Wow, Howie just reminded me how it was done in the old days, and it worked. I remembered the Raiders being criticized for always having old veterans playing for the team, but Al knew the old guys would help mentor and coach the rookies and it worked now they don't want old veterans it's all about the keeping the team young its nonsense.

Name hires with little to no experience or being hired too late is whats got them in this place to begin with! They need to remove the interim label from Champ Kelly and make him the unquestioned GM & allow him to bring in qualified, deserving candidates with the primary job qualification being leadership.

Well said. I always looked forward to what Howie had to say about the Raiders. I can only imagine how not only his words, but the words of those who mentored him, resonated amongst rookies. I believe, in Antonio Pierce, these players identify with the HC. That kind of connection didn't only revive them, but an entire Raider Nation that needed a booster shot. Hopefully, Mark rides this wave, good, bad or ugly, and gets back to the roots of who we were. The fruits of the labor will only be sweeter. RN4L

After seeing the Raiders get stomped on by the Kansas City Chiefs week 12 of this season, I’m seeing a hole that the Raiders dug themselves into and will not be getting out anytime soon…..Besaccia, Carr and that group of raiders was the perfect storm in having continued winning seasons, winning division titles and winning a Super Bowl

I grew up with all the Raiders. Routinely they were all over Alameda. You don't understand the Raiders unless you "lived it" and when a total culture change happens, it is very upsetting. Kenny Stabler lived with Matuzak in order to keep him under control when he came from Kansas City. George Buehler lived next door to my uncle. Ron Wolfe lived across the street from me in Alameda and like Howie said, no one lived in fancy mansions just did what they did to build a football team in an "old school way." The Raiders were our "heroes" win or lose and the Oakland Coliseum was always sold out. Once you live it, one can see when it is not the "Raider Way." We featured "reclamation projects" but had people who played their hearts out seeking a win. We all waited a long time before we finally got over the hump to finally win our way to Pasadena and beat the Vikings. And, I got to go! What a dream for a young kid from Alameda.

As he points out in a few interviews- all the success of the Raiders as a whole has been from great ability of the office personnel being able to find the talent that slipped through the fingers of other teams who were not using them right. Until we get that right we are toast. And Mark Davis is horrible at picking the office personnel. Hopefully we lucked into AP… The bust rate of drafting players is simply amazing. The transition from college to pro isn’t judge-able by almost anyone. Picking up guys who stabilized but were misused is the key for most ball handlers and defensive backs. Running backs are one of the exceptions because their careers are so short.

Winning in the NFL is freakin' hard period. Every year, the cameras get better, and they study each position to the granular level...that's how they've been able to figure out Purdy a bit now....and now Purdy is going to have to prove he's got the guts to get through this, and watch all that tape...hours and hours of it...practice like hell and see if he's the real deal or not. JimmyG....has to do the same---except he has to work even harder than that, and earn his spot back, and maybe before the season ends we'll see a three game winning streak and the Raiders might make the playoffs....you never know.

Ron Wolfe just doesn’t get enough credit from the Raider fan base. I love Al, but I don’t have my head buried in the sand to not realize how bad Al was in drafting and signing FA’s after Ron Wolfe left. Ron Wolfe was eyeing Brett Favre when he was with us in Oakland. He leaves to take the GB GM job….gets cut in front of in the 91 draft by Atlanta to draft Favre….a year later makes a trade for Favre. Rest is history.

Funny how things don't add up. Jim Plunkett wasn't a starter when the Raiders were in LA. Plunkett became the starter after the starting QB got injured. Same thing happened when the Raiders won their 3rd SB, Plunkett wasn't the starter. That's why Plunkett will never be a HOF. Raiders had a SB QB. Like it or not, Carr was a top 15 QB and sometimes a top 10 QB. Carr had his worst year in 2022 and he's the only one to blame for losing his job but... If McDaniels would've been patient, the Raiders would be playoff contenders, Carr would've been an MVP candidate and McDaniels would still have a job.

I love Howie, have his stitched jersey in my closet. Always respected and loved his motor. To say we don’t have a guy on the team that could win a Super Bowl is pretty disrespectful to Maxx Crosby given his continuous high motor effort on every play. Not to mention having the longest current snap count amongst active players and being top 2 amongst pressures in the league. Had we gotten someone to seriously match his level on the other side more those pressures would be sacks/TFLs. C’mon Howie…

The last 5-10yrs under Al were a horrorshow, weren't they? He was in love with measurables - "can't teach speed". He still wanted to play man-to-man defense, for players to beat the guy across the line from them. Modern football is more about scheming your way to success and picking on the defense's weakness. Interesting though that the game is coming back towards having players with super skillsets again.

I think Jimmy G can get it done, but hell's bells! He needs some damn protection! He's getting an average of two seconds pocket time before the blitzkreig arrives...People still blame Garrapolo for the Niners losing the 2019 Super Bowl, even though had them up 10 on the Chiefs until late. My point is, that you need a complete team, including blue chip linemen on both sides of the ball. To enable anything that a whizbang receiver or quarterback can do, there needs to be sufficient time for a play to develop. It ain't happening with the Raiders right now...It strikes me as odd that Howie Long disses Garrapolo, while singing the praises of both Plunkett and Gannon - who would both be equated with Kirk Cousins in today's league. Sorry, man. I'll take Garrapolo any day. Provided he can stay alive...

I believe you pick 1 team and roll with that team until you die. Since I gave up on my team, because of Marc Davis' stupidity, I won't watch a single game. That coach went 0-5 to start last year, Derek lost his TE and slot receiver for 10 and 12 games. Yet he threw to Davante Adams for more touchdowns and yards than ANY reciever in the game. Derek Carr was never the problem. That decision was idiotic.

Derek Carr was a problem, not the problem, he’d disappear at the worst times or a convenient pick 6. It’s too late to blame that on offensive coordinators or head coaches, how did Matt Stafford do it for so long in Detroit? Rich Bisaccia was an interim coach, seen it before, they make a run, media hails them as fore front but they don’t get hired (due to HC experience). We can’t change the past and bitching bout the future because of the past won’t help.
