together -If you are dumping in a short/small building, you will have room to empty (they don't tip, gravity does all of the work) -They are very light. 1-2 men can simply push one around, so they are very convenient to maneuver around in a shed or confined space. That's all of the pros I can think of. In my opinion, the biggest disadvantage of them is that almost all of them don't have trailer brakes, so if you decide to pull around 4-5 of them with a tractor like a John Deere 7410 (6810 in everywhere else I believe) It can be hard to stop them all.

+Fred Deere We operate on a first come first serve basis. Until we sign a contract, all equipment is fair game since longer demos are more helpful to us than short term ones.

Yes I totally agree and support that process,i wasnt questioning that your family would negotiate the best deal after considering all factors,... you're very lucky in Australia it would be EXTREMELY rare a dealer would ever give a long demo if any at all....most equipment is only ordered from the factories on a firm customer order,...I was just surprised at your dealers being so cooperative when it comes to demo's......thats completely foreign to me, pleased you put me straight :) ..Thanks Ryan and Merry Christmas from down -under cheers Fred. :)

Stop working on Sunday it's a sin

What a load of hogwash... Agree they should go to church on Sunday, but that's their decision. When we were farming, when we were in a bind, we'd sometimes miss morning services on Sunday to get work done. We tried to go at least once on Sunday-- either morning or evening, depending on what we were doing. It was rare that we missed church altogether. Course we USUALLY tried to take Sunday off just on principle, BUT when the work HAS to be done and bad weather is coming or time is getting short, it's GOT to be done and you do what you have to do. Later! OL J R :)
